Larva Eater is a Rare Game enemy found in the Great Crystal in Final Fantasy XII. It is a stronger version of the Gargoyle, and is notoriously laborious to spawn. The ultimate dagger can only be obtained from it. It is also fought in the Zodiac versions' Trial Mode at Stage 56 along with 4 Elvorets.

Even if it can be killed only once, two versions of Larva Eater exist, though they have identical stats and spoils. The only difference is that one is on Lv.47–48 and the other on Lv.61–62. It is immune to Libra, so the player can't observe its level.

How to find

Map 46 The Great Crystal

Great Crystal map showing locations where the Larva Eater may spawn

The Larva Eater is one of the toughest enemies to spawn, mainly because of the criteria required to spawn it.

The spawn method based on the The Zodiac Age Ultimania explains that it appears after the player has killed 256 enemies since their last travel with a Waystone, and will only spawn at Waystones III-X, XIII-XVII and XX, and subsequently after the next 30 to 255 kills. Kills in this case include any enemies that self-destruct, such as Mom Bombs, and killing enemies that spawn from using Divide, such as Necrophobes. It is not required to maintain chains, though doing so makes it easy to keep track how many enemies have been killed. As with the Reaper, leaving the Great Crystal or reloading the save file will reset the kill count.

The areas where the Larva Eater will spawn near a Waystone are Dha Vikaari Jula (Waystone III), A Vikaari Bhrum (Waystone IV), Dha Vikaari Trahk (Waystone V), A Vikaari Kabonii (Waystone VI), Dha Vikaari Bhrum (Waystone VII), A Prama Vikaari (Waystone VIII), A Vikaari Dhebon (Waystone IX), Dha Vikaari Kabonii (Waystone X), Dha Vikaari Dhebon Praa (Waystone XIII), Dha Vikaari Dhebon Pratii (Waystone XIV), A Vikaari Uldobi (Waystone XV), Dha Vikaari Sirhru (Waystone XVI), A Vikaari Kanbhru (Waystone XVII) and A Vikaari Kanbhru Ra (Waystone XX).

Spawning tips

The hardly understood mechanics of the spawning condition explain the variability many players encounter in their attempt to spawn the Larva Eater and subsequently obtain the ultimate dagger. Below are some of the different methods that have been used:

Using Necrophobes

The player can clear out Necrophobes near the Leo Gate Stone. Allowing at least 5 of the Necrophobes to divide will result in 45 Necrophobes in the area that the player must defeat. After all of the Necrophobes have been defeated, the player should keep zoning between the area with the Leo Gate Stone and the Waystone XIV area until Larva Eater appears in the Waystone XIV. If the Larva Eater does not drop the Danjuro (original version) or Mina (Zodiac versions), the player can zone two areas away from the Waystone XIV area (through the Leo Gate Stone area so the Necrophobes do not respawn), return to the Leo Gate Stone area and again start zoning between the Leo Gate Stone area and the Waystone XIV area until the Larva Eater reappears in the Waystone XIV.

Using Mom Bomb

The player can eliminate the Mom Bombs spawning in areas near Waystone XX 256 times. The trick is to travel from Waystone XX (A Vikaari Sirhru) to the Sagittarius Gate Stone (Sthaana Sagittarius) and back in a circle fashion for a total of four key areas. Each three area apart from the Waystone XX area contain five Mom Bombs. Multiply this amount 17 times and 255 enemies have been taken down. This method is also useful if the player is chaining the Larva Eater. Mom Bombs could be taken down through the use of Bleed and Toxify spells, or wait for them to Self-Destruct.

In The Zodiac Age version, the player can reload their auto-save if the Larva Eater does not drop the desired spoil and try again.
