Kairos [ˈkaɪ.rɒs] (カイロス, Kairosu?) is a memory reconfiguration system in Final Fantasy XIV. Created by Hermes in Elpis, it allows erasure or alteration of memories, so it is possible to observe creations without having to remake them from scratch.
History[]
Kairos was created by Hermes to help observe creations in different environmental conditions without having to remake them from scratch. Although Hermes still abhorred having to manipulate the memories of a living creature, he believed this was better than executing it. To avoid danger, Hermes set the intensity of the aetheric emissions to values within the prescribed limits, and to prevent misuse, the use of Kairos was limited only to those authorized by the chief overseer. Nonetheless, a creation could still be undone if it was considered a harmful existence or could not be properly studied even with Kairos.[1]
When Hermes was confronted by Emet-Selch, Hythlodaeus, Venat, and the Warrior of Light for his refusal to give Meteion into the custody of the Convocation of Fourteen, Meteion succumbed to the despair afflicting her and her sisters from their experiences of traveling the stars, and resolved to bring oblivion to Etheirys as an act of mercy. To fairly test mankind's right to live and overcome their demise, Hermes allowed Meteion to escape and invoked Kairos to rewrite the memories of all who were present. Hermes, Emet-Selch, and Hythlodaeus forgot their memories of Meteion and the Warrior of Light, believing Meteion to have perished in an accident involving Kairos' functionality, while Venat and the Warrior of Light escaped to safety with their memories of the truth intact.[2]
Behind the scenes[]
Kairos is voiced by Anthony Howell in English and by Kengo Takanashi in Japanese.
