Prologue[]
(The film opens on a white screen.)
Lunafreya Nox Fleuret: (narrating) For centuries the sacred magic of the Divine Crystal blessed our world and its people.
("Square Enix Presents" is superimposed over the Crystal.)
Lunafreya: (narrating) But, in time, the promise of its power brought war to our lands.
(King Regis sits in the throne room inside the Citadel in the Lucian city of Insomnia, surrounded by his inner court.)
Lunafreya: (narrating) Lucis, a peaceful kingdom of great magic kept safe by the power of the Crystal.
(Emperor Aldercapt and Chancellor Ardyn Izunia stand amidst a magitek army.)
Lunafreya: (narrating) And Niflheim, a military empire of vast machinery made strong by the might of its magitek. Long has war raged between the two. As the years passed, Niflheim marched on nearby nations, driven by its unsurpassed technology. To defend itself, Lucis raised a magical wall the strength of which comes from the Crystal itself. Insomnia alone, the crown city and last bastion of Lucian defense, remained beyond Niflheim reach for many years.
("Executive Producer Yosuke Matsuda." A twelve-year-old Lunafreya pushes an eight-year-old Noctis in his wheelchair through the wooded groves of Tenebrae.)
Lunafreya: (narrating) Amid the escalating war, Prince Noctis of Lucis had come to Tenebrae to seek healing for a grievous injury. He made the long journey together with his father, King Regis.
("Screenplay Takashi Hasegawa." The gathered group includes Lunafreya's mother, Lady Sylva, her son and Lunafreya's brother, Ravus, and King Regis's Shield, Clarus Amicitia.)
Lunafreya: (narrating) Mother, brother, and I, the royalty of Tenebrae, had all welcomed their visit.
("Music John Graham. Main Theme Yoko Shimomura." A Niflheim army, led by General Glauca descends upon the congregation in Tenebrae.)
("Art Directors Kenji Niki, Hiroto Ide, Yusuke Suzuki." The army attacks.)
Lunafreya: (narrating) It was then that the fires came, everywhere and all at once.
("Editor Keiichi Kojima." Ravus is wounded and falls. An MT points a stream of fire at him, and his mother steps in front of it to shield him.)
Lunafreya: (narrating) In a mere instant, the whole of Tenebrae was ablaze.
Sylva Via Fleuret: Ravus!
("Casting Producer Gabriel Moszkowski." Lady Sylva is then stabbed by General Glauca, killing her.)
Ravus Nox Fleuret: Mother!
("Producer Larry Sparks." General Glauca continues his pursuit of the Lucian royalty, attacking King Regis.)
Regis Lucis Caelum: General Glauca.
("Producer Shinji Hashimoto." King Regis summons his sword and Royal Arms to fend off General Glauca.)
Luna: (narrating) The Niflheim attack was an attempt on the lives of the visiting Lucian royalty.
("Producer Kosei Ito." King Regis picks up Noctis and takes Lunafreya's hand in order to escape with them.)
King Regis: Noctis!
Ravus: Please, help us! King Regis!
("Producer Hajime Tabata." Pursued closely by the Niflheim army, Lunafreya lets go of Regis's hand to allow him and Noctis to escape.)
King Regis: Lunafreya...
Noctis Lucis Caelum: Luna!
Lunafreya: (narrating) From that day until this day, Tenebrae has been gripped in the iron fist of Niflheim, sworn enemy of Lucis.
("Director Takeshi Nozue.")
("Twelve years pass...")
Under Siege[]
Lunafreya: (narrating) King Regis assembles a force of mighty warriors to combat the imperial menace. Dubbed the Kingsglaive, they fight relentlessly against Niflheim, empowered by the magic of their sovereign.
(In the Lucian outskirts, the Kingsglaive battle a Niflheim-driven army that includes magitek infantry alongside Behemoths and Ahrimans.)
Luche Lazarus: (into earpiece) All units, move to secure the wall. If they break through, we're done.
(Libertus Ostium uses cloaking magic to take out Niflheim soldiers.)
Libertus Ostium: What's the hold-up, Crowe?
(Crowe Altius and other mages stand on a parapet as they summon a fire storm above the advancing army.)
Captain Drautos: (over radio) Crowe! Status?
Crowe: (into earpiece) Almost there...
(One of the mages collapses.)
Crowe: No!
Luche: (over radio) I need help. East wall's going down. Pelna, can you get to me?
Pelna Khara: Lucis isn't paying us refugees enough for this!
(Pelna fights his way across the battlefield to protect his fallen comrade, only to get cornered by a charging behemoth.)
Pelna: How is this fair?
(Nyx Ulric arrives and warp-strikes to slay the behemoth.)
Pelna: Nyx, I owe you one.
Nyx: You and everyone else.
Tredd Furia: (over radio) We need support on the east flank. Nyx, where are you?
Nyx: I'm on my way. Pelna, fall back and regroup with the others.
Pelna: Go easy on the magic, hero. You got people waiting for you back home.
Nyx: I'm worth the wait.
Tredd: Show-off.
(Libertus faces off against an Ahriman.)
Luche: (over radio) Watch your back, Libertus. We got more incoming.
Libertus: We ain't gonna last much longer. Crowe!
(The mages on the parapet succeed in summoning the fire storm, and it touches down.)
Crowe: Yes!
Luche: (over radio) All Glaives, fall back. Repeat, all Glaives fall back!
(The fire storm rages across the battlefield, and monsters and Glaives alike are caught in its vortex. Still separated, Nyx and Libertus hunker down as the sun sets below the horizon. On a Niflheim airship, the Empire readies its next attack.)
Niflheim Man: Release the daemon.
(Niflheim airships release an enormous Diamond Weapon onto the battlefield. It destroys all in its path as it advances on the Kingsglaive.)
(Crowe and the other mages expend the last of their energy trying to maintain the fire storm to no avail, and Diamond Weapon releases a missile-like attack.)
Captain Drautos: (over radio) We can't take down that daemon. I'm ordering a full retreat. Get back here alive. That's an order. For hearth and home.
(Libertus is caught underneath fallen rubble as the Glaives retreat. Nyx spots him.)
Glaive: (over radio) All units, fall back to the extraction point. Support is inbound.
Luche: Nyx! We have to get out of here. Nyx! We have orders!
Nyx: Yeah.
Girl's Voice: (memory) Help!
Luche: Nyx!
Nyx: Oh, that idiot.
(Nyx shakes off Luche and warp-strikes back towards Libertus.)
Crowe: Nyx!
Pelna: Crowe, we gotta move.
Libertus: You gotta be kidding me.
(Nyx attempts to fight off the Cerberus that is approaching Libertus. An Ahriman unintentionally frees Libertus from beneath the rubble, and Nyx fends it off before handing his friend his second kukri.)
Libertus: Whoa, whoa, whoa! You know I ain't got the stomach for this crap.
Nyx: Would you rather walk? Come on, just like Galahd Canyon back home.
(As the ground beneath them crumbles, they use the kukris to warp to safety. The Cerberus falls into the canyon below as Diamond Weapon continues to advance.)
Nyx: Libertus!
(After the retreat, Captain Drautos arrives at the extraction point.)
Captain Drautos: Luche, report.
Luche: The imperial forces look to be withdrawing, sir.
(The Niflheim army withdraws from the territory. Libertus is carried to a van on a stretcher.)
Libertus: Guess I owe you another one.
Nyx: I'll put it on your tab. You just try and get some rest, alright?
Captain Drautos: You disobeyed a direct order to retreat.
Nyx: "For hearth and home," right, sir? As long as I got strength in my body, I obey that order.
Captain Drautos: Don't fool yourself, Nyx Ulric. Whatever strength you have is on loan from the king. You are nothing without him. Await details of your reassignment.
(The Kingsglaive return to the walled city of Insomnia.)
("Kingsglaive Final Fantasy XV" is superimposed over a view of the entire city of Insomnia.)
The Chancellor[]
(Inside the throne room of the Citadel, Captain Drautos kneels in front of King Regis.)
Captain Drautos: Yes, Your Majesty. Despite their victory all but assured.
King Regis: A sudden and inexplicable retreat.
Clarus Amicitia: We are at risk nonetheless, Your Majesty. We cannot know when they will strike again.
(A man comes hurriedly into the throne room, cutting the conversation short.)
Man: Your Majesty, word from the West Gate. A man claiming to be an envoy of the Empire requests an audience.
A Modest Proposal[]
(A little later, King Regis and his council wait for the envoy in the throne room.)
Man: (voice over) The envoy from Niflheim awaits without, Your Majesty.
(The man serving as envoy is escorted into the throne room by a pair of Crownsguard, whom King Regis dismisses.)
???: Hello there. Hello! Good day to you...and you. Well met, my dear Lucians.
King Regis: Has Niflheim grown so bold that they send the chancellor himself as envoy? And under no guard, at that?
Chancellor Izunia: It is an honor to be recognized by the great King Regis! Yet, permit me to stand on ceremony and introduce myself nonetheless.
(The chancellor doffs his hat and bows.)
Chancellor Izunia: Ardyn Izunia, chancellor of Niflheim, at your humble service. And I come to you on this most auspicious of days to offer terms of peace.
King Regis: "Peace?"
Chancellor Izunia: As you no doubt surmised, that recent maneuver of ours was no strategic retreat. Call it...
(Chancellor Izunia puts his foot on the first step leading up to the throne before proceeding slowly up them.)
Chancellor Izunia: A gesture of imperial goodwill. Like you, we wish nothing more than to bring a swift end to this senseless war.
King Regis: Is that so?
Chancellor Izunia: It is, indeed. And we require but a singular compliance: save your grand Insomnia here, Lucis must forfeit all territories to Niflheim rule.
(The assembled council looks to King Regis, who holds up his hand for silence.)
Chancellor Izunia: Ah, Insomnia! The jewel in the crown of the Lucian kingdom. How foolish of me to forget. There is just one more trivial thing. It concerns your son. The fetching Prince Noctis of Lucis and the fair Princess Lunafreya of Tenebrae...they are to be wed. You seem vexed, Your Highness. I assure you, the princess still holds you in the highest regard as she has done all these twelve long years.
Far From Home[]
(Nyx stands on guard duty at one of Insomnia's traffic stops. A member of the Crownsguard approaches him.)
Petra Fortis: Don't know if anyone's told you, but we don't take kindly to insubordination around here.
(Nyx doesn't react or respond.)
Petra: Do yourself a favor, take a look around. This is what a hundred years of peace looks like. It's a lasting peace made by the Wall and the Wall alone.
(Petra gets in Nyx's face, and Nyx still refuses to react.)
Petra: See, we don't need any of you immigrants jumping around, playing war hero.
Calling For Rain[]
(At the end of the day, Nyx meets up with Libertus, Crowe, Pelna, and Luche at a bar in Insomnia. Libertus's leg is in a cast, and he has crutches to accompany it.)
Libertus: Hey! Rough day on the gate, huh, Glaive?
Crowe: You jerk! It's your fault he got stuck there!
(Crowe punches Libertus's cast as she stands up from their table, and Libertus cries out in pain.)
Nyx: Not a very nice welcome for a big hero.
Crowe: Not a very nice outfit for one, either.
Nyx: I think it brings out my eyes.
(Pelna stands up from the table to get drinks, and Luche stands to let Nyx get around the table. Libertus is eating a Semur Skewer.)
Libertus: Ugh! What'd you put in this? Tastes like a chocobo turd.
Yamachang: Hey, shut your trap! This ain't Galahd. That's the way folks around here like it.
Libertus: Oh, well, I'm glad to see you're willing to sell out our heritage for a few extra gil.
(Nyx moves Libertus's jacket off of the chair he's taking and notices a pill bottle in the pocket. The label reads Olseaurare Tablets.)
Crowe: Hey, Libertus. You thank Nyx for saving your life yet?
Libertus: Oh, come on, Crowe. Nyx and I are too close for that. He helps me, I help him. That's the way it's always been.
Nyx: Looks like you got a little help from something else, huh?
(Libertus snatches his jacket away from Nyx.)
Libertus: I need all I can get.
Pelna: For hearth!
(Pelna hands Nyx a drink, and the rest of the Glaives raise their glasses, save Libertus.)
Glaives: (together) And home.
Pelna: So, Nyx the Gatekeeper. How's the new post treating you?
Nyx: Oh, it's amazing. You guys would love it. The gate watch are real sweethearts.
Pelna: Ha-ha-ha. Yeah, right. We all know they hate us outsiders more than anything. So bored they got nothing better to do.
Nyx: Boredom's not so bad. Means there's peace, at least. I'd fight a hundred more wars for Galahdans to know boredom.
Pelna: Fight all you want. Just don't go dying yet. I still owe you. A lot.
Libertus: Where would the Glaive be without its hero?
Crowe: Can you not talk like this while we're drinking, please? Besides, we just sent the Niffs running with their tails between their legs, right?
Luche: They weren't running from us. No, they were toying with us.
Nyx: Stop being such a buzzkill, Luche. We all know what happened.
Luche: Well, did you know they sent an envoy to the Citadel after that?
Libertus: What for? To offer their surrender?
Luche: More like demand ours.
Nyx: What?
Libertus: "Demand?" My ass!
Luche: No? Think about it. The Empire's got Lucis on its last legs. It's the perfect time to make demands.
(Pelna, Crowe, Libertus, and Nyx digest this in silence.)
The Choice[]
(The next day, in the council chamber of the Citadel.)
Council Member 1: We are losing this war, Your Majesty. Lucis cannot rely on the Kingsglaive alone. Accepting the truce may be our best course of action.
Council Member 2: You speak of matters beyond the New Wall. We have no need of a truce here, so long as it stands. And, if our position worsens, we still have the Old Wall.
Council Member 3: Yes, but this truce will end the fighting altogether. If only we could compromise--
Clarus: Compromise is unwise. We know nothing of Niflheim's true intentions. Do not fool yourselves, The Walls are far from impenetrable.
King Regis: The paths left to us are few. The New Wall draws its power from the throne. I am able to sustain it for some years yet if the kingdom requires it. But the chancellor spoke one truth, if only one. We are old, and the Old Wall...I cannot command the Old Wall with a weakened hand, nor do I have the strength to muster an offensive to turn the tide on this war.
Clarus: Then let the choice be made, Your Majesty. What are we to protect?
Haunted[]
(A flashback of Nyx and another Glaive. The Glaive warps from an upper floor to a wall. Nyx follows, but, before he can throw his kukri, he hears a voice.)
Girl's Voice: (memory) Help, mother!
(Nyx yells as he falls, but he is brought back to the present before he hits the ground. Another Glaive is training in a courtyard in the Citadel, and they throw their weapon at the ground as they fall. They warp to it but immediately start retching even before the magic stops sparkling in the air around them. Beside Nyx, Libertus laughs.)
Libertus: How come you never lose your lunch like that? Just doesn't add up. Here's this ancient art, secret of the royal family and all that.
Crowe: Libertus! Nyx! Come here, guys, you gotta see this.
(The Kingsglaive stand together watching the news on TV screens.)
News Anchor: (on TV) Things were hectic in the capital today as the Lucian government announced full acceptance of what some are criticizing as the unilateral peace terms proposed by Chancellor Izunia of Niflheim. The signing of the truce will see governing power over all Lucian territories transferred to the Empire, with the sole exception of Insomnia. In return, Niflheim guarantees the continued safety of Insomnia and its citizenry, as well as a cessation to all hostilities, bringing a decisive end to this long and bitter war.
Crowe: All that fighting we did. All for nothing.
Captain Drautos: Glaives. Assemble in the briefing room. Now.
(The Kingslgaive stand at attention in the briefing room.)
Captain Drautos: The king has spoken, and you have heard. All lands beyond the Wall are to be relinquished to the Empire.
Luche: Will no regions be spared?
Captain Drautos: None.
Libertus: But your home's out there, too!
Captain Drautos: It is.
Libertus: Why would the king do this?
Captain Drautos: Because it'll end this damn war. Crowe.
Crowe: Sir!
Captain Drautos: Prepare to deploy. You're being sent to infiltrate Tenebrae.
Crowe: Tenebrae, sir?
Captain Drautos: Mission details are classified. Report to my office for briefing in thirty minutes. And, Nyx: you're off the West Gate. You've been reassigned to the castle guard. That is all.
(The captain leaves.)
Libertus: So, this is what you were talking about, Luche?
Luche: You heard the captain. This wasn't our decision to make.
Libertus: Not ours to make? Those are our homes out there! Our people! And you're just gonna go along with this and abandon them?
Luche: If we don't go along with them, the Empire will unleash all hell on Insomnia.
Libertus: We'll unleash it right back at them!
Nyx: Easy, easy. He's not the enemy.
Tredd: Don't you get it? We're nothing to them. Rats, snuck in from beyond the Wall. Sure, they had a use for us when they realized we could work their magic. So they handpicked us out from all the other rats out there and just let us nibble away at His Royal Majesty's precious power. But, as soon as this war's all over, it's back to the sewers for all of us. That means you too, hero. You missing home so much, Libertus, why don't you and Nyx head on back? I'm sure Niflheim will welcome you with open arms.
(Nyx shoves Tredd.)
Nyx: You've got a home out there, too! Or did you forget?
(Tredd pushes Nyx aside and spits at him before leaving. Libertus throws one of his crutches down in frustration.)
Libertus: Ugh! Damn it! I'm not gonna let it end like this!
The Hearts of the People[]
(King Regis, Clarus, and three other members of his court walk the halls of the Citadel.)
Council Member 1: It is said sentiment amongst the people is favorable, Your Majesty. Most all will welcome this peace.
King Regis: If you yourself have not heard their voices, how can you claim to know their hearts?
Council Member 2: What of the mission to Tenebrae, Your Majesty? Is such clandestine action wise? If discovered, it will only serve to provoke the Empire.
Clarus: The Empire remains our enemy until the treaty is signed. So long as we are at war, His Majesty intends to remain one step ahead of them.
Council Member 2: Of course.
Watch Your Back Out There[]
(Crowe sets her watch before picking up a small box with a silver, jewel-laid hairpin inside.)
Nyx: A hairpin? I didn't think you were into that kind of thing.
Crowe: It's not for me, it's a gift for the princess. But keep that quiet, nobody's supposed to know.
(The horn of the Speedy Chocobo Cleaning Services van they are standing next to honks.)
Crowe: Well, that's me.
Nyx: Watch your back out there.
Libertus: I know you're sick of hearing it, but you're like a little--
Crowe: (interrupting) Little sister to you. Yeah, I am sick of hearing it.
Libertus: Just make sure you come back in one piece, all right?
Crowe: Says the guy in two pieces.
(Crowe climbs into the van, which drives away.)
Your Own Good[]
("The Former Territory of Tenebrae" is superimposed over a magitek airship flying towards Fenestala Manor. Inside the manor, a now twenty-four-year-old Lunafreya descends the staircase carrying a suitcase. Maria, her retainer, meets her at the bottom.)
Maria: Lady Lunafreya, I have left the rear gate open.
Lunafreya: Thank you.
Maria: Must you go?
Lunafreya: Yes.
(There is a loud knocking followed by the sound of a door opening.)
Maria: Then go quickly!
(Lunafreya is prevented from leaving by the sudden arrival of a squadron of Niflheim soldiers, led by her brother Ravus.)
Ravus: I do not recall granting you permission to leave your quarters, Lunafreya.
Lunafreya: Ravus...
(Ravus drags Lunafreya back to her room.)
Ravus: You are not to leave this room again until the journey to Lucis. It is for your own good.
Lunafreya: My own good? What is truly going on here? What cause does the Empire have to see me wed to Noctis?
Ravus: They have offered a peace, and your marriage is the olive branch.
Lunafreya: You expect me to believe that?
Ravus: What you believe does not concern me. What does concern me is you sneaking off to go and tell our mother's killer about some plot you've dreamt up.
Lunafreya: You are wrong to hate King Regis. Niflheim killed mother, not him. They murdered her and made you their lapdog.
(Ravus leaves the room, slamming the door behind him.)
Imperial Diplomats[]
(Somewhere outside of Insomnia, Crowe and a motorcycle are dropped off. As her driver leaves, they speak to some unknown person.)
Driver: It's done.
(Before Crowe puts on her helmet, she notices a different van driving towards her. The van pulls up to the curb on her side of the road as she looks at it, puzzled.)
(In his apartment in Insomnia, Nyx is watching TV. A L'il Malbuddy cartoon is playing before he switches channels to the news, which shows Niflheim airships docking in Lucis.)
News Anchor: (on TV) An air of jubilation has swept the city in anticipation of the coming armistice. With only three days remaining until the peace is officially signed into effect, throngs of citizens have taken to the streets to show...
(Nyx looks over at a corkboard full of photos, newspaper clippings, and other memorabilia.)
King Regis: (memory) Lucis needs your strength, young warriors.
Petra: (memory) We don't need any of you immigrants.
Captain Drautos: (memory) Whatever strength you have is on loan from the king. You are nothing without him.
Girl's Voice: (memory) Nyx, help mother!
Young Nyx: (memory) Selena, get down!
News Anchor: (on TV) ...And the waves of Imperial diplomats entering the city.
(The news shows Lady Lunafreya being escorted into Niflheim. In the throne room of the Citadel, King Regis receives similar news from a messenger.)
King Regis: The princess? Are you certain?
Messenger: Yes, Your Majesty. She was amongst the last of the Imperial contingent to enter the city.
(Nyx walks through Insomnia on his way to work. Large display screens show Emperor Aldercapt entering the city. As Nyx crosses the street, a horn honks, and the Star of Lucis pulls up to the curb with Captain Drautos at the wheel.)
Captain Drautos: Get in.
Nyx: I'm reporting to my post now though, sir.
Captain Drautos: New orders. Come on, we've got a princess to pick up.
(Nyx does as he's told, and they navigate city traffic.)
Nyx: Nice ride, sir.
Captain Drautos: It belongs to the prince. We've taken him outside the city.
Nyx: Doesn't he have a wedding to plan, sir?
Captain Drautos: Cut the "sir" crap. The king has a plan of his own. Prince Noctis and Princess Lunafreya are to meet far from Insomnia.
Nyx: What's she doing here, then?
Captain Drautos: Complicating things. We sent Crowe to find the princess and escort her out of Tenebrae. We're still trying to figure out what went wrong.
(They slow almost to a stop when confronted with a crowd of protestors picketing along the main road. The Crownsguard part them to allow Nyx and the captain through.)
Captain Drautos: So, I know what you think about this war, but what do you think about this peace? You happy giving up your home?
Nyx: It's the king's decision. I owe him for taking me in. I was lucky. There are people in Galahd who weren't. And they need me.
Captain Drautos: So you're going back? What good will you be without the king's magic? Yeah, always wanting to save somebody. I get it, believe me. But it doesn't win wars.
Nyx: It's not just wanting. It's not just me. Libertus is the one you need to worry about. He'll go back if things get worse.
Captain Drautos: The worst is yet to come.
(A car has been stopped outside the Citadel. Lunafreya's escort, an Ambassador of Niflheim, is arguing with the Crownsguard that stopped them.)
Ambassador: Do you have any idea who you're stopping? Open this gate now, and maybe you'll have a job tomorrow.
Petra: King's orders.
Ambassador: Are you sure you want to risk a diplomatic issue now, of all times? I am the personal escort of Lady Lunafreya Nox Fleuret, Princess of the former Tenebrae and the Or--
Captain Drautos: (interrupting) And our kingdom's beloved bride-to-be. Welcome to sovereign jurisdiction, Ambassador. We'll take care of things from here.
Ambassador: Forgive me, Captain Drautos.
Captain Drautos: (crosstalk, to Nyx) See Her Highness to the castle.
Ambassador: (crosstalk) I had no idea that you-- I wasn't made aware of any--
(Nyx opens the driver-side door and has the driver step out so that he can take their place at the wheel.)
Nyx: Excuse me. Thank you.
Ambassador: (crosstalk) No, you-- I must-- I must-- no, I have to clear it with my superiors first.
Nyx: (to Lunafreya) Your Highness.
Ambassador: Uh...
(The ambassador takes out his phone as Nyx drives away with Lady Lunafreya.)
LUNA[]
(In the Citadel, King Regis stands beside the throne.)
Messenger: Her Royal Highness, Princess Lunafreya of Tenebrae.
(When Lunafreya comes in, Nyx is posted at the door.)
Lunafreya: It has been a long time, Your Majesty.
King Regis: Yes. Far too long.
Lunafreya: Prince Noctis isn't here, is he?
King Regis: No, my dear. He is not. I am too old to fight this war. I have no choice but to receive the Empire and accept their treaty. Even so...I had hoped to hold the wedding elsewhere, somewhere safe. I sent one of my Glaive to see you there, but--
(When King Regis trails off, Lunafreya shakes her head.)
King Regis: It is not too late. I can ready an escort. Please, go to my son.
Lunafreya: No. Wherever I go, the Empire will follow. It would only place the prince in greater danger. It is my duty to protect the prince and see his destiny fulfilled. These twelve years have not changed that.
King Regis: And what of your destiny?
Lunafreya: My duty is my destiny, Your Majesty. I'm prepared to accept whatever may come to pass.
The Worst Is Yet To Come[]
(In the Lucian outskirts, a Nilfheim airship flies over a ruined building that two men are picking through.)
Man 1: So, what do you think? All these lands will be imperial soon. Reckon things will get better when them Niffs start calling the shots?
Man 2: Not one damn bit. Don't matter who's calling the shots: as long as they're calling them from behind the Wall, ain't nothing gonna change around here.
(There is a motorcycle in the rubble.)
Man 2: (off-screen) Get over here!
Man 1: Alright...
(The two men look at something that is buzzing with flies. All at once, the insects disperse, revealing an arm poking out of the rubble.)
Man 2: That's a hand!
Symbol of the Peace[]
(Nyx walks the halls of the Citadel until he runs into the captain.)
Captain Drautos: I trust the reunion was a happy one?
Nyx: Has she been a hostage of Niflheim all this time?
Captain Drautos: She's a symbol of the peace, that's all I'm told.
Nyx: Doesn't sound like it. Sounds like she's here for something much bigger than that.
Captain Drautos: Your orders are to protect her.
(The captain's phone rings, and he continues talking to Nyx before answering it.)
Captain Drautos: Not to look, not to listen, not to think. Understood? (answering) Drautos. Yes, report.
(What is being said to him causes Captian Drautos to look at Nyx in consternation.)
In the Line of Duty[]
(Nyx runs through a different hallway towards the sound of Libertus's voice.)
Libertus: Get the hell out of my way! That's my friend you got in there, damn it!
Medic: Sir, you can't go in until the examination has ended.
Libertus: What examination? What the hell's going on?
Nyx: Hey! Hey, take it easy, big guy.
Libertus: These bastards rushed Crowe in there the moment she got back. And now they won't let me in to see her.
(Nyx doesn't respond, but his expression causes Libertus to rush towards the room where Crowe is.)
Medic: Wait!
(Libertus enters the room. Inside is an examination table with a body bag on it. The top is unzipped, revealing Crowe's tear-stained face. Libertus drops his crutches as he goes over to her, and he cries when he sees that she is dead.)
She Deserved Better[]
(Later, Libertus and Nyx sit on a wall overlooking a courtyard of the Citadel. Captain Drautos brings them a box.)
Captain Drautos: Crowe's personal effects. Do with them as you see fit.
Libertus: So, what kind of mission did you really send her on? No Glaive winds up dead on a standard escort.
Captain Drautos: I'll see the armistice does not interfere with a full investigation. She was a good soldier, her death will not go unanswered.
(The captain leaves.)
Libertus: What a life, huh? She was brought up an orphan. Run out of her village. I still remember the first time I saw her. Scrawny little thing, all covered in dirt. Not a friend in the world. But those eyes...damn. There was something about those eyes. She deserved better. And I would've done anything to give it to--
(Libertus tears the Kingsglaive badge off of the shoulder of his uniform and throws it on the ground. He climbs painfully to his feet.)
Nyx: Libertus, wait. Crowe died a Glaive. You can still honor her by fighting as one.
Libertus: You're dumber than me sometimes, you know that? Don't you get it? Lucis killed Crowe. Go back to the castle! Tell the king there's no peace to be had from throwing the weak to the wolves. I'll fight my own fight from here on out. See you around, hero.
(Libertus leaves. Three Glaives are eavesdropping - Tredd, Axis Arra, and Sonitus Bellum - and they leave to follow Libertus.)
Memories[]
(It is a rainy night in Insomnia. In his apartment, Nyx goes through the box of Crowe's things. Inside are her phone, her watch, and the hairpin she took with her when she left Insomnia.)
Nyx: (memory) A hairpin? I didn't think you were into that kind of thing.
Crowe: (memory) It's not for me. It's a gift for the princess.
Somnus[]
("Eve of the signing ceremony." Fireworks fill the sky above the Citadel as a party takes place on the rooftop. There is an enormous decorative aquarium on the topmost level where Nyx is posted on guard duty. Emperor Aldercapt comes up the stairs to meet with King Regis.)
Emperor Aldercapt: A most grand reception, King Regis. You honor all of Niflheim.
King Regis: Oh, the honor is ours, Emperor Aldercapt. You have ventured far to grace us with your presence.
Emperor Aldercapt: It was the very least I could do. Tomorrow will be an historic day for both our nations. And your Insomnia is truly a marvel. My own cities pale in comparison. I pray we are able to take away much...from this visit.
(Ardyn Izunia, the Niflheim Chancellor, stands off to the side, and he raises his champagne glass as if to toast. Lunafreya approaches Nyx.)
Lunafreya: Hello. I'm afraid we were never properly introduced yesterday.
Nyx: I'm afraid it's going to have to wait, Your Highness. I'm on guard duty.
Lunafreya: Then surely there's no safer place for me to be. May I ask your name?
Nyx: Uh, Nyx. Nyx Ulric.
Lunafreya: There is something else I wish to ask you, Nyx Ulric. King Regis said he sent one of your order to come find me. I should like to offer my thanks in person. Where might I find this brave soldier?
(Nyx doesn't respond, but his expression tells her everything she needs to know.)
Lunafreya: Oh. Oh, I did not--I am so sorry.
Nyx: Don't be.
(Nyx takes the hairpin out of his pocket and offers it to Lunafreya.)
Nyx: Here. She was carrying this. It was meant for you.
Lunafreya: For me?
Nyx: Keep it. She would've wanted you to have it.
Lunafreya: I will carry it with me always. Thank you.
Simmering Unrest[]
(Somewhere in Insomnia, Libertus stalks through an abandoned arcade. He pauses to take a couple of the pills he was carrying earlier while he listens to a man speak in the next room.)
Pruvia: Do you have any idea what this peace means? It means our homes are gone. All of them. Forever.
Libertus: Heard I could find some treaty haters here. I come to the right place?
Pruvia: You certainly have. Everyone say hello to a man who spends his days in the loyal service of our good king.
Libertus: "Spent." Those days are over. I'm done listening to that bastard's lies. He may sit on a throne, but he ain't no king, least not of mine.
Pruvia: Well, then. Welcome to the resistance, brother. I hope you're here to talk.
Libertus: What do you wanna know?
(Back on the rooftop of Insomnia, Lunafreya looks up at the moon as she prays aloud. The magic of the Wall shimmers in the sky like starlight.)
Lunafreya: Please, wherever Noctis is, keep him safe. That's all I ask.
(General Glauca appears.)
General Glauca: To what god do you pray? You, the slave of fate and destiny. Abandon your prayers - the gods do not listen.
Lunafreya: General Glauca. Why are you here?
General Glauca: You are far too clever to have ever believed in this peace. Pity you couldn't see your beloved Noctis. You have another purpose.
Lunafreya: I'm not here for Niflheim.
General Glauca: No. You are here for me.
Lunafreya: You? I do not understand.
General Glauca: Come tomorrow, you will.
Missing Princess[]
(Day of the signing ceremony. In his apartment, Nyx gets ready to go. He notices the numbers on Crowe's watch rapidly changing but makes no further note of it. He leaves the watch on his desk when he leaves.)
(Nyx waits outside of the Citadel as orders are given over an intercom.)
Man: (over intercom) Niflheim contingent has left the hotel. Less than three hours until the ceremony. Bolster the Citadel guard.
Pelna: (over radio) Nyx, is the princess with you?
Nyx: No, I'm on duty at the Citadel.
Pelna: (over radio) Well, the Niffs just left for the ceremony, and she wasn't with them.
(Nyx thinks the situation over before a realization dawns. He runs through the streets of Insomnia and back to his apartment where he grabs Crowe's watch.)
Pelna: (over radio) A homing beacon?
Nyx: Yeah, I'll send the coordinates now. Can you pinpoint a location for me?
Pelna: (over radio) Sure, but it sounds like a wild-goose chase. Guess you got some free time on your hands, huh?
Nyx: Guess I do, for better or worse.
(Nyx makes his way towards the Citadel where the Crownsguard are being assembled.)
Pelna: (over radio) Those coordinates are about twenty miles south of Insomnia.
Nyx: Outside the Wall.
Pelna: (over radio) What the hell was Crowe doing all the way out there?
Nyx: No, no. They sent her to-- I need another favor, Pelna. Pull those coordinates up on the radar and let me know what you find.
Pelna: (over radio) On it. You're thinking this is all a big deal now, huh?
Nyx: Yeah, too big to ignore.
(Nyx doesn't slow down as he approaches the Citadel's front gate, and he pushes past the Crownsguard posted there.)
Guard 1: (cross-talk) Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! Excuse me, sir. Excuse me!
Guard 2: (cross-talk) Hey, hey, hey!
Guard 3: (cross-talk) Whoa, wait a minute! Stop right there!
Guard 4: (cross-talk) Hey!
(Nyx passes Petra speaking two a brigade of Crownsguard.)
Petra: Listen up. This is not the gate watch. This is the heart of our city, the home of our king. The ceremony must not be disturbed. Neutralize any threat quickly and quietly. Is that understood?
Crownsguard: (together) Yes, sir!
(Nyx proceeds to the Citadel as the Niflheim contingent arrives. King Regis looks down from on high as Emperor Aldercapt and Chancellor Izunia enter the Citadel.)
(Nyx speaks into his earpiece as he navigates the halls of the castle.)
Nyx: Glaive to command. Are you there, captain? Urgent. Damn it, Drautos!
Pelna: (over radio) Jackpot, Nyx. There's a whole fleet of airships sitting at that spot.
Nyx: Niflheim.
Pelna: (over radio) Yup, and, from the looks of it, I'd say they're headed to war.
Nyx: Where's the captain?
Pelna: (over radio) Should be at the Citadel.
Nyx: There's no answer on his frequency.
Pelna: (over radio) I don't know, must have his hands full with the escort detail.
Nyx: Pelna, one last favor. I need you to prep the Glaive for action.
Pelna: (over radio) What- what are you talking about? You wanna deploy without the captain's order?
Nyx: Trust me. Just get it done.
Pelna: (over radio) Wait, what am I supposed to tell--?
Crownsguard: Stand down, Glaive.
(Nyx pushes past the Crownsguard posted outside of the hall to the throne room.)
Clarus: The ceremony is in less than two hours. We must make ready.
King Regis: Very well.
Messenger: Your Majesty. A man of the Kingsglaive is here, sire. He demands an audience.
King Regis: "Demands?"
(Nyx bursts into the throne room.)
Nyx: Your Majesty, please.
Crownsguard: Halt.
Nyx: Give the order to deploy the Glaive.
King Regis: You...
Nyx: A Niflheim fleet makes ready for war twenty miles to the south.
Clarus: An imperial fleet.
Nyx: And they have the princess.
King Regis: Clarus, post guards outside the treaty room.
Clarus: It will be seen as a lack of faith in the peace.
King Regis: Which we all harbor. See it done. We may well have to take Emperor Aldercapt into custody.
Clarus: Detain him? That would go beyond a new declaration of war.
King Regis: We are still at war, Clarus. And you, Nyx Ulric. How soon can the Kingsglaive deploy?
Nyx: On your word, at once.
King Regis: Go, then! Save Luna.
Suit Up, Glaives[]
(In the debriefing room, the Kingsglaive get ready to deploy.)
Glaive: What if this is a diversion?
Nyx: Not likely. Tenebrae's princess is on board. We've got two jobs: save her, and stop those Niff ships from flying on Insomnia.
Luche: We go in teams. Standard infiltrate and extract. Nyx, you command. We'll follow. The Glaive stands together, captain or no. For hearth.
Kingsglaive: (together) And home!
Glaive Infiltration[]
(At the Citadel, King Regis and Clarus head to the treaty room. A crowd is gathered outside of the castle.)
News Anchor: (on TV) We are less than twenty minutes away from the signing of this historic treaty.
(Twenty miles south of Insomnia, the Kingsglaive reach the extraction point.)
Captain Drautos: (over radio) I received word of the king's order to deploy. I'll see to matters in the city. You have your mission, and it won't be easy. The objective is two-fold: secure the hostage, and stay the enemy advance. Just be careful. One Glaive already died for this princess. Niflheim won't give her up easily.
(At Nyx's signal, the first team of Glaives warps onto the Niflheim ships.)
Nyx: (over radio) Team two.
(The second team moves in to warp, but the ships start to take off, and the Glaives struggle to hang on.)
Pelna: (over radio) Oh, man. Hurry up, Nyx!
(Nyx runs to catch up and throws his kukri to warp towards the moving ship. Between warps, he hears his sister's voice.)
Selena: (memory) Help!
(Nyx manages to regain his composure and warps several times to latch onto the ship.)
Pelna: Over here!
Nyx: (into earpiece) Preparing to head below deck.
Captain Drautos: (over radio) Do not engage the enemy until instructed. The ceremony is underway. Let's wait and see how Niflheim plays this.
(In Insomnia, Emperor Aldercapt and his retinue wait for King Regis in the treaty room. One of the Emperor's men approach him to whisper in his ear.)
Man: The Kingsglaive have infiltrated the ships, so everything's going according to plan.
(Back on the Niflheim airships, the Kingsglaive continue their infiltration.)
Nyx: Ulric reporting. Six Niflheim airships confirmed inbound for Insomnia.
Pelna: (into earpiece) Nyx, this doesn't feel like a war fleet.
(Pelna proceeds alone below deck.)
Pelna: (into earpiece) I think I might've found her. I got a guarded door here. Two Niff MTs. What's the plan?
Nyx: (into earpiece) Hold position. (to Drautos) Arrived at destination. High possibility of target in the vicinity.
Captain Drautos: (over radio) Proceed to secure.
Nyx: (into earpiece) It's going to mean a fight.
Captain Drautos: (over radio) Keep it quiet and keep it confined.
Nyx: (into earpiece) Pelna, you're clear to engage, but keep it quiet. I'm on my way.
Treaty Signing[]
(In Insomnia, King Regis takes his seat next to Emperor Aldercapt)
King Regis: Forgive my delay. A bit of unforeseen trouble.
Emperor Aldercapt: Nothing too vexing, I hope.
King Regis: A simple theft, nothing more.
Emperor Aldercapt: A daring thief, to steal from the king. Perhaps magical walls and castle gates do not keep all things safe.
King Regis: Perhaps. But no matter. That which was taken will soon be returned.
Emperor Aldercapt: Impressive. You are a paragon of kingly composure. But I must ask: how can you be so sure?
King Regis: Because this thing is no mere trinket. It possesses a will all its own. Enough to break any thief's grasp.
Emperor Aldercapt: Hm. That sounds a very fine prize indeed...
(On the Niflheim airship, Pelna takes out the two MTs guarding Lunafreya's cell. The effects of using magic catch up to him, and he coughs.)
Pelna: Not now, damn it.
(Pelna takes a keycard from one of the MTs.)
Pelna: For me? Aw, you shouldn't have. (into earpiece) Target confirmed. She's unharmed.
(Pelna unlocks the cell door.)
(In Insomnia, Clarus kneels beside King Regis to whisper in his ear.)
Clarus: The Glaives have recovered the princess, Your Majesty.
Emperor Aldercapt: Have you found your thief?
King Regis: We have. And what was stolen remains intact.
Emperor Aldercapt: Joyous news. I am relieved to hear it.
King Regis: Tell me, how heavy a sentence does the crime of theft carry in your Empire?
Emperor Aldercapt: Among the heaviest. Although there is one exception.
(On the Niflheim airship, Luche watches MT reinforcements arrive.)
Luche: Things are about to get ugly over here.
(Realization dawns on Nyx, and he starts running.)
Nyx: Pelna, get out of there! It's a trap!
(In Insomnia, King Regis and Emperor Aldercapt continue their conversation as they await the presentation of the treaty.)
King Regis: What is that?
Emperor Aldercapt: A curious old law I still permit in the outlands: a thief who escapes his captor can no longer be held to account for his crime.
King Regis: A warning to the victim? "Never show weakness, lest you forgo the hand of justice."
Emperor Aldercapt: Oh, no, good king. Far from it.
News Anchor: (on TV) The treaty is now on the table. The countdown begins to this historical moment.
Emperor Aldercapt: It is a warning to the hand of justice itself never to loose its grip.
(There is an explosion in front of the Citadel. Emperor Aldercapt draws a gun from his vest, and King Regis summons his Armiger as both Niflheim and Lucian parties face-off.)
(Outside of the Crystal Chamber, Petra gives orders to the Crownsguard over comms.)
Petra: Unit one, secure the perimeter. Unit two, stand your ground!
(On the Niflheim airship, Pelna is escorting Lady Lunafreya away from her cell when Nyx catches up with them.)
Nyx: Pelna!
Pelna: One Tenebrae princess, safe and--
(A large, octopus-like arm snakes down the hallway behind Pelna. It picks him up and slams him repeatedly into the wall, killing him. Nyx pulls Lunafreya away.)
Nyx: Come on!
(Chaos is breaking loose in Insomnia as MTs storm the Crystal Chamber. The Crownsguard attempt to fend them off.)
Petra: The Crystal! They're after the Crystal!
Treachery[]
(On the Niflheim airship, two Glaives are still attempting to infiltrate. The one on point stops to listen to something being said into their earpiece.)
Glaive: There's something going on below deck. The ship's not going to make it to Insom--
(The Glaive is stabbed by the Glaive behind them. The Glaive falls to the ground. When they look back over their shoulder, Sonitus, the Glaive who stabbed them, removes his hood.)
Glaive: You...
(Elsewhere on the ship, Nyx and Lunafreya are running from the advancing Ultros.)
Nyx: What's going on?
Captain Drautos: (over radio) Insomnia is under attack.
Nyx: Who brought you here?
Lunafreya: General Glauca.
Nyx: You were bait. Us coming here was all part of their plan.
(In the Crystal Chamber in Insomnia, the Niflheim forces subdue the Crownsguard. They enter the Chamber and lay down explosives.)
(Nyx continues talking over comms to Captain Drautos.)
Nyx: Target secured. Request permission to withdraw.
Captain Drautos: (over radio) Granted. Get to--
(At that moment, the explosives in the Chamber detonate. This disrupts the adamantite conduits that allow the Crystal to maintain the New Wall, and the Wall shatters.)
(In the treaty room, the two parties still hold their weapons at the ready.)
King Regis: The Crystal will not serve you.
Emperor Aldercapt: Nor you once I take it from this accursed city.
Ravus: (to himself) It's not the Crystal I'm here for.
(On the Niflheim airship, Nyx and Lunafreya pause to look out a window.)
Lunafreya: The Wall. It's gone.
(Two Glaives approach them head-on while another is coming up from behind.)
Nyx: Fall back, it's a trap!
(The third Glaive attacks Nyx, but he dispatches them.)
Nyx: What the hell is going on?
(On the airship flying adjacent to theirs, the Glaive that Sonitus stabbed has limped their way to one of the engine rooms where Glaives are fighting amongst themselves.)
Glaive 1: Traitors...
(On Nyx's ship, one of the two other Glaives is surprised by the attack on Nyx.)
Glaive 2: What's got into you?
(The other Glaive that they came in with stabs them in the back before running to attack Nyx.)
(On the adjacent airship, the wounded Glaive uses the last of their strength to cast Fire magic into the engine, exploding it. As the ship falls from the sky, it knocks into adjacent ships, including the one that Nyx and Lunafreya are on. The two of them run, leap, and tumble for their lives until the traitor Glaive from before catches up with them. They jump at Nyx, and the two of them fall until Ultros plucks the Glaive out of the air. Then, it grabs Lunafreya.)
(With the Wall gone, the Niflheim fleet descends upon Insomnia. MTs are dropped onto the Citadel and land in the treaty room where they open fire on the Lucians. King Regis casts a magical shield, but, with the Crystal effectively in hand, the Niflheim party simply leaves.)
(On the now free-falling airship, Nyx faces off against Ultros. Some well-placed Fire magic causes Ultros to let go of Lunafreya, and Nyx warps after her.)
Escape Is No Longer An Option[]
(In the treaty room, King Regis dispatches the remaining MTs with Lightning magic. The magical shields are dropped.)
Clarus: Come, we must escape while we can.
King Regis: No, Clarus. I fear escape is no longer an option.
(General Glauca enters the treaty room through the window that was broken by the air-dropped MTs.)
King Regis: General Glauca.
(On the falling airship, Nyx and Lunafreya dangle from a broken railing.
Nyx: Can you make it up? Can you stand?
(Nyx pulls Lunafreya up. Ultros drops onto them, and Nyx casts his own shield as they are battered down. Another Niflheim airship flies adjacent to them. When the side door of the ship opens, Luche is standing there. He looks at the scene in disbelief.)
Nyx: Luche!
(Ultros takes the opportunity to knock Luche away. When in contact with sunlight, however, Ultros begins to burn in the manner that all daemons burn. Seeing an opening, Lunafreya climbs towards the adjacent ship.)
Nyx: What are you doing? You gotta be kidding me.
(Lunafreya leaps onto the platform that Luche had been standing on, and Nyx must warp in order to follow. By the time he catches up, Lunafreya is in the pilot seat of a smaller assault craft housed in the ship.)
Nyx: They teach piloting back at the royal academy? Give me that.
(He takes the controls, and Ultros latches onto their ship.)
(In the treaty room, King Regis's council members take up a fighting stance before their king.)
Clarus: It's been a long time since I fought at your side, old friend.
King Regis: Yes, but this time it is not your fight. If you wish to leave, go now.
Clarus: And abandon my king? I think not. Besides, our magic is bound to you. If you fall, Lucis falls.
King Regis: Then let us once more into the fray, old friend.
(General Glauca lunges and clears through the council members with a single swipe of his blade.)
(Meanwhile, Nyx is piloting the falling assault craft as it plummets towards the city. He maneuvers the craft in order to skewer Ultros on the spire of a skyscraper.)
Lunafreya: You must take me back to King Regis.
Nyx: Are you out of your mind? Insomnia's a war zone.
Lunafreya: I have a duty. I cannot neglect it.
Nyx: Yeah, I heard all that before.
Lunafreya: Then you know we must hurry.
Nyx: Hurry to do what? Get yourself killed?
Lunafreya: I do not fear death.
Nyx: Oh, enough with all this brave princess act! Just pray this thing will make the trip.
(In the treaty room, Clarus faces off against General Glauca. Even with King Regis casting Lightning and using the Armiger, they are sorely outmatched. General Glauca kills Clarus.)
King Regis: Clarus!
(On another Niflheim ship, Emperor Aldercapt and Chancellor Izunia are overseeing the extraction of the Crystal from the rubble of its former chamber.)
Chancellor Izunia: Well, I daresay everything has proceeded according to plan. No?
Emperor Aldercapt: So it has. We have broken the Wall. All that remains is to break the city.
Chancellor Izunia: Shall we take our leave, then? The sun will soon set. We need not be here to witness the terrors of the night.
(Nyx and Lunafreya arrive in time to watch them leave with the Crystal.)
Lunafreya: The Crystal. (to Nyx) You're going too fast. We have to land.
Nyx: Yeah, you're gonna have to give me a minute on that.
Lunafreya: There is no time. I will go on my own.
Nyx: What? You got wings underneath that dress? You can't use magic.
Lunafreya: Not all miracles are made by magic. I do not fear death. What I fear is doing nothing and losing everything.
(Seeing an opening, Lunafreya leaps from the aircraft towards the balcony of a nearby building.)
Nyx: Oh, come on!
(Nyx jumps and warps after her, allowing them to land safely.)
Nyx: You can thank magic for that miracle, Your Highness.
The Ring of the Lucii[]
(Outside of the Citadel, Niflheim ships are unleashing troops on the citizens of Insomnia. Pruvia, the man leading the resistance group that Libertus had joined earlier, walks amidst the crowd.)
Pruvia: The reckoning is at hand. Dawn of a new age.
(Pruvia is shot by one of the Niflheim soldiers.)
(Inside the Citadel, King Regis is still defending against General Glauca.)
King Regis: You have the Crystal. What more would you take from me?
(General Glauca batters King Regis's shield, shattering it. Yanking the king aside, General Glauca cuts the Ring from King Regis's hand. The Ring rolls across the ground before stopping at the feet of Ravus. He picks it up.)
Ravus: The Ring of the Lucii. I lost my mother, my country, my birthright. Niflheim was the only life left to me. But all of that was for this. The Ring belongs to me now.
(General Glauca lunges at Ravus, but, as soon as the Ring is on Ravus's finger, the world around him slows to a stop.)
Ravus: Hear me, Lucian kings of old, for I am Ravus Nox Fleuret, and none is more worthy of your power than I!
(The chamber around him dims until there is naught but blue and purple pulsing lights amid the shadows.)
Ravus: No. Why? Why do you refuse me?
(Magical fire consumes his left arm and the Ring drops from his burning finger. It rolls back towards King Regis, who picks it up at once. Thwarted once, General Glauca prepares another blow.)
Lunafreya: Look out!
(Lunafreya runs to King Regis, and Nyx throws his kukri at General Glauca. Glauca deflects the kukri and Nyx's subsequent warp. While Lunafreya helps King Regis escape, Nyx continues attacking General Glauca. King Regis opens a secret elevator and ushers Lunafreya inside before turning back to Nyx.)
King Regis: Quickly, through here.
(King Regis casts Lightning on General Glauca long enough to allow Nyx to warp into the passageway. The door closes, leaving General Glauca outside. Lunafreya tears a piece of her dress to wrap the king's wounded hand.)
King Regis: This leads to a hidden passageway. Follow it. Once you are away, make for Altissia. Noctis awaits you there.
Lunafreya: Your Majesty.
Nyx: You knew this was coming--
Lunafreya: Yes. But it was the only way to draw their wrath from Noctis.
Nyx: Is that the way of our king? Sacrifice Lucian sons to save his own?
Lunafreya: To save the world.
King Regis: See Luna safely to Altissia. This is not an order from a king to his Glaive. This is a plea from one man to another. Please, Nyx Ulric, keep her safe. For the future of all.
Nyx: The future?
(A crash issues from above them. King Regis holds the Ring of the Lucii out to Lunafreya.)
King Regis: Here, take this. It is time it passed to another's keeping.
(Lunafreya reluctantly takes the Ring, and the elevator comes to a stop.)
Our Hope Goes With You[]
(The three of them get out, and Lunafreya leads King Regis by the hand just as he did for her twelve years prior. And, just as she did then, he lets go of her hand.)
Lunafreya: No, please. Stop!
(King Regis summons his magical shield to separate himself from Lunafreya and Nyx.)
Nyx: Get back!
Lunafreya: Please, don't leave us!
King Regis: I know your mother would wish the same as me. That you and Noctis live happily. All those years captive because I failed you. Not again. Locked doors will seal your fate no longer.
Lunafreya: King Regis...
(Behind King Regis, the elevator shudders.)
King Regis: Our hope goes with you now, Nyx Ulric. Godspeed.
(King Regis turns to face General Glauca, who has battered his way down the elevator shaft. General Glauca salutes King Regis and bows before advancing on him. King Regis casts Lightning against him, but still, Glauca persists.)
General Glauca: Behold, the king of Lucis, who hoarded tranquility within his precious Walls. Where is your tranquility now, king? Here is your peace, by steel's swift descent.
(Lunafreya runs back towards the shield. General Glauca stabs King Regis.)
King Regis: Go...
(He dies. Nyx grabs one of his kukris, but Lunafreya stops him.)
Lunafreya: No! We must get away from here. It is what your king wanted.
(Reluctantly, Nyx allows himself to be pulled away. General Glauca stands over the body of King Regis.)
No Turning Back[]
(Nyx and Lunafreya run through the Citadel until they come to a parking garage. The Star of Lucis is parked there. Before climbing into the passenger seat, Lunafreya gazes at an enormous, humanoid statue crouching above the exit. Nyx takes the wheel.)
General Glauca: (over radio, as narration) Lady Lunafreya has escaped with the Ring. Find her at once. She is not to leave the city.
Nyx: (into earpiece) Ulric to command. Come in, captain.
(There is a small screen embedded in the Star of Lucis's dash, and it is playing a news channel.)
News Anchor: (on TV) Footage of the perpetrators was captured by a nearby surveillance camera. Here are images of the six suspects. One has been identified as Galahdian refugee, Libertus Ostium, a former member of the Lucian Kingsglaive.
(At the Citadel, Libertus locates the fatally wounded Pruvia.)
Libertus: Hey, come here. Come here. I got you, I got you. You're all right. You're okay.
Pruvia: It's fine. We're free. We're free now.
Libertus: We're free? What do you mean, "we're free?"
Pruvia: The Empire. They promised. This district is ours. All the refugees. It's our new home.
Libertus: The Empire? You went in with Niflheim?
(Pruvia hands Libertus a walkie-talkie.)
Pruvia: Here. Take this. Meet up with the others. You're the hero of our revolution, brother.
(Pruvia dies.)
(Back on the road, Nyx slams his hand on the steering wheel in frustration.)
Nyx: Damn it!
(Gunfire hits the side of the car. A Niflheim assault craft is flying parallel to the highway. The traitor Glaives, Tredd, Axis, and Sonitus are onboard.)
Tredd: This guy just doesn't know when he's beat.
Nyx: Can you drive?
Lunafreya: I can try.
(Giving Lunafreya the wheel, Nyx climbs into the back of the car and opens the door.)
Nyx: I'll be right back!
(Nyx throws his kukri at the assault craft but is unable to warp to it. Tredd pulls it out of the wall where it landed.)
Tredd: No warping for you this time, hero.
(The craft continues firing on the car, and Nyx climbs back into the front.)
Nyx: Give me the wheel. Go!
Lunafreya: You are without your magic.
Nyx: You noticed that, huh? It must have died with the king.
(An armored vehicle drives up behind them.)
Petra: (over intercom) You're making a mess of my city, Glaive. I thought I told you not to go playing hero. Leave the ship to me. Looks like you got a royal fare to see to.
(Petra fires his gun at the Glaives on the assault craft, and Nyx and Lunafreya make a getaway. A second assault craft lands on the highway and unloads a magitek armor. Nyx drives the car off of the road to avoid its fire. The car ends up on its back, and Nyx and Lunafreya struggle to get out of it as it teeters on the edge of a rooftop.)
Nyx: Move it!
(Lunafreya manages to climb out, but she is corned by the pursuing magitek armor. Nyx remains at the wheel as the car falls into the space between two buildings. He manages to jump out of the car and through a window into one of the buildings.)
Nyx: Maybe not all miracles are made by magic.
(Lunafreya is wounded while being pursued by magitek armors. Nyx catches up with her, but a second assault craft descends and fires at him.)
Nyx: Oh, great.
(Nyx and Lunafreya run for the door leading down from the roof and escape inside.)
Nyx: What the hell did you do to piss these things off?
Lunafreya: It's not me they're after. It's the Ring.
Nyx: What's so special about this Ring? Don't tell me the future's really riding on it.
Lunafreya: He who wears the Ring communes with the Lucii and commands great power.
Nyx: What kind of power?
Lunafreya: A forbidden one. Sealed within the Ring long ago.
Nyx: The Old Wall. I thought that was just a bedtime story.
(There is a monstrous sound outside.)
Lunafreya: I can assure you it is not. But the Lucii grant their power only to those they deem worthy.
Nyx: So, that guy who tried it on back there, I guess he wasn't deemed worthy.
Lunafreya: That was my brother. These twelve years have changed Ravus. He is bound by the past and lost in his lust for power.
(Two Ahrimans fly into the building.)
Nyx: How the hell did they find us?
(They attack Nyx, who fends them off. He notices metallic nodes affixed to one of the Ahriman's carapaces.)
Nyx: Your hairpin, they're tracking it. Give it to me.
(Lunafreya gives him the hairpin, and he talks as he examines it.)
Nyx: I had a little sister once. She was killed when the Empire came. I couldn't save her. I was as helpless then as I am now. I couldn't show her the future she wanted.
(Nyx locates the tracking device inside the hairpin and takes it out.)
Lunafreya: True power is not something that is found by those who seek it. It is something that comes to those who deserve it. Your sister wanted you to see a future as well. Anyone would wish the same for family they love.
Nyx: You don't pull any punches, do you?
(The Ahrimans swarm the building. Nyx takes the tracking device and leads the swarm away from Lunafreya.)
Nyx: I'm over here!
(The magitek armor chases Nyx, too.)
Captain Drautos: (over radio) Do you hear me? Repeat, this is Drautos. Can you hear me? Over.
Nyx: Your timing's impeccable, captain. If the Lucii are real, they sure don't seem to mind their city getting torn apart.
Captain Drautos: (over radio) You're to rendezvous and regroup. Understood?
Nyx: That might not be so easy, captain. My wings have been clipped, in case you didn't know.
(Nyx leads the Ahrimans towards the main assault craft. He drops the tracking device, allowing Lunafreya to throw it towards the assault craft's engine. The Ahrimans follow the device into the engine, exploding the craft.)
Captain Drautos: (over radio) Ulric. Are you all right?
Nyx: I'm not dead, if that's what you mean, sir.
Captain Drautos: (over radio) Head for Section D as soon as you can. I'll have an evacuation team ready.
Nyx: Don't suppose you could meet me at the gate. I'd kind of like to get the hell out of this city.
Captain Drautos: (over radio) Imperials hold all exits, there's no way through. I'll meet you at Section D. Cut all radio contact until then. And make sure you get there.
Nyx: It's a date, sir.
Doubt[]
(Libertus walks the ruined streets of Insomnia. He stumbles across the bodies of Tredd, Axis, and Sonitus.)
Libertus: Ain't no turning back now.
(One of the traitor Glaive's comm is still picking up a frequency, and a conversation can be heard.)
Man 1: (over radio) Status report.
Man 2: (over radio) Ulric killed some good men.
Man 1: (over radio) What about the Ring?
Man 2: (over radio) We don't have it yet.
General Glauca: (over radio) This is Glauca. King Regis is dead. The Ring is on its way to Section D. We must recover the Ring to realize our goal.
(Libertus finds Nyx's lost kukri near the body of one of the Glaives and picks it up.
General Glauca: (over radio) If Ulric or the princess get in the way, take them out. Reclaim our hearth and home.
Libertus: "Hearth and home?"
Man 3: (over walkie-talkie frequency) Libertus, come in. Where are you? Are you all right?
Libertus: I'm fine. On the way back to base now.
Man 3: (over radio) We need you to head to the junction in Section D. We're gonna join up with another unit and make a clean sweep of the place. We're one step away from realizing this revolution. Let's not let Pruvia's death be in vain. We'll be waiting for you, hero.
(Libertus puts his walkie-talkie away and takes out his bottle of pills. After swallowing some, he considers his options.)
Despair[]
(Nyx and Lunafreya cautiously approach Section D.)
Nyx: Don't move until I say it's safe, all right?
Lunafreya: I won't.
(Nyx leaves her in the shelter of a building and walks out into the square.)
Nyx: Ulric, reporting! I have the princess! She's alive and well!
(A shot is fired, striking Nyx. The gunman is revealed to be Luche. He fires a second shot as he walks towards Nyx. Lunafreya runs towards him, too.)
Lunafreya: No!
Nyx: Get out of here!
Luche: You've got some fight in you, Nyx, I'll give you that.
Nyx: Run! Now!
(Nyx lifts his kukri to fend off Luche, but Luche disarms him and kicks him in the stomach.)
Luche: I can't believe you're still moving with that hollow point in you. All Crowe could do was scream when one tore her insides apart.
Nyx: Why'd you do it?
Luche: Because the Kingsglaive is nothing! An old man's battle fodder sent to die in Insomnia's war while our homes are bound and shackled.
Nyx: Niflheim took your home. Took all our homes! Nothing will ever change that.
Luche: You never were too smart. You could've had a new future with the Empire.
(Luche turns away from Nyx and chases after Lunafreya. He follows her up to a landing and corners her.)
Luche: There's nowhere to run, princess. The Ring, give it to me.
(Luche points his gun at Lunafreya. A car pulls into the square with Captain Drautos at the wheel. At gunpoint, Lunafreya relinquishes the Ring.)
Luche: So many dead over so simple a thing. But why? For what?
Lunafreya: Power. Untold power, beyond the control of someone like you.
Luche: Power...
The General's Ambition[]
(Captain Drautos is kneeling next to Nyx when a second car enters the square. The captain stands to face it. Libertus is at the wheel.)
(Up on the landing, the Lucii are burning Luche for the transgression of putting on the Ring. Lunafreya snatches the Ring from his hand before he falls over the railing.)
(In the square, Libertus accelerates, running into Captain Drautos and pinning him beneath the car. The car is sent flying when Captain Drautos, now revealing himself to be General Glauca, throws it off of himself.
Nyx: Captain.
(Libertus struggles to climb out of the car. Lunafreya runs to Nyx's side.)
Libertus: Nyx!
(A Niflheim airship, carrying a Diamond Weapon, flies overhead.)
Drautos/Glauca: It's over. The daemons are unleashed, Lucis is fallen. Surrender the Ring.
(Lunafreya lets go of Nyx's arm to put on the Ring, but Nyx stops her.)
Nyx: Plan on giving those kings a piece of your mind, princess? You got a destiny to take care of here, remember? Besides, didn't anyone tell you? I'm the hero around here.
(Nyx takes the Ring, and General Glauca lunges. Before his sword can find its mark, the world grinds to a halt, the lights go out, and Nyx Ulric enters the chamber of the Lucii.)
Kings of Lucis[]
(The world beyond Nyx's small pool of blue light is cast in shadow. He struggles to lift himself from the ground as he speaks.)
Nyx: Show yourselves, kings of Lucis!
(All around him, enormous figments of the kings of yore appear.)
The Mystic: You call upon the wards of this world's future, mortal. And if you come lusting for our power, you must first stand in our judgment.
Nyx: How long will you do nothing whilst Insomnia burns? Old or New, or whatever it is. Summon your Wall!
Oracle King: You do not command us. Yours is not even royal blood.
The Mystic: It does not fall to us to guard your city. Man is a fool creature, clinging to his past and cowering from his future. Wasting his strength on bygone days.
Nyx: And what future are you wards of?
Oracle King: So short-sighted and cursed never to rise above it.
King Regis: Wait. I have seen what this brave soul is prepared to do. He, too, seeks to safeguard the future.
Nyx: Your Majesty...
The Mystic: Very well, young king. We will weigh your warrior's worth. But our boon does not come cheap. The cost is a life.
(The figments of Libertus and Luna appear before Nyx.)
The Mystic: His...or hers.
Nyx: No. To hell with your power! I'm not here for it. I only came to tell you: you are no kings!
The Mystic: Your worth has been weighed and found wanting. Now burn!
(The blue and purple flames that consumed both Luche and Ravus's arm engulf the hand on which Nyx is wearing the Ring. He cries out in pain before laughing.)
Nyx: You're going to lose your precious Ring! But it's not too late to save it.
The Oracle: You mean to barter for your life?
Nyx: No, no. My life is nothing. Giving a future to those who want to see it...is everything.
The Oracle: Hmm. You do not fear, even if that future is doomed.
The Fierce: If that sentiment is not false, perhaps you are worthy.
The Wise: We will grant you our Light. But know it will set when the sun rises.
The Mystic: And the price for it will be your life.
Nyx: You guys drive a hard bargain. Where do I sign?
(In an instant, Nyx returns to the real world. He casts a shield to deflect Glauca's attack before sending him flying with a Lightning spell. Glauca lies stunned on the ground.)
Nyx: I could get used to this.
(Nyx spits in the direction of his former captain. Libertus limps over to Nyx and Lunafreya.)
Libertus: Nyx...I'm sorry.
Nyx: Don't be. You saved me, now I owe you.
Libertus: For a change.
Nyx: I'm gonna need another favor. Meet Lunafreya Nox Fleuret, our prince's beloved bride-to-be. She has the future of the world in her hands. Keep her safe, get her out of Insomnia. Oh, I almost forgot. You'll need this.
(Nyx returns the Ring to Lunafreya.)
Nyx: Give Prince Noctis my regards. Libertus will take care of you from here. Have a safe journey, Your Highness.
Lunafreya: What will come of you?
Libertus: What the hell are you doing?
Nyx: Following the kings's orders.
Lunafreya: I will see the Ring to Noctis. The future will be safe, I swear it.
(Nyx nods. Seeing Glauca getting back to his feet, Libertus hands Nyx his lost kukri.)
Nyx: Planning on punching your way out of the city? Keep it. Now we're even.
Libertus: No. We'll settle up once you're back in Galahd. Me and everyone else will be waiting for you. I'm counting on you...hero.
(Libertus shepherds Lunafreya to Drautos's abandoned car. Glauca attempts to waylay them, but Nyx intercepts him in mid-air, fending him off long enough for Lunafreya to climb into the passenger seat and Libertus to get behind the wheel. Libertus ditches his bottle of pills before closing the door.)
Libertus: Buckle up, princess.
Lunafreya: My life is in your hands.
Battle for the Crown City[]
(Libertus drives away as Nyx and Glauca fight.)
Drautos/Glauca: So, the power of the Lucii returns. No matter. You are out of time.
Nyx: For you, I'll make some.
(Elsewhere in the city, a Diamond Weapon is wreaking destruction. It unleashes a missile-like attack that reaches even Nyx and Glauca. Nyx leads Glauca towards it, in the opposite direction of Libertus and Lunafreya.)
Drautos/Glauca: What can you hope to do? One man against an empire. Against the daemons. How will you save Insomnia with no Wall to protect you?
Nyx: You've got it all wrong. I'm not fighting to save Insomnia.
(As the Diamond Weapon approaches them, Nyx lifts his hand and draws on the power of the kings of yore. Around the city, the statues that make up the Old Wall come to life. The statue of The Mystic warp strikes across the city and slices the building where Nyx and Glauca are in half. Nyx follows after Glauca to continue their fight. They fall and fly through the city, and they end up on the shoulder of the Oracle King's statue. They are sent flying when the Oracle King throws their trident.)
(On a Niflheim battleship, Chancellor Izunia watches the action.)
Chancellor Izunia: So this is the might of the Old Wall. Marvelous. Truly marvelous.
(Nyx and Glauca's fight takes them back and forth across the battlefield. The Fierce takes out a Diamond Weapon before assaulting the Niflheim battleships.)
Nyx: Why'd you do it?
Drautos/Glauca: Lucis. Niflheim. It isn't who we fight for that matters, only what. We fight for our homes. That is where our allegiance lies.
(More Niflheim airships carrying Diamond Weapons arrive. The Rogue attacks one of the Diamond Weapons, and The Mystic deals the finishing blow. When Glauca flees, Nyx catches a ride on The Fierce, and they both end up fighting on another Diamond Weapon. Daemon, Glaives, and warrior king all plummet to the ground.)
Libertus: That's not something you see every day.
(On a Niflheim airship, Chancellor Izunia stands beside Emperor Aldercapt.)
Chancellor Izunia: Oh, such a pitiable waste. All those beautiful city streets, all laid to unsightly ruin.
Emperor Aldercapt: I will return to Niflheim.
Chancellor Izunia: So soon?
Emperor Aldercapt: The Crystal is ours. Finish this, and see the daemons disposed of.
Chancellor Izunia: As you command. Such a pitiable waste...
Little Sister[]
(On the wasted city streets, Glauca struggles to his feet. Nyx casts Lightning, destroying pieces of Glauca's armor and helmet.)
Nyx: How could you serve the Empire? After everything they did!
Drautos/Glauca: I do not fault them for taking what was given. I fault the man who gave it. The man who cowered behind his Wall and abandoned us to save his throne and his son. Give me the Ring, and our homes will be free again. The Empire has promised it.
Nyx: I don't see much of a future on the other side of that promise.
Drautos/Glauca: Don't be a fool. Save your friends. Give your dead sister peace. What do you fight for, if not that?
(Nyx attacks him, but using magic is taking its toll on his body even as he manages to weaken his opponent. Glauca manages to shake Nyx off, and he uses the opening to go after Libertus and Lunafreya.)
Headlong[]
(Libertus is driving to avoid the falling debris caused by Diamond Weapon's rampage.)
Libertus: Hang on. This could get bumpy.
(When Glauca lands on the street in front of them, Libertus floors it.)
Libertus: Drautos!
(Glauca hangs on to the front of the car before trying to get to Lunafreya through the passenger-side window. Libertus opens his door and pulls Lunafreya into the driver's seat.)
Libertus: Here, take the wheel.
(Libertus climbs over the roof of the car and stabs Glauca in the neck with Nyx's kukri. A struggle ensues.)
Libertus: Floor it!
(Lunafreya does as she's told, and Glauca is pinned between the moving vehicle and the wall running parallel to the roadway. The Mystic warps to their location.)
Lunafreya: Libertus!
Libertus: Just keep your foot on the gas.
(The Mystic swings his sword, knocking Glauca free of the car. Lunafreya drives them across a gap in the road, and Libertus is thrown off of the roof in time for the car to come to a stop. He goes to the driver's side where Lunafreya is.)
Libertus: You're alright?
(Libertus looks towards the battlefield that they just escaped from and spots Nyx.)
Libertus: I'll be waiting for you, hero.
(Libertus gets in the car and drives away.)
At Struggle's End[]
(Atop the statue of The Mystic, Nyx sees dawn coloring the sky. The flesh on Nyx's arm is already starting to flake away. Opposite him, Glauca stands atop a Diamond Weapon.)
Drautos/Glauca: What of your kings's power now? They've given you a burden you cannot hope to bear. I told you before :just wanting doesn't win wars.
(Nyx gives the signal, and The Mystic attacks the Diamond Weapon. The Mystic's sword shatters on impact, so his next blow is a punch to Diamond Weapon's face. In the shadow of their fight, Nyx and Glauca duel.)
(They fall.)
(In the dawn-lit ruins of Insomnia, Glauca pulls Nyx's kukri from his chest and tosses it to the ground. Nyx struggles to his feet.)
Drautos/Glauca: For the honor of my home, I fought and killed under a king I loathed. And still, he betrayed me. He betrayed us all.
Nyx: We fought for the same thing. All of us. But you've looked too long on the past, you're blind to the future.
(Nyx warps to his fallen kukri, but Glauca blocks his attack and catches him in a chokehold.)
Drautos/Glauca: Predictable. Unlike you, I learn from history.
Nyx: But you're a slave to the past.
Drautos/Glauca: A man's past is his pride.
Nyx: No. My pride is shaping the future.
(Nyx casts a Fire spell, engulfing himself and Glauca. From the armor melting on Glauca's shoulder, Nyx sees the kukri that Libertus had stabbed Glauca with earlier. Nyx laughs.)
Nyx: Looks like I'm gonna owe him big.
(Before Glauca can deal a finishing blow, Nyx warps around him to his kukri. He frees it from Glauca's shoulder only to plunge it into his chest. Behind them, The Mystic slays the Diamond Weapon.)
(On the highway, Lunafreya looks out the car window.)
Lunafreya: We're almost there.
Libertus: Almost.
(Glauca lies on his back in the rubble of the city. Nyx sits down heavily across from him as the sun rises.)
Nyx: King Regis did what he did for the future. Because of him, there's still hope for our homes.
Drautos/Glauca: Hope...
(Drautos dies. Nyx turns to watch the dawn coming as his body flakes away.)
Nyx: Not the worst way to go. Rule well, young king.
A Promise to Keep[]
(Standing outside of the car, Lunafreya looks back at the city of Insomnia. In her hand is the Ring.)
Libertus: We should move. It ain't safe here either. Hey, don't worry about Nyx. He can take care of himself. Come on.
Lunafreya: No. We must part ways here.
Libertus: What?
Lunafreya: I can hardly travel in secrecy alongside so great a hero. And I, too, have a promise to keep to Nyx. I pray you two see each other again soon.
Libertus: Yeah. Me, too.
Lunafreya: Thank you, Libertus.
(She goes her own way, and Libertus sits by the roadside as she walks towards the gate out of Insomnia.)
Libertus: Hey, queen! You and the king are always welcome in Galahd! Me and Nyx will be waiting for you!
(She nods.)
(Lunafreya leaves the city. She is accompanied by a crowd of refugees. The sky overhead marks a new day in blues and pinks.)
(Nyx's theme plays as the credits roll.)
Epilogue[]
(On a road in Leide, Prince Noctis is sitting in the back of the Regalia. His Shield, Gladiolus, is sitting next to him. His advisor, Ignis, is in the passenger's seat. And his childhood friend, Prompto, is at the wheel.)
Ignis Scientia: It's been some while. Do you remember the last time you saw Lady Lunafreya?
Noctis: About twelve years ago.
Prompto Argentum: That would make you eight? You were kids!
Gladiolus Amicitia: Hope she hasn't gotten her hopes up.
Noctis: Why not? (to Prompto, who laughs) Calm yourself.
Gladiolus: Try and keep it together when you meet her.
Ignis: She'll expect to see a fine young prince.
Noctis: Tell me something I don't know.
Ignis: We don't have time for all that. But this is your wedding we're talking about, Noct.
Noctis: Knew that, too. (to Prompto, who laughs again) You really gotta calm down.
(The car backfires, and black smoke belches out of the exhaust.)
Prompto: Uh...Uh-oh.
Gladiolus: What do you mean, "uh-oh?"
Noctis: I think I know.
(Ignis sighs.)
(Final credits.)
