Lessens one opponent's HP by 1/2
Description
Laser is an attack spell in Final Fantasy VII. It is an enemy skill used by Death Claw and Dark Dragon, which can be learned on the Enemy Skill Materia for the player to use.
Obtained[]
If obtaining all enemy skills the earliest they are available, Laser is the seventh spell learned on the Materia. It is learned from Death Claw in the unrevisitable part of Corel Prison. Death Claw only uses Laser when it has either Barrier or MBarrier, and even then there is only a 25% chance it will use it. It may be easier to learn Laser via manipulation.
Laser is also used by the Dark Dragon much later on, in the Northern Cave, but it will only use it when manipulated.
Stats[]
Command Materia | Enemy Skill Materia |
---|---|
Effect | Gravity-elemental damage equal to 1/2 target's current HP to one target. |
MP cost | 16 |
Reflect | Yes |
Laser deals fractional damage, and reduces the target's current HP by 50%, provided they have no resistance or immunity to the Gravity element. Its damage is unaffected by the user's Magic stat.
Use[]
Laser halves a target's HP, up to the 9999 HP damage cap. Laser has the same effect as the spell Demi2, but with a smaller MP cost. However, Demi2 can benefit from paired Support Materia whereas Laser cannot. The item T/S Bomb also has the same effect as Demi2 and Laser. Laser can be reflected, whereas Demi2 cannot be.
Laser is a good opening move against enemies with high HP, such as Valron, Harpy, Vlakorados, Death Machine, Wolfmeister, Eagle Gun, the enemies in Sunken Gelnika, Behemoth, Dark Dragon (can be manipulated to cast it onto itself), Dragon Zombie, and Iron Man. Laser kills Ghirofelgo in the Mansion; the Ancient Dragon in the Temple of the Ancients; and Magnade and Icicle in the Great Glacier outright, as they are weak to Gravity.
Laser can also be good for depleting enemies' health for setting them them to be morphed without fear of killing them.
Etymology[]
laser is a device that emits light through a process of optical amplification based on the stimulated emission of electromagnetic radiation. A laser differs from other sources of light because it emits light coherently allowing to be focused to a tight spot and to stay narrow over long distances.
