Lightning (雷撃? or らいげき, Raigeki?, lit. Lightning Attack), sometimes called Thunderbolt, Thunder, Lit Flash, or Shock, is a recurring enemy ability in the series. It deals moderate Lightning-elemental damage to the party, and is commonly used by bosses.

Final Fantasy
Thunderbolt (originally called Thunder) inflicts moderate to massive Lightning-elemental damage to the party, and is used by Shinryu, Cerberus, Tiamat, and Blue Dragon.
Final Fantasy II
Lightning inflicts Lightning-elemental damage to the party, and is mostly used by the powerful Lightning-elemental enemies such as Blue Dragon and Tiamat. Phrekyos can also use it if the player challenges him after learning 11 or more of the plot's Key Terms.
Final Fantasy III
Thunder inflicts moderate Lightning-elemental damage to the party, and is used by Garuda, Cerberus, Ahriman, the left Tentacle of Cloud of Darkness (3D version), Thor, Chimera Mage, and Haokah.
Final Fantasy IV
Lightning (originally called Thunder) inflicts moderate Lightning-elemental damage and can target one or more characters. It is used by Tyrannosaurus, Ramuh, Lunar Ramuh, Barbariccia, Zeromus EG, and Geryon.
Final Fantasy IV -Interlude-
Lightning is used by Ramuh and Yellow Dragon. It inflicts moderate lightning-elemental damage to the party.
Thunderbolt is used by Ramuh and does damage equal to half of the target's max HP.
Final Fantasy IV: The After Years
Shock is a Ninjutsu ability, used by Edge and Zangetsu at the cost of 7 MP. It inflicts Lightning-elemental damage to all enemies.
Final Fantasy V
Lightning is an enemy ability used by several enemies and bosses, including Bahamut, Ramuh, and Hydra. It inflicts major Lightning-elemental damage to the party equivalent to 1/4th of their maximum HP. The player may utilize this ability by catching and releasing a Hydra or Yellow Dragon.
Final Fantasy VI
Lightning is an enemy ability used by Apparition, which deals medium physical damage. This is one of the few instances in which Lightning isn't Lightning-elemental.
Final Fantasy VII
Lightning is an enemy ability used by the Thunderbird, which inflicts moderate Lightning-elemental damage to the entire party.

Lightning is an enemy-exclusive ability that inflicts minor to moderate Lightning elemental damage to one target, and is used by Asp, Mutadragon, Nidhogg, and Zahak.
Vagrant Story
Lightning Bolt is an Air elemental spell which affects one body part. It is used by Ghost, Zombie Mage, Dark Eye, Imp, Crimson Blade, Djinn, Air Elemental, and Shadow.
Final Fantasy Legend II
Lightng is a magical attack that has 15 uses, it also increases a Robot's HP by 9. The damage formula for Lightng is the user's Mana x5. The ability target's all enemies, and deals Thunder-elemental damage. This attack can be used by FengLung, Sei-Ryu, Wyrm, Minion, Odin, and TianLung.
Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light
Lightning is used by the second and third forms of Chaos. When the ability is used it causes a sphere of dark lightning to attack all members of the opposing party, inflicting moderate Light-elemental damage.

Etymology
Lightning is a sudden electrostatic discharge during an electrical storm between electrically charged regions of a cloud (called intra-cloud lightning or IC), between that cloud and another cloud (CC lightning), or between a cloud and the ground (CG lightning).

AThunder is the sound caused by lightning. Depending on the distance and nature of the lightning, thunder can range from a sharp, loud crack to a long, low rumble (brontide).
