The Imperial Camp is a location in Final Fantasy VI. It is a temporary encampment set up by the Gestahlian Empire during their invasion of Doma. The camp is overseen by General Leo and Kefka.

The camp is one of the few areas that cannot be revisited, so the player must grab the handful of treasure here on their first visit.

During the siege of Doma, some of the Imperial soldiers discuss a rumor, while being cautious about Kefka's presence, that Kefka plans to drive out Leo and usurp his position as general, with one of the soldiers angrily threatening to quit if Kefka ended up being made general before being called to a charge at Doma Castle. After the initial charge is foiled by Cyan, Doma's retainer, General Leo begins to reconsider the Imperial strategy for victory, attempting to minimize casualties on both sides. Kefka encourages the use of underhanded tactics, and has no sympathy for the Doman defenders or captured Gestahlian soldiers.

Sabin and Shadow infiltrate the base to get to Baren Falls and the Veldt, and bear witness to Kefka plotting to poison the river that is Doma's water supply. Leo rejects Kefka's plan, but is called away by Emperor Gestahl. In his absence, Kefka goes ahead with his plan despite the attempts of Sabin and Shadow to stop him, also taking joy at people screaming. The poisoning kills the vast majority of Doma's citizens, and Cyan storms the camp on his own in a rage. Sabin and Shadow intervene to help him, and the three commandeer three suits of Magitek Armor and fight their way out of the camp.

With Doma fallen the camp is seemingly dispersed, as it cannot be re-entered and the Empire occupies Doma Castle as their stronghold in the region.

Layout[edit | edit source]

The camp is clearly intended as a temporary base of operations. Tents and simple barricades and fortifications dot the camp, and supply crates are left all around. Some tents sit on sand and dirt mounds. Two watchtowers on the western edge of the camp keep a lookout in the direction of Doma Castle. A Satellite rests in the camp, its function unknown, and suits of Magitek Armor are hooked up to mechanical pumps, presumably a refueling device. This makes the Imperial Camp the only place in the game where players can see Magitek Armor being refueled.

All encounters in the Imperial Camp are scripted in some manner; there are no random encounters.

Treasures[edit | edit source]

The chest on the mound to the right of the camp entrance is locked, and the player has the option to hit it or kick it. Both options unlock the chest, but kicking it provokes a Doberman standing guard outside the tent to attack. The chest contains a Star Pendant. The chest must be opened before viewing the scene with Kefka across the bridge, after this scene the party will not cross over the bridge again.

The tent above the Magitek Armor being refueled has two chests, the right chest contains a Mythril Glove and the left chest is a monster-in-a-box, Satellite, and it drops a Green Beret. Outside this tent, if the player walks right, up, and behind the tent, the party will jump down to enter an otherwise inaccessible tent with a chest containing a Barrier Ring. These treasures can be acquired as soon as the first scripted battle against Kefka ends, but before talking to him when he flees beyond the guard at the end of the path.

Quests[edit | edit source]

Siege of Doma[edit | edit source]

In Sabin's scenario, shortly after the player enters the Imperial Camp for the first time, they will view a scene of the Empire attacking Doma Castle. The player will be placed in control of Cyan outside; while they can talk to the normal troopers to fight them, the sequence ends when the player confronts the Imperial commander they must defeat a Captain. When the Captain is felled, control switches back to Sabin at the Imperial Camp.

South over the bridge a scene with General Leo will occur, and when attempting to advance there will be a scene with Kefka, after which the player faces him in a scripted battle that ends whenever Kefka is damaged. Kefka flees; this is the opportune time to get the treasures in the camp. Kefka flees again when spoken to and then initiates another scripted battle. When speaking to Kefka near a soldier, he flees and the party fights two Imperial Soldiers and Templar. Another scene occurs and the player will be back in control of Cyan at Doma Castle. Enter the castle for a scene in the throne room. It is possible to check Doma for treasures now, but the only item the player can obtain is a Remedy from a pot in the room under the stairs. Enter the room next to the throne room for a scene.

At the Imperial Camp again, speak to Cyan from behind or the sides to initiate a series of scripted battles against Imperial enemies; the first two are against four Soldiers, the third is against two Soldiers and an Officer. After a scene, Cyan formally joins the party and the party will commandeer suits of Magitek Armor. They must now fight their way back to the bridge in the camp. Along the way scripted battles will occur; first a Magitek Armor, then a Magitek Armor and two Imperial Soldiers, and finally two Magitek Armor. When the player crosses the bridge in the camp a scene will occur and they will automatically exit the Imperial Camp to the overworld.

Separated from the others after a dive into raging waters, Sabin heads for the mines to rejoin the party. On his way, he witnesses an Imperial attack on Doma Castle, and decides to investigate the Imperial Camp.

Description

Imperial Camp is unlocked by completing Mt. Kolts in the Final Fantasy VI realm. Completion of this dungeon unlocks South Figaro Cave in the Final Fantasy VI realm.

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

There is an alternate line of dialogue when entering the Imperial Camp where Sabin is supressed at the presence of Imperial soldiers. The line's intended purpose is to be used if players did not recruit Shadow at the start of Sabin's scenario, thus Shadow would not have told Sabin about the Imperial presence. However, this dialogue was a bit poorly coded - it does not check if the player spoke to Shadow, but checks if Shadow has been met at all and named. Thus, if the player met and named Shadow in South Figaro earlier, they will not receive Sabin's alternate dialogue regardless of if they recruit Shadow or not.

While the Imperial Camp has a south-western exit, it is only for show - this edge of the area where Cyan arrives from has no entrance or exit data associated with it. Approaching this area causes the party to turn back as though they were attempting to leave and refuse.

Sabin has an unused alternate line introducing himself to Cyan.

If the player uses hacks or glitches to have Mog in the party while fighting in the Imperial Camp, he would learn the Desert Lullaby dance associated with desert terrain.
