The Iron Golem, also known as the IronGOL or IRONGOL[1], is an enemy in Final Fantasy. The sturdiest of golems in the base game, it is extremely rare, found only on floor B4 of the Chaos Shrine. It has only a 1/64 chance of appearing in pre-Pixel Remaster releases, making it one of the rarest enemies in the game; its chance of appearing is greatly increased in the Pixel Remaster.

Stats[]

  1. Resists prior to Pixel Remaster.

Battle[]

The Iron Golem can be extremely dangerous for parties who venture into the Chaos Shrine unprepared. It can use Deadly Gas, an Instant Death element attack that targets the whole party, killing any members who do not resist; this is particularly dangerous in the Pixel Remaster release, where it has a much greater chance using Deadly Gas. Protect Rings and Ribbons will help ensure survival, as will NulDeath. Having much better physical defense compared to the previous two golems, as well as the usual elemental resistances, the Flare spell is the most effective against this enemy.

Etymology[]

In Jewish and medieval folklore, a golem is an animated anthropomorphic being, magically created from inanimate matter. The word was used to mean an amorphous, unformed material (usually out of stone and clay) in Psalms and medieval writing. Adam, the first man created by God in the Holy Bible, was a golem since he was created from dust and sand. Having a golem servant was seen as the ultimate symbol of wisdom and holiness, with stories of prominent Rabbis owning golems throughout the middle ages. In modern times, the word golem, sometimes pronounced goilem in Yiddish, has come to mean one who is slow, clumsy, and generally dimwitted.
