The Kappa shares its name with the Japanese name for the Imp status. In the PlayStation version, Kappa was simply referred to as Imp during Gau's tutorial, but all other releases have called the character Kappa.
Story
The Kappa appears when Cyan and Sabin recruit Gau on the Veldt, and explains how Gau's Rage skill works.
During the destruction of the World of Balance, a Kappa is seen falling off a mountain admist the destruction.
In the Gameboy Advance and later versions, the Kappa appears to congratulate the player for completing the Dragon's Den after they defeat Kaiser Dragon and receive the Diabolos magicite, and directs them to an island west of Mobliz where the party can enter the Soul Shrine.

Etymology
Kappa are legendary creatures, a type of water sprite in Japanese folklore.
An imp is "a small, mischievous devil or sprite".
In the Japanese version of Final Fantasy VI, the Green Cherry is called the Yellow Cherry. Together with the Imp status, known as Kappa in the Japanese version, the two are a reference to the Kizakura sake brand, which prominently uses a kappa as its mascot and often features it in marketing alongside yellow cherry blossoms; kizakura means "yellow cherry".
