Battle

Leviathan moves swiftly through the waters, often coming up in a fury to attack Noctis. She will fire water projectiles at the player, which are very fast and deal damage if not avoided.

Initially, the battle leaves the player with little means of damaging Leviathan, but this sequence is short-lived, and ends after enough damage with warp-strikes is inflicted.

It is impossible to lose this battle as Leviathan does not attack fast enough to damage Noctis before his HP fully regenerates. His HP increases drastically at this point as well.

Strategy

During the first sequence, the player must simply point-warp throughout the platforms to survive and evade Leviathan's attacks. When given the opportunity, they should deal a damage with warp-strikes. The first sequence ends after dealing a certain and fairly minimal amount of damage to Leviathan.

During the second sequence, Noctis can fly and deals far more damage with the Armiger. The player should hold down the attack button whenever Leviathan comes up, approach her and continuously lay into her, preferably locking onto her. Her water projectiles are fast, though they can be evaded if the player moves quickly and stays phased.

When Leviathan's health is depleted, the player should simply parry to defeat her.

Musical themes

The battle music for Leviathan is "Apocalypsis Aquarius", a version of "Apocalypsis Noctis".

Etymology

Leviathan (Biblical Hebrew לִוְיָתָן or לווייתן Liwyāthān) is a violent sea creature referred to in the Hebrew Bible as well as the Talmud and some other ancient Jewish texts. The Ugaritic equivalent being Lotan. During the golden age of seafaring, the term Leviathan became synonymous with any large sea creature, sometimes describing whales. Bible scholars interpreted Leviathan to be either a demonic sea creature and an enemy of God.

The Talmud and other ancient Jewish sources refer to Leviathan more specifically as a sea serpent, sometimes with multiple heads capable of breathing fire, that was made on the fifth day of Creation. It is said that during the end of days, God will make tents, or sukkah, out of the skin of Leviathan for the righteous to live in. Some have speculated that Leviathan was based on a real animal, the most popular theory being the Kronosaurus and the Nile crocodile.

Leviathan is also one of the seven princes of Hell associated with the deadly sin Envy and Hell's gatekeeper in Christian demonology.

In the Final Fantasy series, Leviathan is sometimes referred to as the King of the Seas. Its incarnation in the series appears to derive from the legends of the Shinto god Ryūjin or Owatatsumi, said to be the dragon god that reigns over the seas. It also resembles the Chinese dragon, mystical beings seen as the rulers of moving bodies of water, and the Dragon God as the dispenser of rain.

Trivia

  • In the second part of this battle, Noctis wields every royal arm, including the ones he hasn't obtained yet. Executing a complete combo has Noctis will finish using the same attack pattern he uses when finishing a combo with the Sword of the Father, which at this point should be in Ravus's possession.
  • Noctis's moves become warps. However, as this is limited to the locations of his weapons, he cannot warp while sending his weapons to attack Leviathan, and instead moves normally.
  • This boss battle was overhauled in the day one patch. In 1.00 the camera is fixed behind the player making it hard to see what Noctis is doing.
