Lamia Matriarch is a Soul of Rebirth enemy in Final Fantasy II. She is a palette swap of the Lamia, meant to resemble the Lamia species introduced in Final Fantasy IV, and is a somewhat dangerous enemy when first encountered; she can inflict Confuse on party members with her Charm IX attack, as well as inflict Sleep with her physical attack.

Their Blizzard XII spell is hardly noticeable compared to the other two abilities. They can be dealt with in a variety of ways, but should be taken care of either first or last, depending on which enemies they come with. If they come with Cait Siths, it is advised to defeat the Cait Siths first.

The Lamia Matriarch can drop the powerful Ribbon, making it a useful enemy to farm. They can also provide the Thunder Spear, which grants the party free access to to the spell Thunder XVI.

Etymology[]

In Greek mythology, Lamia was a beautiful Libyan queen who turned into a child-eating demon. She is often referred to as having the lower half of a snake and sometimes a large mouth (lamia in Greek means "large shark", while laimos means gullet).

Later characteristics attributed to her are similar to that of succubi, in that the lamia seduces men, enticing them to feed on their blood. It is said they reside in towers or secluded areas and have magical abilities.
