Etymology and origin[]
Kiku-ichimonji is the collective name for Japanese swords made by collaboration between Emperor Go-Toba and thirteen best known swordsmiths in the 13th Century and the Mid-Kamakura Period. With every month of the calendar and the intercalary month assigned to each swordsmith, their rotation was meant to teach Emperor Go-Toba their methods and cross reference their talents to know how to create the greatest version of nihonto. All Kiku-ichimonji made swords, known formally individually as kiku gosaku, are inscribed with the Imperial chrysanthemum crest on their tang. Although these weapons were with made with a legitimate interest in swordsmithing by Emperor Go-Toba, they were also meant to arm an imperial rebellion in order to return power of the state back to the Imperial Household away from the Shogunate. "菊" (Kiku) means "chrysanthemum" in Japanese.
The Katayama Ichimonji refers to a divergent branch of the famed Fukuoka Ichimonji, which gained their namesake of Ichimonji from its pioneering smith, Norimune, being selected as the first of Emperor Go-toba's choice smiths to teach him swordsmithing. He is considered the co-founder of the Kiku-ichimonji Collaboration due to being the first smith and having been at the forefront of the Mongol Invasions to study broken swords and improve the aspects of nihonto of the era. The Katayama Ichimonji founding smith, Norifusa, moved his operations to Katayama of Bitchu, located near Bizen, the homeland and namesake of the Bizen-den school of Japanese swordsmithing.
