Landenel Peaumasquier is a non-playable character in Final Fantasy XIV. He is a former member of the Company of Heroes and the captain of Sixth Spear of the Wood Wailers.
History[]
Early life[]
Because his father was a criminal, the population judged young Landenel for his father's crimes. Eventually his mother would pass away. Landenel had become friends with Ywain Deepwell. They were almost inseparable. But the townsfolk's disdain for Landenel did not cease, and he feared their ire would soon turn toward Ywain. Rather than risk the well-being of his dear friend, Landenel abandoned what little remained of his world. Still Ywain took the blame for a lapse in judgment by Landenel and was dismissed from the Wood Wailer, later Swethyna would come to discover Ywain innocence and ask him to return as the Guildmaster.[2] Landenel was convinced the world hated him, and he returned the feeling in kind. He'd become a monster.[3]
Eventually he would meet Lorens, the commander of the Company of Heroes, and was welcomed by the Company. Lorens was the one who freed Landenel from the life he was leading and gave him a new purpose. When Landenel joined he had a duel with commander. Lorens insisted that they should fight "on equal terms", putting their guns aside for a spear versus spear fight. Despite the disadvantage, Lorens won easily. Since then, Landenel vowed that he would follow him anywhere until the day he could return the favor.
Together with the Company of Heroes, Landenel faced and defeated Titan and Leviathan several times. However, before the Calamity, Lorens suddenly disbanded the Company and sent its members on separate ways, requesting that they continue to uphold the Company's creed, and then the commander disappeared. Doing his best to honor the promise, Landenel returned to Gridania and joined the Wood Wailers. He hid his past in the Company of Heroes and strove to maintain a reputation.[3] Landenel learned to play cards during his sellsword days, and he continues to challenge adventurers to the occasional casual match, oft besting them with daring gambits.[1]
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn[]
Five years after the Calamity, the Kobolds again summoned their primal. In the absence of the Company of Heroes, the Scions sought out Wheiskaet to abrender information about the Titan. Wheiskaet did not trust that the Scions had the ability to take on the primal and refused to divulge any information before they proved their worth. And to do so, the Warrior of Light should follow the instructions of the former members of the Company to prepare a feast.[4]
To obtain the first ingredient, the Warrior of Light meets with Landenel at Camp Tranquil. Landenel says that an adamantoise egg would be suitable for the banquet. However, he believes that Warrior of Light would surely perish if he tried to take it, and stated that other heroes would show up to defeat the Titan even if he did not. After Warrior of Light returns with the adamantoise egg, Landenel is impressed by the reckless bravery. Landenel says he will make sure the egg gets into Wheiskaet's hands, and asks Warrior of Light to travel to Forgotten Springs in Southern Thanalan and talk to U'odh Nunh to obtain the next ingredient.[5] After the banquet is done, Wheiskaet revealed the banquet was an excuse for his comrades to assess their worthiness to face Titan. The five members of the Company of Heroes agreed that Warrior of Light had the qualities necessary to defeat the Lord of Crags.[6]
Dissatisfied with his current life, Landenel decided to resign from his post in the Wood Wailers to search for Lorens. The Warrior of Light deliver an anonymous letter to Landenel. The letter said that Lorens has passed away, and a memorial service is to be held in his honor. The service would be hosted by none other than Wheiskaet, who recently agreed to help Landenel search for his commander. Landenel expresses his intention to go to the Costa del Sol to demand an explanation from Wheiskaet and requests the Warrior of Light presence at the meeting lest he do something he will later regret. Wheiskaet says he has no knowledge of the commander's death nor plans for a memorial service. Landenel is relieved to hear this news and reaffirms his intention to resign from the Wood Wailers to search for Lorens. However, Landenel's renewed fervor to abandon his duties forces Wheiskaet to reconsider the purpose of the letter. Almost certain of the missive's writer and his intent, he refuses to help Landenel.[3]
Shamani Lohmani theorizes that after the dissolution of the company, Lorens continued to watch Landenel. And upon noticing his growing discontent, he decided to act and sent the letter. Landenel goes to the cliff where he met Lorens. Although the commander is far from being found, Landenel finally understands that the commander wanted him and his companions to go their own ways and decides to return to his chosen place among the Wood Wailers.[3]
Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood[]
After Alka Zolka and the Warrior of Light return to Camp Tranquil with an unconscious Setoto Seto, Landenel arrives offering help. Despite his rudeness about Setoto's appearance, Landenel offers a place for her to recover.[7] Eventually Landenel reports that his men spotted a ghost in the forest, the ghost had a description matching the partially summoned Lilac, and the Warrior of Light and Alka decide to investigate. Upon returning to the Camp, Landenel told them that one of his men had just been attacked by the ghost fairy, who then escaped to the Lost City of Amdapor. But before they can continue their pursuit, they should first receive permission from the Order of the Twin Adder to enter the ruins.[8] Once you get permission, Landenel, Alka Zolka, and the Warrior of Light enter the ruins to pursue the ghost fairy. The purple sphere merges with Kuribu─one of the guardian statues. After defeating it, the party returns to Camp Tranquil and they meet Setoto finally awake.[9]
Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker[]
Due to the threat of the Final Days in La Noscea, Merlwyb has reunited the members of the Company of Heroes once again and suggests reforming the Company once more to help track down the blasphemy that has appeared in the region, and prevent the Crushing Tide from summoning the Leviathan. With Commander Lorens absent, the members agree to appoint Warrior of Light as the new acting commander.[10]
Following the orders of the Warrior of Light via linkpearl, Landenel and U'odh Nunh defended Candlekeep Quay from an attack by the Crushing Tide. After the attack the Company of Heroes sets out in search of Doww, who is hiding on a deserted island in the Cieldalaes. At the location the party encounters the blasphemy and discovers that it originated from the Indigo Matriarch, queen of the Sahagin. The party manages to escape thanks to a shot from Lorens that does not reveal himself.[11] Knowing that Lorens' abilities would be needed, the Warrior of Light meets with him and recruits him back into the Company of Heroes. Eventually, Wheiskaet warns that the blasphemy has been drawn to the Sastasha Seagrot. Warrior of Light, Lorens and Merlwyb set off to confront the beast. In the middle of the fight, members of the Company arrive on the scene and help defeat the Indigo Matriarch. Once everything has been resolved, the Company members are finally reunited with their former commander and the Company of Heroes is dissolved once again.[12]
A blasphemy known as Gleipnir had also appeared in Twelveswood, where Landenel commanded his men according to the orders of the Elder Seedseer Kan-E-Senna. The Wailers closed the roads to all travel as they scoured the forest for signs of the Gleipnir. But a group of villagers began to demand that the road to Thanalan be opened. Landenel reported the situation to Kan-E-Senna, who left for the scene to calm the population and prevent the emergence of new beasts.[13]
