Story[]

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. (Skip section)
Part 1

Lightning lands on Palamecia with the warning that "those who do not fight are forgotten". The journey has left her no different than a common Blank, yet she can remember fragments of her former life in a distant world. Wol, however, is quite aware of her legend. Memories of the Hanging Edge now manifest on Palamecia's surface. The prophecy states that the Warrior of Light will "free the lightning". Neither Wol, nor Echo, nor Lightning herself understands what this could mean.

Lacking anger and despair that drove her previously on her journeys, Lightning lacks strength to fight and has to rely on Wol's assistance. The woman is also confused about herself as she says that she was once known as "Lightning" and has memories of "Lightning" in her, but no emotional attachment. When she manifests her eidolith, showing its dying light, the crystal offers itself to Wol, startling the two and Echo.

Traveling through the Hanging Edge, Lightning talks a bit about her past, revealing many hardships she has suffered. Coming to a dead end, Lightning falls into despair, seeing there's no way forward, the possibility of staying in Palamecia, never returning back home. At the same time, Bahamut comes flying and from the depths of her despair Lightning manifests her eidolon, Odin, who protects her from the flying eidolon's attack. Bahamut then flies away and Lightning departs on Odin, following him, much to Wol and Echo's horror because of her inability to fight.

Part 2

Wol arrives just in time to witness Lightning and Odin square off against Bahamut, but Odin stands motionless. Still lacking in the ability to fight, Lightning is pinned before Wol intervenes to drive Bahamut away. Lightning explains more about the Eidolons, including their purpose and how they bond with those of her world. Odin has been her companion for ages, but senses that the woman before him is not the Lightning he knew.

Once again, Wol takes point as the two battle their way through the Hanging Edge, meeting Bahamut and Hecatoncheir along the way. Though she is thankful for Wol's aid, Lightning is adamant in that she must face her former ally Odin alone to bond with him again. She does so weakened, and is again pinned down. Before Odin can land the killing blow, Wol steps in and takes him on. In a hard-fought contest between the two, Wol once again prevails, and frees a rose-colored crystal for Lightning to take in hand. This crystal, Lightning's light of hope, is the very thing she was missing all along.

Her strength renewed, Lightning prepares to depart, but Wol makes one last request of her: a duel to the death at full strength. Though he falls to her, his heart is glad for the privilege. Guided anew by memories of her friends, Lightning departs. Each has hope that they will one day meet again.

Spoilers end here.

Gameplay[]

Zones

Lightning Resurrection takes place on four distinct zone maps:

  • The Hanging Edge currently contains 73 battle nodes, and is a system of gates, switches, and train cars that must be manipulated to move through the zone. Battles here award CP (Crystagen Points) as in the source game.
  • Wol receives a crystal that is its own area map. He can spend accumulated CP to unlock paths between battle nodes. As he completes each series of three battles, he will gain a new augment to use in the Hanging Edge zone.
Wol's Crystarium and roles

As Wol advances through his personal Crystarium, he gains access to three Paradigm roles that boost his stats for one complete round in one battle:

As in the source game, bonuses were applied based on the cumulative number of nodes activated within each role. Green nodes contained bonuses applicable to Wol throughout the event area.
