Causes Non-elemental damage to the target when your HP is 1.
Description
Limit Glove is a Blu Mag spell for Quina in Final Fantasy IX that deals 9999 fixed damage to a target at a cost of 10 MP when Quina's HP is at 1. It is one of the most powerful abilities in the game, and notable for being available as soon as Quina can be recruited to the party.
Limit Glove cannot be reflected but works with Return Magic. The enemies to use Limit Glove are Adamantoise, Catoblepas, and Jabberwock, but the player would need to be either very unlucky, or to have used Matra Magic on them, to see them use it (as they use Limit Glove when at 1 HP, similar to how a player would normally use it).
Obtain[]
Quina learns Limit Glove by eating a Mu, Axe Beak, Mandragora, Blazer Beetle, Jabberwock, or Catoblepas. It can be learned soon after first recruiting Quina after the party leaves Lindblum on foot, by finding Mandragoras in the forest north of Chocobo's Forest, or Axe Beaks on the Lindblum Plateau or near to Burmecia.
Mechanics[]
Limit Glove deals fixed 9,999 damage to an opponent when Quina's HP is at 1. If Quina's health is not at 1 HP, the ability will not work.
Use[]
Limit Glove is the earliest means of 9999 damage the player can deal, making it useful against various tough enemies and bosses, such as the Gizamaluke or the Grand Dragons on the ledge above Gizamaluke's Grotto on the world map. In fact, Limit Glove will defeat every boss and enemy until the Blue Narciss becomes available that Quina can fight, besides the Grand Dragon, but using it on the Grand Dragon leaves it ripe for Quina to then eat should they survive to their next turn. Only into very late into the game will enemies have so much health that Limit Glove would not decimate them.
A useful tactic in maximizing the spell's effect is to bestow Auto-Life on Quina and KO them so that they revive with 1 HP. Alternatively, Quina can use Matra Magic on themself, or the player can simply let them KO in battle and then use a Phoenix Down on them in the menu afterward.
In the endgame, the player gains more means of dealing the full 9999 damage, and if they partake in the frog catching side quest, Frog Drop will become very powerful and can match Limit Glove's damage for the same MP cost with no restriction to Quina's health, allowing them to also use Regen.
To protect Quina when they are on 1 HP, the player can bestow them with Reflect (to avoid most magic) and use Cover so Steiner, Freya, and/or Amarant will cover for them (to avoid physical attacks). Zidane's Protect Girls does not work for Quina.
