Story

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. (Skip section)

Garland, the ruler of Terra, had become wary of the summoners' powers, the ability to call forth Eidolons. In order to make sure his plan of assimilating Gaia would go smoothly, Garland attacked Madain Sari with the Invincible, killing most of the villagers. However, Jane was able to escape, taking her daughter onto a boat and fleeing the burning village, but the rough seas caused by the storm resulted in her death. Luckily, Jane was able to protect her daughter, as Sarah (Garnet) sailed safely to Alexandria to be adopted by the royal family and raised as a princess.

Spoilers end here.

Garnet had difficulty remembering her childhood before the age of six and had forgotten Jane; however as shown by the opening FMV of the game, Garnet remembers her mother, if only vaguely.

Once she has learned the truth of her birth, Garnet sadly laments that the Invincible took everything from her, including Jane and her adoptive mother.
