Description

Ice materia is a Magic Materia Magic Materia in Final Fantasy VII Remake and "Episode INTERmission" equipped to provide the user Ice Ice-elemental spells. The materia has the ice element, meaning it can be linked with the Elemental Materia Elemental Materia to add ice damage to attacks or resist against ice. It can be paired with Synergy Materia Synergy Materia for auto-casting.

Obtained[]

An ice materia can first be found in the cave in Scrap Boulevard, first visited during the quest "A Job for the Neighborhood Watch". More can also be purchased from shops from Sector 7 Slums onwards, costing 500 gil each.

Later, an ice materia is initially equipped on Aerith Gainsborough.

Ice materia in the Underground Test Site.

In Chapter 13, "A Broken World", the player explores the Underground Test Site as Barret during the "In Solitude" segment. After reuniting with Tifa, the player should take the path right go up the stairs, then shoot at the turbines to create a safe passage forward. The left turbine creates a path to a treasure chest with an ether, the right turbine leads to a dead-end with boxes, while the middle proceeds forward. Shooting the safes around cages can net items; one cage contains an ice materia orb, while another has a chest with a turbo ether.

In INTERmission, ice materia is sold in the Sector 7 Slums item shop, and in all vending machines.

Blizzard.

Ice materia grants three tiers of ice-elemental spells, beginning with the base spell: Blizzard. After receiving AP, it unlocks more powerful spells that require greater MP use: 300 AP unlocks Blizzara, and 900 AP unlocks Blizzaga. These spells are comparable in damage to spells from Fire Materia Fire Materia, Lightning Materia Lightning Materia, and Wind Materia Wind Materia. Equipping the ice materia increases the user's max MP by +1.

Ice materia can be useful for spellcasting against enemies weak to ice, particularly on Aerith and Cloud, who have the highest and second-highest Magic Magic attribute, respectively. Ice spells fire a homing projectile that can cause knockdown on impact, which can pressure some enemies, and will then will shatter after a short delay and can deal large amounts of stagger (particularly if the target was knocked down or is pressured), and deal heavy damage. Enemies who were not knocked down can dodge out before the spell detonates. The initial projectile can also be blocked by obstacles between the caster and target. When an ice spell shatters, it can launch enemies who are susceptible to launch, causing them to become pressured.

The Elemental Materia Elemental Materia can be paired with ice materia to add the ice element to equipment. This can be paired on weapons to allow a characters' normal attacks to exploit an enemy's weakness to ice, or on armor to resist ice damage. When used on weapons, it is especially effective on Tifa and Cloud, who have very high strength attributes, particularly on enemies weak to ice but resistant to physical damage. On armor, it can be used well in combination with the Provoke Materia Provoke Materia to greatly resist ice attacks. This is ideal on Barret Wallace, who can sustain a lot of damage in battle, or against Shiva in Chadley's VR Missions. When used on a character's weapon, it takes on an ice visual; e.g. Cloud's sword will have ice crystals on the blade. This visual can be added to the enemies he strikes, as well.

The level of the player's best ice materia is assessed for Chocobo Sam's questline in Wall Market during "The Town That Never Sleeps". When Cloud and Johnny help the chef figure out which of his appliances is working sub-optimally, ice materia level matters for assessing the fridge.

In INTERmission, Yuffie can already deal ranged ice-elemental magical damage with her Elemental Ninjutsu without need for using magic. The ice materia may thus be better on Sonon Kusakabe, or when paired with Magnify Materia Magnify Materia or with elemental in armor.
