In a World Approaching Its End[1] is the twenty-seventh chapter of Final Fantasy VII, and the first of the third act, "Turmoil". After the events at the North Crater, in which Sephiroth returned in his true form and cast Meteor to end the world, Tifa Lockhart and Barret Wallace awoke in Junon, evacuated there by the Shinra Electric Power Company. Using them as scapegoats for the state of the Planet, Scarlet set to broadcast a public execution for Tifa and the party. Meanwhile, Junon is attacked by Weapons.
Walkthrough[]
Escape as Barret[]
The quest begins with the player controlling Tifa in a room after a flashback sequence. After talking to Barret, the next sequence begins, and player control switches to Barret in handcuffs in Junon. Though the objective is to follow Rufus Shinra into the next room, the player can control Barret anywhere, including using the save point (in the second screen along the way) before then proceeding to follow Tifa.
Upon reaching the press room, a story sequence begins, after which Barret and Cait Sith begin a battle together. Following this, Barret must attempt to open the door to the press room to find it locked, beginning a cutscene after a few attempts. After this, the press room is locked, preventing the party from freeing Tifa from the chamber, and thus must run out onto the streets.
On the streets, if Yuffie was been recruited by the player, she will appear disguised as a reporter, and can join the party to help battle enemies here. Either way, Barret and Cait Sith must head toward the airport, take the elevator up, and head right to the airship, before control switches back to Tifa.
Escaping gas chamber as Tifa[]
Tifa must escape the gas chamber by retrieving the key on the floor and using it to free her. The 
or [CANCEL] button controls her legs, the 
or [SWITCH] button controls her right arm, the 
or [OK] control her left arm while the 
or [MENU] control her head. To escape:
- Move the legs to grab the key.
- Move both head and legs to grab the key with her teeth.
- Move both the head and one of the arms to unlock that arm.
- Move the unlocked arm to unlock the other arm.
After escaping, Tifa can press the button in the back of the room to turn off gas, and attempt to open the door on the right to escape.
Despite circumstances, there is no time limit.
Tifa and Scarlet slap fight[]
Scarlet slaps Tifa.
After escaping the gas chamber Tifa runs to the end of the Mako Cannon where Scarlet catches up with her and the two begin slapping one another. Whoever receives five slaps first loses. The player must time their slaps by using (or [OK]).
After the slep fight ends, a cutscene begins and leads to the next quest, "A Shocking Reunion", aboard the Highwind.
Behind the scenes[]
Normally, whether the player wins or loses, Scarlet will say "Take her away" in her dialogue afterwards. An error in the programming prevents the player from seeing the Tifa-win-version of Scarlet's line, as the requirement for Scarlet's unused line is that she be slapped six times and this is impossible because the minigame ends at five slaps. Scarlet was meant to say "God! I can't stand it!" if Tifa wins.[2]
