A protagonist is the character which in a form of literature, the narrative is focused on. In the Final Fantasy series, every one of its game, movie, and animation installments has a main character from whose point of view the story is told.

Though there is no set main protagonist, Terra Branford is the representative for most spin-offs, also appearing in the logo and her theme being the main theme, and is often considered the main protagonist for the first part of the game. Celes Chere is similarly often considered the main protagonist in the second half, as the World of Ruin scenario begins with only her in the party. Both women were once subjects of the Gestahlian Empire's experiments in the field of Magitek who come to stand on their own and venture out to see the world beyond their captive holdings.
Due to this being a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, there is no universal main character. Each player experiences the game as a protagonist of their own story as one of the Five Races in the realm of Vana'diel, being an adventurer who journeys far and wide in a world governed by crystals and made by gods that now sleep.
Lightning - A tough-willed young woman who ranks as a Guardian Corps Sergeant, in the world of Cocoon. Branded with the abhorred and feared mark of the l'Cie, she embarks on a quest to save her sister from the same fate.

Class Zero - A remarkable group of Agito Cadets from the magical academy of Akademeia. Ace is the pseudo-leader, as he narrates during the game's intro for the entire group, is the first member chronologically, is the first/default member to be controlled, is favored by Arecia the most, possesses unique powers the other cadets don't have access to, sings the game's theme, and has minor ties to the plot.
Cadet - a player-customized character from the magical academy of Akademeia.
Nyx Ulric - A member of the Kingsglaive and skilled fighter with a close affinity to the magic of the royal family. During the war he was saved by King Regis when he was young, and as a result feels indebted to him.
Ramza Beoulve - A novice warrior of the prestigious warrior noble Beoulve family, who opposes how the world works.
Ashley Riot - A cold and strong Riskbreaker of the Valendia Knights of the Peace, who tasks himself the mission of further uncovering the conspiracy surrounding the heretic cult Müllenkamp and the Church of the Iocus Rood.
Luso Clemens - A mischievous and adventurous young boy who stumbles upon a grimoire that brought him to Ivalice.
