Attacks all enemies with fire. Triggers "Hellfire."
Description
Ifrit is a level 2 summon in Final Fantasy V obtained in the main story. It is a fire-elemental summon which uses Hellfire, an attack dealing fire damage to all enemies. Ifrit is one of the iconic summoned monsters in Final Fantasy. Ifrit is also one of the forms the enemy Metamorph can take.
Ifrit can be used via Summon and Call once obtained, and also via Magic Lamp. With the latter two, the summoner uses no MP.
Ifrit's purpose was to burn books in the Library of the Ancients that were possessed by monsters.[1]
Obtained[]
Ifrit is obtained in the story in the Library of the Ancients.
Stats[]
Ability | MP cost | Power | Effect |
---|---|---|---|
Hellfire | 11 | 45 | Fire-elemental damage to all enemies. |
Ifrit's damage is calculated as follows:
As a summon, there is no split damage property, and Hellfire is unaffected by reflect. If the target absorbs fire, it is healed instead of damaged; if it is immune to fire, the attack misses. If the target resists fire, the Attack modifier in the formula is halved, but if it is weak to fire, the modifier is doubled and the attack ignores the target's Magic Defense.
Several pieces of equipment increase the power of elemental attacks by 50%. The bonus is applied before subtracting the opponent's Magic Defense. The weapons that boost fire are the Black Mage's Flame Rod and Magus Rod, and the Geomancer's Rune Chime. The Mix Elemental Power empowers all elements.
Use[]

Hellfire.
Ifrit performs the attack Hellfire when summoned, which deals moderate fire-elemental damage to all enemies. Ifrit's damage is comparable to the Black Magic spell Fira, which has a slightly higher attack power, but splits its damage when group-cast and can be reflected. This means that in most cases, Ifrit's damage against a group of enemies is better than using Fira, but against single targets, Fira is the better spell to use. Ifrit's damage is also comparable to the Blue Magic spell Flame Thrower, which also cannot be reflected and deals slightly higher damage than Ifrit, but can only target one enemy.
Ifrit is a powerful spell around the time it is acquired, but is best used against enemies weak to fire. Compared to summons acquired around the same time, Shiva and Ramuh, Ifrit deals slightly more damage than Shiva, but less than Ramuh. This means that, against enemies with no elemental weakness, Ramuh is the better summon. When Titan and later summons become available, Ifrit is outclassed as its damage will not be able to keep pace.
Another fire-elemental summon acquired later in the game is Phoenix, which deals fire-elemental damage in addition to reviving an ally fully. Phoenix deals more damage than Ifrit, but its prohibitive MP cost means it will not be used primarily for damage.

Etymology[]
Ifrit (also spelled Efreet or Afreet, from Arabic عفريت Ifrīt), is the name given to a class of Jinn (Demons also known as Djinn, Djinni, and Genie) that embody fire. Though they could live for thousands of years, they were not immortal, and if cut, they would "bleed" the fire running through their veins until it consumed their bodies.
In Arabian mythology,
