Lightning and wind materia is a Magic Materia Magic Materia in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth that provides the user both the Lightning Lightning and Wind Wind-elemental spells provided by the individual Lightning Materia Lightning Materia and Wind Materia Wind Materia. Lightning and wind materia is also imbued with both elements, and thus can be linked with the Elemental Materia Elemental Materia to add or resist against both lightning and wind damage. When used offensively, it will only target the element that an enemy is weak to; if an enemy is weak to wind but resists lightning, it will target wind.

Lightning and wind materia is rare, as only one can be acquired for a party. It also levels up much slower than individual lightning and wind materia. Though it is a much more slot-efficient materia than the individual materia, its rarity requires players to be resourceful as to who uses it, and which Support Materia Support Materia they choose to pair it with.

A single lightning and wind materia can be obtained from Chadley with 30 World Intel points, specifically obtaining 30 Junon Region data points. No other lightning and wind materia can be obtained.

Use[]

The lightning and wind materia grants the three tiers of both lightning and wind-elemental spells, but requires significant AP to fully level. At maximum level, it fills the same purpose as equipping both a lightning and a wind materia on that party member, but using one slot instead of two. Doing so grants the user more freedom in support materia pairings.

Lightning and wind materia can be effective in providing a spellcaster the ability to target both elements while preserving their materia slots. This is effective on party members with high Magic Magic attributes (Aerith, Cloud, Yuffie, or Cait Sith). Using Magnify Materia Magnify Materia can spread this damage to groups of enemies who are vulnerable to the spell to create deadly, MP-efficient attacks. Magic Focus Materia Magic Focus Materia can increase the strength of the spells against certain opponents, Magic Efficiency Materia Magic Efficiency Materia can reduce their cost, and Swiftcast Materia Swiftcast Materia can speed cast time, particularly of Thundaga or Aeroga. Though Synergy Materia Synergy Materia and Auto-Cast Materia Auto-Cast Materia can be used to auto-cast Thunder, this is an inefficient use of lightning and wind materia.

An important support materia pairing is the elemental materia, which fundamentally changes the purpose of the materia. Pairing lightning and wind with support materia on a weapon imbues attacks with lightning or wind damage, depending on if the opponent is weak to either element. This can be effective on party members with high Strength Strength attributes (Cloud, Tifa, Red XIII, Yuffie, or Cait Sith). A good battle for this setup is against Rude and Elena who commonly team up, as Rude is weak to wind and Elena is weak to lightning. Pairing the lightning and wind materia on armor will instead resist (or at full level, absorb) both lightning and wind damage, making it a very strong pairing on party members who prefer to tank damage such as Cloud, Barret, or Red XIII. Doing so in combination with Provoke Materia Provoke Materia can be effective to protect other party members.

The lightning and wind materia can be incredibly effective as both a defensive mechanism if paired with elemental materia, or an offensive mechanism if paired with elemental or with another spellcasting materia. However, its rarity means that players can only use it for one or the other use at a time. For general cases, lightning and wind materia can alleviate the need for strategic planning around certain elemental weaknesses or attacks; for specific battles when players know which elemental attacks or weaknesses they will encounter, strategic planning is ideal to use the lightning and wind materia most effectively.
