I am Jote. Knight of the Undying, charged with the protection of His Grace, Joshua Rosfield, Keeper of the Flame of the Phoenix.

Quest line, "Cloak and Dagger"

Jote is a character in Final Fantasy XVI. She is a member of the Undying, traveling with Joshua Rosfield since the Night of Flames. She is a Knight of the Undying[2] and is introduced as Joshua's attendant.

History[]

After the events at Phoenix's Gate, Joshua Rosfield was rescued by the secret society Undying. During this time Jote was around seven years old, and it is unknown if she was already a member of the secret society then. When Joshua grew up in the society's care, he stayed their hand in wanting to send assassins after Joshua's brother, Clive Rosfield, whom they believed to be the Dominant of Ifrit, and Joshua implored them to look for answers elsewhere; in time, the secret society was tasked with uncovering the truth about Ultima.[3]

When Joshua set out to explore Valisthea and find answers on Ultima, traveling under pseudonym "Margrace", Jote came with him as his bodyguard, personal physicker, and attendant. The pair was kidnapped by the Royal Intelligencers of Waloed under command of Benedikta Harman, and brought to the Caer Norvent stronghold in Sanbreque that Waloed had taken over. When Clive heard a supposed Dominant of Fire had been brought to Caer Norvent, he broke in with his new friend, Cidolfus Telamon, and during the commotion, Joshua broke free, set the stronghold aflame, and escaped with Jote.

Jote was devoted to assisting the Dominant of Phoenix in his quest to safeguard and analyze Clive from a distance. Joshua was ill due to the Phoenix's power taking a toll on his body, and Jote was always on hand to nurture him back to health through her tonics while safeguarding him, serving something of a similar role as Clive did as Joshua's First Shield.

Northern Territories from FFXVI

Jote and Joshua in the Northern Territories.

After Joshua saved Clive at Drake's Head by imprisoning a shard of the Ultima collective inside his own body with the power of the Phoenix, the pair continued to travel around the world while Clive was busy rebuilding his hideaway for the Bearer-liberation movement he had inherited from Cid. Jote and Joshua even explored the Blighted Northern Territories, confirming that nothing remained there.

After finding out about Ultima having a degree of control over Sanbrequois politics, Joshua made his mission to meet with Prince Dion.
