A Linkshell is a way for players to communicate with people anywhere in Vana'diel, the world of Final Fantasy XI. Players use the command "/linkshell" or press "CNTL + L" which automatically fills that in to speak with their linkshell. Only one linkshell can be active at any given point, though a player could conceivably have as many linkshells, pearls, and sacks as his inventory can accommodate.

The leader of the linkshell has a rare/unique item that can create other link pearls. This leader can also determine who in the linkshell should be given a pearl sack. Pearl sack holders can change the linkshell message and also create new link pearls to be given to other players.

Linkshells can be purchased from various Non-Player Characters throughout the world. At the time of creation, the player must pay 8000gil and set a name for the link shell. He also is given an opportunity at this time to determine the color of the link pearls. Link pearls, unless the player has a bazaar active, will display immediately before a player's name immediately above a character's head (provided the player has not turned the name displays off).

Once the owner of the linkshell drops the linkshell, all the link pearls are broken and will no longer function. If a character is deleted, however, the linkshell will remain active, but no new pearl sack holders can be designated. Since this kind of pigeon-holes a linkshell, players rarely stick around in a linkshell like this, especially considering the ease with which 8000gil can be earned.
