The Lich (リッチ, Ritchi?), also called Rich, is a recurring enemy and boss in the Final Fantasy series. While he has no consistent appearance, he is always a magical-aligned undead. The Lich is sometimes teamed up with Marilith, the Kraken, and Tiamat to make the Four Fiends.
Appearances
Final Fantasy
The Lich makes his first appearance, where he is one of the Four Fiends, the first one the Warriors of Light face in the Cavern of Earth. Defeating him opens the way to the depths of the Earthgift Shrine.
Final Fantasy IV: The After Years
The fiend from the original Final Fantasy appears along with the rest of the original Four Fiends. Upon defeat, he relinquishes the Assassin's Dagger.
Final Fantasy VI
Lich is a normal monster the party can encounter in the Cave to the Sealed Gate.
Final Fantasy IX
Lich is a stronger version of a Guardian of Terra, Earth Guardian, who battles Zidane and Quina in the Earth Shrine. The whole party fights him as Lich in Memoria. A crystal clone can also be found as a random encounter at the Crystal World.
Final Fantasy X-2
Lich is a normal enemy encountered at the Djose Highroad, Mi'ihen Highroad, Mushroom Rock Road, Macalania Woods, and Calm Lands.
Final Fantasy XI
Liches are mid-level members of the Skeleton genus. They can be found in a variety of areas including Western Altepa Desert (at night only), Attohwa Chasm (at night only), the Sacrarium, Toraimarai Canal, the Eldieme Necropolis, and the past version of the Eldieme Necropolis.
Liches are generally unexceptional members of their type, using their scythes and black magic determined by their level to attack. However, the liches found in the present time version of the Eldieme Necropolis are special because they randomly drop Ancient Papyrus, one of three items needed to advance beyond level 50.
Final Fantasy XII
Lich is a normal enemy encountered in the corridors of the Tomb of Raithwall.
Final Fantasy XV
Lich is an enemy fought in Steyliff Grove in Cleigne and during the Softly Now, Mighty Foes Hunt. It employs Fire-elemental attacks and is capable of inflicting the Disenchanted status.
Final Fantasy Tactics
An esper born in, of, and to darkness. Deals out devastating dark damage.
Description
Lich (Rich in the original English release) is a summon spell. Lich is an undead mage that spits out a blast of black lightning as it flies overhead. This attack is especially effective against Lucavi demons as it can even do 999 damage to Ultima. This is because Lich's attack works by dealing half of a monster's maximum health in damage, and bosses such as Ultima have well over the 1998 health required to reach to the damage cap.
It costs 40 MP to summon, has a speed of 12, and needs 600 JP to learn. Lich has a 20% chance of randomly being learned in battle by a Summoner who has not yet learned it and is not KO'd by it, or absorbs at least 1 HP worth of damage. Nullifying the damage does not count.
In the original PlayStation version, when summoned, the summoner will sometimes mutter, "Death song, death door, death river awaiting! Rich!". This was removed from the Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions.
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
Although not an enemy of its own, Lich is a specific Zombie boss and one of the four Falgabirds. This is a reference to the original Lich from Final Fantasy.
Final Fantasy Adventure
The Lich is a boss found within the Sealed Cave. It attacks by throwing skulls, and will drop the Nuke when defeated.
The Final Fantasy Legend
The Lich is not a fightable enemy, but is a possible monster that the party's monster unit(s) can transform into.
Final Fantasy Legend II
The Lich is an enemy and also a possible monster that the party's monster unit(s) can transform into.
Vagrant Story
Lich appears as a boss. A strong version, Lich Lord exists as a palette swap enemy. They are both of the Evil Class.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles
Lich is a recurring antagonist and boss appearing as what seems a ghostly Yuke.
Final Fantasy Dimensions II
Lich appears as an antagonist and as a summon. He is one of the Four Fiends, creatures seeking to destroy the Crystal. His design is based on his appearance from the original Final Fantasy.
Lich first appears as a boss in the Mysidia Cathedral at the end of the second chapter. Under the servitude of the Deathlord, he fights Morrow and his party in an attempt to stop them from further interfering with his master's plan. Despite the Fiend's powerful magics, Morrow and his comrades are able to defeat Lich.
Lich appears before the party in the Chaos Torrent in a final attempt to stop them, but he is again defeated.
