The Killer Mantis (キラーマンティス, Kirāmantisu?), also known as the Gilomantis or Gilmants, is a recurring creature in the Final Fantasy series, first appearing in Final Fantasy II. It often resembles a gigantic insect with scythe-like forelimbs.

The Killer Mantis appears as an enemy encountered in the Mysidian Tower, Palamecia, Cyclone, Jade Passage, Castle Fynn, and on the world map around Mysidia and the southern point of the map. It has strong physical attacks and is weak to ice.
Final Fantasy VI[]
The Killer Mantis, also known as the Gilomantis or Gilmants, appears as an enemy encountered on southern continent of the World of Ruin. It is not too tough to take down and is weak to fire.
Final Fantasy XII[]
The Killer Mantis appears as an enemy encountered in the Lhusu Mines. It can use Cannibalize on other enemies to absorb their remaining HP and increase its level. It is weak to wind.

Etymology[]
Mantises is an order of insects that contains over 2,400 species and about 430 genera in 15 families worldwide in temperate and tropical habitats. Most are in the family Mantidae. A common name, often applied to any species in the order, is "praying mantis" due to the typical "prayer-like" posture with folded fore-limbs, although the eggcorn "preying mantis" is sometimes used in reference to their predatory habits. In Europe and other regions, however, the name "praying mantis" refers to only a single species, Mantis religiosa.
