Jessie Rasberry,[3] also known as Jesse[4] in a demo release, is a non-player character in Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VII Remake. She is a member of Avalanche together with Barret, Biggs, Wedge, and Tifa. She develops feelings for Cloud and the player is given the option to flirt with her at times. In Final Fantasy VII Remake, she has an expanded role.

Profile

Appearance

Jessie is a young woman with brown eyes and medium-length brown hair tied into a ponytail. In Hoshi o Meguru Otome, it is mentioned she is about Aerith's age, and the Final Fantasy VII Remake Ultimania gives her age as 23. She wears a red headband, a blue shirt underneath a metal breastplate, metal pauldrons, brown gloves, knee-length green capris, and armored boots. Her appearance in Final Fantasy VII Remake stays true to her original design, but adds a black mail shirt to the ensemble and turns her shirt into a leotard with black trim and a zipper on her left shoulder.

Personality

Jessie is the technical expert of Avalanche who builds bombs for raids on the mako reactors, following the plans of the original, more militant Avalanche. Despite being the technical expert, Jessie is pained by insecurities, and is quick to blame herself if a mission goes awry.

She is vibrant and animated, and in Final Fantasy VII Remake, it is revealed her passion before joining Avalanche was acting. She abandoned her dream of becoming an actress when her father became ill, and blames the Shinra Electric Power Company for what happened to him, leading to her joining Avalanche. She is fearless when it comes to love, openly showing her feelings for Cloud and flirting with him. As a former aspiring actress, Jessie now uses her talents to hide her flaws and weaknesses behind smiles, trying to portray herself as strong in front of other Avalanche members. She only truly opens herself to Cloud.

Original continuity

Avalanche operations

When Avalanche infiltrates Mako Reactor 1, Jessie comes with a code that opens a door and descends an elevator with Barret and Cloud. After the bomb Jessie had built is set up, Cloud helps Jessie during their evacuation after she gets her leg stuck. The Avalanche members part ways and regroup at the train back to the Sector 7 slums, during which Jessie shows Cloud a digital model of Midgar and tells him about her fascination with computers. The bombing mission was a success, and Jessie is amazed seeing the results of it on the news back at their Sector 7 hideout.

The next day Avalanche sets off to Mako Reactor 5. Jessie has made everyone a fake ID card to get past the train's security check, but because of the previous day's attack the system has been updated and the group is found to be holding forged IDs and are forced to jump off the train. Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie stay behind when Cloud, Tifa, and Barret jump off first, Jessie disguised as a train conductor. Cloud can compliment her on her disguise, or tell her it needs more work. This answer affects the affection value toward Tifa.

When Shinra attacks the Sector 7 pillar, Jessie, Biggs and Wedge help Barret defend it. When Cloud finds her severely wounded she is glad she could talk to him one last time, and says since many people died because of her bombs, this is her rightful punishment. Jessie is among the casualties of Shinra bringing the upper plate down on Sector 7.

Within the lifestream

During Hoshi o Meguru Otome, Jessie appears to Aerith within the lifestream when she thinks of Cloud and Tifa, and Jessie's remnants respond to their names. Jessie causes Aerith to call Biggs and Wedge, and the three are happy to hear Cloud joined Avalanche officially, and that the group is fighting a larger threat, but tell Aerith they are fated to never be absorbed into the lifestream due to the lives they took while alive.

Jessie asks Aerith to leave them because she must still have a task to fulfill before she is absorbed, and being near them will only taint her with their sinful memories and inflict their fate on her. As they leave, Aerith calls to them and tells them their deaths helped save people by delaying Shinra, allowing more of Sector 7's people, including Marlene, to evacuate in time.

Remake continuity

Jessie on stage from Final Fantasy VII Remake

Jessie on stage.

Jessie was an actress whose big break of getting the role of the Princess at the Gold Saucer was disrupted when her father, Rowan Rasberry, contracted mako poisoning following a work accident at a major reactor. After her father entered a coma, believing that his soul is stuck between the physical world and the lifestream, Jessie blames Shinra for her father's condition and joined Avalanche to stop the company's siphoning of the planet's life energy.

Building the bomb that Avalanche intends to use on the Mako Reactor 1, Jessie comes with a code that opens a door and descends an elevator with Barret and Cloud. After the bomb is set up, Cloud helps Jessie after she gets her leg stuck. The Avalanche members part ways and regroup at the train back to the Sector 7 slums, during which Jessie shows Cloud a digital model of Midgar. Though the bombing mission was a success, Jessie blames herself for the resulting devastation and civilian casualties, unaware that President Shinra activated the reactor's self-destruct when Jessie's bomb's detonation caused damage to the pump alone. She thus wants to procure less potent blasting agent for the next bombing mission. Though Jessie tries to convince Barret, he does not want to hire Cloud for the next mission.

FFVIIR Cloud and Jessie Bike

Cloud and Jessie on a motorcycle.

Jessie hires Cloud to take her to her parents to steal a Shinra ID card from her father to get into the Shinra warehouse where the blasting agent is stored, giving him materia as payment. To her surprise, Biggs and Wedge have caught wind of her plans and tag along. As the trains have stopped running, the four ride to the topside on two motorbikes, Jessie riding with Cloud with him driving. They fail an ID check and are accosted by Shinra bikers, among them a maniacal SOLDIER 3rd Class, but Cloud deals with them much to Jessie's elation. If Cloud does especially well, Jessie will kiss his cheek as a "reward."

While Jessie, Biggs and Wedge amuse Jessie's mother, Cloud sneaks in through a back door to steal Jessie's father's ID card as he lies comatose nearby. Jessie sneaks into the Shinra warehouse while Cloud, Biggs and Wedge organize a diversion to buy her time. While they wait for Jessie's signal, Biggs tells Cloud about Jessie's past and her reasons of joining Avalanche to stop Shinra from siphoning the planet's life energy.

Jessie Choices from FFVII Remake

Jessie asks Cloud to return the next day.

Jessie acquires the blasting agent and rendezvouses with Biggs and Cloud, Wedge having been saved from Shinra forces by another Avalanche faction. They grab Wedge as the other Avalanche soldiers flee and Jessie checks that he is unharmed. They sneak into a spot where Jessie knows parachutes for Shinra maintenance workers are kept and parachute down to the slums, Jessie riding with Biggs. Back at the slums, Cloud swings by her place at her request where she gives him another orb of materia and thanks him with a hug. Though Cloud is reluctant, he agrees to one day possibly go out with her, making her ecstatic.

The next morning the slums are attacked by invisible ghosts. They attack Jessie and Barret at the steps of Seventh Heaven while trying to stop Cloud and Tifa reaching them. After Jessie is injured, the ghosts disperse and Cloud carries her inside. Barret declares she can't take part in the next bombing mission due to her condition, hiring Cloud as her replacement.

Barret, Tifa and Cloud set off to Mako Reactor 5 while Biggs has already gone ahead and Wedge stays back at the bar to look after Jessie and Barret's daughter Marlene. Jessie has made everyone a fake ID card to get past the train's security check, but because of the previous day's attack the system has been updated and the group is found to be holding forged IDs and are forced to jump off the train.

File:Jessie's final moments from FFVII Remake.jpg

Jessie is injured.

When Shinra attacks the Sector 7 pillar, Jessie, Biggs and Wedge help Barret and the others defend it. Jessie is seen on the 13th floor, where she uses one of her grenades to down a pursuing helicopter. As she aims up her shot, Whispers can be seen flying around behind her. The grenade hits, but this results in the chopper bursting into flames and crash-landing onto the same floor, consequently burying Jessie under beams and rubble. After being dug out by Cloud, Jessie uses her final moments to tell him and Tifa not to be sad over her death, glad she could talk to him one last time. She believes that since many people died because of her bombs, dying is her rightful punishment. In the ending, Jessie's glove and presumably her bandanna are on the desk beside a bed with an unconscious Biggs. As of the first installment of the Final Fantasy 7 remake, her exact status is currently unknown. She is presumed dead, along with Biggs, by Cloud, Barret and Tifa.

Spoilers end here.

Other media

Jessie KHII

In Kingdom Hearts, a character named Jessie appears in Kingdom Hearts II. She is the owner of an Accessory shop in Twilight Town and appears together with Biggs and Wedge. She looks quite different from the Jessie from Final Fantasy VII, as she has blonde hair and wears blue. She plays a bit of a role at the beginning of the game, being the first character the player can talk to using Reaction Commands.

Behind the scenes

Jessie-ffvii-highres

Jessie was designed by Tetsuya Nomura. She was redesigned by Roberto Ferrari for Final Fantasy VII Remake.

In the original Final Fantasy VII, Jessie has a high-resolution model of her upper body, used in the scene where she and Cloud look at the Midgar map.

Characters using the models of Jessie and Biggs are seen in Elmyra's flashback at the train station in the original game, but it is ambiguous whether they are meant to be the same characters.

In the Remake, it is revealed through the Ultimania that Jessie is the one who builds the water purifiers Tifa and Cloud deliver in Chapter 2, as well other household items that are sold to the population of the Sector 7 Slums to gather funds for Avalanche.[5]

Voice

Jessie is voiced by Erica Lindbeck in Final Fantasy VII Remake. Lindbeck knew little about the original game when joining the cast, but had heard her role would be minor. She was nonetheless very excited to be in a Final Fantasy game at all, and was happy that her role was being expanded upon. Lindbeck also loved the relationship between Jessie and Tifa.[6]
