During a dream, Jihli Aliapoh was supposedly visited by the twelve Archons who descended from the heavens in brightly colored eggs. As she stood in wonder, one of the Archons whispered in her ear, "Rise, young Dreamer, and make ready the vessel for our return." The remaining Archons then began to sing, reciting the one hundred and twenty verses of the Gospel of the Dreamer, and only when the echoes of the last line faded, did Jihli awaken a changed woman. After penning down all the verses of the gospel, which were clear in her memory long after her vision had passed, Jihli began to perform what she believed to be an order of the Archons. To do this, she first needed eggs. Hundreds and thousands of eggs. Realizing that she could not accomplish this difficult task alone, she enlisted the help of the town's children, who she sent out in search of spare eggs scattered around town.[1]

Three days before the festivities were to begin, two spriggans appeared at the door of the Dreamer's house, both carrying eggs. Jihli interpreted the whole scene as a sign from the Archons, believing that the two spriggans were sent to help her with the preparations. And with that, she recruited their services, without stopping to think that the appearance might have simply been a coincidence.[2] She local spriggans to steal eggs from dodo nests. Once the eggs were collected, she began to color them in the same vibrant patterns that she remembered from her dream. At first, the public scoffed at her and her odd troupe, but the more they witnessed the passion with which she sang the gospel and the determination with which she painted her eggs, they too began to believe that the Archons were destined to return. And now, Dreamer has dozens of followers busy "warming" eggs in preparation for the Hatching Hour, a final ceremony in which the eggs are used to call the Archons back to Eorzea. As word of her impassioned undertaking spread, the endeavor of Jihli grew to become that of all Eorzea, leading to the birth of the Hatching-tide tradition.[1]

At the end of the day's sermon, Jihli headed to the tent in which she and her followers kept the eggs collected from festival-goers. After checking that the eggs collected that day were safe, she locked the entrance and returned to her close quarters. The next morning, Jihli found the lock on the hut broken and the eggs that were there were missing. Due to the bite marks on the lock, the tiny footprints leading in and out of the tent, and the disappearance of the spriggan Twiggy, it was concluded that part of the spriggans who were working at the festivities had betrayed her and stolen the eggs.[2] Jihli Aliapoh and the other Dreamers then recruited adventurers to track down the thieving spriggans and recover the eggs.[3]

Hatching-tide 2012[]

During the festival the previous year, despite all the preparation and anticipation, the Twelve Archons failed to appear as prophesied. And the day after the Hatching Hour, the Dreamer was found unconscious and bereft of all the memories pertaining to her labor of love, an affliction most folk ascribe to acute emotional trauma. While it seems that the festival was a resounding failure, the prevailing sentiment was rather different. Of those citizens and adventurers who partook of the revelry, the majority recount their egg-hunting experience with great fondness. Even though it failed to deliver upon its declared objective of beckoning the Archons, Hatching-tide brought together the citizens in common cause and lifted morale in the midst of troubled times. And so the festival has returned for the second year in a row, so that people can enjoy a moment of respite even as the blood-red Dalamud loom over them. Jihli, despite having no recollection of his efforts last year, has kindly agreed to reprise his role for the happiness of the people.[4]

In preparation for the event, Jihli Aliapoh and her fellow Dreamers had ordered a large shipment of dodo eggs from the Near Eastern city-state of Radz-at-Han. However, mixed amongst the eggs were ones that resembled those of no cloudkin know. In the course of the festivities, word spread of these unusual specimens, and those folk fortunate enough to come into possession of one went to great pains to see it safely stored. Alas, it was to no avail, for when dawn arrived on the final day of Hatching-tide, naught were left of these eggs but broken shells. On the night in question, a member of the Wood Wailers spotted several turtles leaving Gridania by way of Black Tea Brook. Since they are not native to the Twelvewood but are instead native to Thavnair, it follows that they were hatched from eggs.[5]

Hatching-tide 2014[]

Jihli Aliapoh encouraged Warrior of Light to join in the celebration and asked them to pay a visit to Maisenta Hawke of the Black Rabbit Traders. Jihli Aliapoh said about the dream that inspired this year's egg designs, but the delivery of the egg recreation was delayed. In speaking with Maisenta, she said that a band of spriggans had made off with the archon eggs, and that she had dispatched men to retrieve two of the eggs. At Jihli's request, the Warrior of Light helped Augustiniel get the eggs safely to the Mih Khetto's Amphitheatre.[6]

Jihli Aliapoh had visions, revealing the location of Archon eggs along the beaches of the Costa del Sol and in southern Thanalan. She sends her Dreamers to go retrieve the eggs and asks the Warrior of Light to help Oscarlet and Orselfaux. With all the eggs gathered in Gridania, another gang of spriggans took the opportunity to steal them all at once. Luckily, however, Augustiniel and his fellow Dreamers crossed paths with them and managed to recover two of the untouched variety. In addition, Maisenta convinced the Wood Wailers to seal off the city, so that no spriggan can escape. The Wood Wailers have confirmed the location of the eggs and inform Augustiniel, who asks the Warrior of Light for help.[7]

After retrieving the Archon eggs and bringing them to the Mih Khetto's Amphitheatre, Jihli Aliapoh instructs his fellow Dreamers to prepare for the final rehearsal. Once they have begun to take their seats, Augustiniel asks the Warrior of Light for one last favor to help prepare for the ceremony. After you place the last egg in its basket, Jihli Aliapoh is suddenly surprised by the scene before her. As Warrior of Light stand surrounded by ring of Archon egg, she realizes that her vision has finally come true. It seems that the hero she foresaw has appeared not from within the casing of the eggs, but from within the ring itself. Although the Twelve Archons did not return to Eorzea, the celebration united people in the spirit of what they represented. To that end, Jihli considered this year's Hatching-tide a success.[7]

Hatching-tide 2015[]

Jihli Aliapoh was again visited by the Archons, this time in her dream she saw spriggan-shaped adventurers following an auspicious spriggan, who guided them to a wondrous treasure. She asks the Warrior of Light to use the illusory magic of the Sylphs to transform into a spriggan and bring her vision to life. Once returned to Jihli Aliapoh, the Warrior of Light reported about an unusual spriggan holding a checkered egg. Jihli recognized the auspicious spriggan from her vision, and convinced once again that the prophecy of the Archons is coming true, she asks for help in tracking the spriggan, so that he can guide the Warrior of Light to the treasure of which the Archons have spoken.[8]

Following the clues from Jihli's dream, the Warrior of Light follows the spriggan to the other city-states and meets up with the other Dreamers. Nonotta and Motte, request the Warrior of Light's help to protect the spriggan from bandits called "Shellshockers". Once the Warrior of Light secures the spriggan's escape and locates the lucky egg, Motte says she is sure that egg contained the prophesied treasure. But when Jihli arrives to testify, the auspicious spriggan also appears to Motte. Forced to confess, Motte explained that the events of the day were nothing more than a drama staged by her and the other Dreamers. She said that in the end, she was to replace the contents of the lucky egg with a treasure map that would guide Jihli to the Bismarck. and apologetically, Motte asks that the Warrior of Light also go to the Bismarck, to partake of the "wonderful treasure" that she and her accomplices have prepared. When they arrive, they discover that her Dreamers have organized a surprise party for her. Jihli is thrilled to see so many sympathizers coming together to share the warmth of their hearts, and recalls the words that the Archons of old spoke to her in her dream.[9]

Hatching-tide 2016[]

Jihli Aliapoh again had a dream that she believes is a vision sent by the Twelve Archons. She tells that she dreamed of a scene of revelry with Eorzeans from all over gathering in Gridania to participate in an egg hunt and other festivities. Although the dream grew too bright to see it herself, she recalls with confidence that at the height of the celebration, a chosen egg cracked to reveal a gold treasure. Jihli then asked the Warrior of Light to help her recreate the scene in her dream, promising to share the prophesied wealth if they succeed.[10]

Nonotta provided more details on how to recreate Jihli's vision. She explained that the Dreamers, along with the Black Rabbit Traders of Gridania, have created three Hatching-tide activities and asks the Warrior of Light to participate in them.[10] After the Warrior of Light has performed her tasks, Nonotta reports that although the festival is going splendidly, the Hatching-tide has not yet arrived. Intrigued as to why there is no sign of the Archons' gift, and noting Jihli's somewhat disappointed expression, she has asked the Warrior of Light to ask Jihli if there were any details from the dream that she forgot to mention. While the Warrior of Light was talking to Jihli, Nonotta runs up and exclaims that the egg chosen for the hatching ceremony was stolen by a spriggan. Although annoyed at first, Jihli has a sudden revelation: the egg hunt in her dream was for a single egg. Excited, she declares that the real hunt has begun and asks the Warrior of Light to help find the thieving spriggan.[11]

They discover that the spriggan left the egg in a stable in Bentbranch Meadows. Keitha reveals that the egg was actually a chocobo egg, and because they are extremely delicate she scolds Jihli for trying to decorate and display it. Nonotta realizes his mistake and apologizes. Keitha then invites everyone to witness the egg hatching, and afterwards, while the two Dreamers worry about the newly hatched chocobo, Jihli has another epiphany: the bird's golden feathers must have been the "gold treasure" she dreamed of. Although not entirely accurate, both Jihli and Nonotta agree that the prophecy has been fulfilled.[11]

Hatching-tide 2017[]

This year Jihli Aliapoh has seen a vision of a hovering egg, from which a chocobo emerges to startle people before going on to lay a magnificent, dazzling gemstone. Jihli asks the Warrior of Light for help in recreating her dream and directs them to the Hyrstmill in North Shroud, where Nonotta would give more detailed instructions. Nonotta challenged the Warrior of Light while assembling a floating egg of dubious origin, which she inadvertently revealed to be an invention she calls the eggshilaration system. Nonotta revealed that they were the ones who built the floating egg and asked to keep it a secret so as not to destroy Jihli's dreams.[12]

After alerting Jihli, she reports that the spriggan has gone to Gridania and started making mischief, scaring the townspeople indiscriminately. Before the Wood Wailers settle the matter with violence, Jihli has become determined to resolve the matter peacefully and asks the Warrior of Light to contact the spriggan. The Warrior of Light locates the spriggan, who goes by the name Riggy, and manages to calm him down. Apparently the creature was just imitating the Warrior of Light's actions with the eggshilaration system in hopes of making people happy. Jihli invited Riggy to be an official part of the festival, and together they return to Hyrstmill.[13]

Reflecting upon recent events, Jihli experiences an epiphany: the gemstone in her dream is none other than Riggy, who rode atop his magnificent rock and spread dazzling smiles to those around him. Grateful for your part in making her vision a reality, she spontaneously decides to gift you the eggshilaration system. Loath to part with her creation, Nonotta inadvertently reveals her secret, but much to her surprise, the truth impresses rather than upsets Jihli. After a tender moment, she changes her mind and gives the eggshilaration system as a gift to the Warrior of Light.[13]

Hatching-tide 2018[]

Nonotta has recruited the Warrior of Light to help her with a Hatching-tide conundrum. According to Nonotta, Jihli Aliapoh has been denied her usual prophetic dream this year, and so the Dreamers have decided to organize an egg hunt around town. The festival eggs in question, however, have been stolen. She asks the Warrior of Light to help the Hatching-Tide Hunter, Leih Aliapoh, find the stolen eggs.[14]

Miqo'te Mender from Final Fantasy XIV

The "Miqo'te Mender".

After gathering evidence, Leih Aliapoh has become convinced that a spriggan is responsible for the missing eggs. When she captures a suspicious spriggan, a Miqo'te conjurer appears and insists that that spriggan was innocent. She said that the spriggan was a friend of hers named Riggy, and that they had witnessed a group of spriggans committing the crime. She explained that Riggy chased the spriggans to their lair and escaped with one of the stolen treasures. Because the trail to the lair is too narrow, Miqo'te suggests sending Riggy back to the lair. Thanks to the directions via linkpearl, Riggy's raid on the spriggan lair is a resounding success. While a spriggan was indeed responsible for taking the eggs away, Leih Aliapoh deduced that the real mastermind behind the events was none other than the Miqo'te conjurer, Jihli Aliapoh herself. Jihli happily confesses to the crime, and explains how her deceit was in fact inspired by one of her prophetic dreams.[14]

Jihli reveals that a few days ago, she was cleaning out a storage closet and came across an old journal that belonged to her mother, Mihli, a talented practitioner of the healing arts. In the journal it mentioned that her sister lived as a hunter in the depths of Twelveswood. According to the journal, Jihli's aunt gave birth to an only daughter, who grew up showing a special talent for the bow. After showing the evidence, Jihli then reveals that Leih is her cousin.[14]

Hatching-tide 2019[]

Jihli Aliapoh had another of her prophetic dreams, in which she witnessed Riggy hiding a fantastically decorated egg. Although it is unclear whether this alludes to some greater meaning, Jihli believed that the success of the festival depends on reconstituting the events that unfolded in her vision, and to that end she requested that Riggy and Nonotta make preparations for an egg hunt. Instead of simply hiding eggs in Gridania, Nonotta and Riggy have created some sort of puzzle, with a map and a series of cryptic clues showing the way. Warrior of Light and Jihli are also given Hatching-tide costumes, which, while serving no discernible purpose, are treated by Nonotta as being an essential part of the festivities.[15]

Warrior of Light and Jihli successfully deduce that the one in possession of the gilded topaz egg is Gabineaux, a prominent figure among the woodcutters of Central Shroud. Upon hearing the password, he happily hands over the prize in question, as instructed by Nonotta and Riggy, who arrive almost immediately after. Now that the gilded topaz egg has been presented to Nonotta and Riggy, the hunt is officially over. Nonotta and Riggy, through their efforts, have proven that the riddle they have created can indeed be solved by those with the necessary intellect and perseverance, and the next step is to allow the rest of the festival attendees to participate. Having participated in this year's activities rather than organizing them herself, Jihli vows not to be outdone by her assistants when the next Hatching-tide arrives.[16]

Hatching-tide 2020[]

Jihli Aliapoh says she has been blessed with another vision: this time not of historical heroes, but of fluffy rabbits. Nonotta, says that a legion of chickens meticulously acquired by her and Jihli have escaped from the hen house, jeopardizing their meticulous plans for this year's festivities. After Warrior of Light recovers the lost chickens, Jihli rejoices to hear that the chickens have been returned, allowing the Hatching-tide to begin for real.[17]

Jihli Aliapoh explained that they were preparing this year's main event, a grand procession that will march through the streets of Gridania, presenting the children. After completing the procession, Jihli thanked Warrior of Light and Nonotta for their efforts in making this year's Hatching-tide an unforgettable event, confessing that she left her post to participate in the procession.[18]

Hatching-tide 2021[]

Jihli Aliapoh had a vision wherein rabbits and chickens work paw in claw to decorate the town for the annual event. She explains, however, that there was a minor setback in the preparations and asks the Warrior of Light to look for Nonotta who had gone to get eggs from the poultry farmer. Nonotta introduces Master Pawlin, the owner of a flock of chickens.[19]

After they transport the eggs to Jihli, she accepts the eggs harshly and turns her attention to the important tasks of baking and painting. Meanwhile, Nonotta asks Warrior of Light to escort her to the front of the amphitheater, where she will distribute thank-you gifts to the crowd of Hatching-tide helpers. Jihli thanks them once again for their help, before commenting on the unusual number of moogles and sylphs present. The celebration, it seems, is a great success.[20]

Hatching-tide 2022[]

Jihli Aliapoh said she dreamed of brave adventurers walking around the city, handing out decorative eggs in the company of strange-looking chickens and rabbits. To recreate her dream, Jihli invited Pawlin to bring his chickens to Gridania and, placed an order for a large quantity of mammets resembling the ones in her dream. Since the chickens had not yet become accustomed to their new environment, Jihli asked Warrior of Light to help him collect the eggs.

Nonotta reports that some rare creatures known as "happy rabbits" have invaded the making and frightened the chickens and in the confusion both the rabbit and the chickens run away from the farm. Following the trail, the Warrior of Light discovered that the rabbits and chickens had fled out of town. In the Central Shroud, the Warrior of Light manages to round up the escaped creatures.

Back in town, Jihli thanks them profusely for their efforts, further explaining that the chickens have calmed down and seem ready and willing to offer their eggs in abundance. Nonotta offers to finish decorating the eggs so that Warrior of Light and her new friends can go out into the streets and distribute them exactly as Jihli imagined in her dreams. Relieved that her dreams have once again brought smiles and joy to the inhabitants of Gridania, she presents Warrior of Light with a mammet made to look like one of the rabbits.[21]

Hatching-tide 2023[]

Jihli Aliapoh admits that this year's vision was rather peculiar because it featured Tonberries, creatures of myth known less for their seasonal whimsy and more for their habit of mercilessly stabbing things. This dream proved prophetic indeed, when Ssylphs descended upon Gridania, dismantling decorations, harassing residents, and otherwise making a nuisance of themselves. These mischievous creatures are deathly afraid of the tonberries' wilting gaze, and with the help of a self-proclaimed tonberry connoisseur named Hamlyn, Jihli Aliapoh's volunteers have donned tonberry costumes to scare off the sylphs.

Hamlyn delivers a Tonberry costume for the Warrior of Light to scare the troublesome Sylphs in Gridania. Once done, Jihli is delighted to learn that the Sylphs' mischief has been thwarted and that preparations for the festival are once again underway. She tells him that Pawlin has sent a generous amount of eggs for the celebration, and she has needed to hire the Goldsmiths' Guild in Ul'dah to help decorate the eggs. Nonotta interrupted this brief relief with panicked reports of chaos in Central Shroud. The caravan of Archon eggs coming from Ul'dah had been attacked by angry sylphs and the delivery mammet went into a frenzy trying to stop the theft. Jihli theorizes that the reason for the attack must have been that the sylphs were jealous of the celebration, since they were unable to hold their own annual spring festival due to an incident.[22]

Hamlyn suggested using the same strategy they had just used in Gridania, disguise themselves as Tonberry and scare the sylphs away. After a frantic fight involving the sylphs and a giant mammet, Warrior of Light manages to retrieve the scattered Archon eggs. Hamlyn laments the absence of large crowds that could have witnessed the miraculous feats performed by a Tonberry. However, some citizens saw the whole thing and thanked Warrior of Light for retrieving their eggs. To prevent further incidents, Hamlyn has the idea that they decorate the eggs with a Tonberry theme. Jihli accepts the suggestion and says that because the eggs are packed, they would still need a tonberry guard with the caravan.[23]
