Crest of the Republic of Junon (Gongaga Airstrip) FFVII Rebirth

Crest of the Republic, seen on a sign by the Gongaga Airstrip.

The Junon War was fought in the Final Fantasy VII series at an unspecified point after 1960, after the relations between the Shinra Electric Power Company and the Republic of Junon deteriorated. The war was originally alluded to in the Final Fantasy VII Ultimania Omega,[1] before being specifically referred to in Final Fantasy VII Remake Trace of Two Pasts.

Background[]

The Republic of Junon was founded by a community of sailors, who used a flotilla of large ships to construct a floating capital city off the coast of the modern town of Junon. The republic became the main trading hub of Gaia, and eventually came to control the Eastern Continent as well as much of the Western Continent, extending its influence even to remote areas like Gongaga.[2] This era saw great economic and a cultural growth.[3]

Shinra Inc. discovered mako in 1959. In the following year, to conduct research without the Republic's knowledge, Shinra set up a base at Mt. Nibel.[4] The Nibel Reactor, the world's first mako reactor, became operational eight years later. Shinra relocated to Midgar, which it transformed into its own corporate capital. Mako reactors were built across the territory of the Republic, and Shinra built up its own autonomous military organization.

The war[]

At an unspecified point, Shinra Inc. began challenging the Republic directly. The company annexed Costa del Sol[5] and Kalm,[6] and hostilities degenerated into open conflict. The war affected people in every corner of the world, with Gongaga being a unique exception due to its geographical isolation. Despite being able to call in conscripts from its vast territories, the Republic eventually lost to Shinra, which destroyed the Republic's floating capital. The Republic collapsed, and Shinra could assume uncontested control over its territories.[3]

It is unclear if the war took place before or after Shinra had developed SOLDIER. Presumably the war took place in good time before the Wutai War, which began in 1985, as by then Wutai was the sole nation which had yet to submit to Shinra.

Aftermath[]

Due to its strategic location, Junon would become the second-most important city to Shinra. The company turned the town into a massive fortress to guard the continent against any invasion from the west.[7] The cannon Sister Ray is capable of firing as far as Wutai.[8]
