The Hypnocrown is a mid to high-ranked mystic headgear in Final Fantasy XII that boosts the wearer's Magick Resist by 44, Magick Power by 7, and—unusually for a mystic armor piece—Strength by 2. In the Zodiac versions, it also gives 75 MP.

Obtain[]

Original[]

In the original PlayStation 2 version, the Hypnocrown is sold for 8,100 gil in Archades and Balfonheim Port. The Hypnocrown rarely drops from Zombie Knight.

Zodiac[]

In the updated Zodiac versions, the Hypnocrown is sold for 8,100 gil in Balfonheim Port. It is a treasure in Feywood's Ice Field of Clearsight (75% chance to appear, 50% chance for gil, 50% chance the item treasure is the Hypnocrown without the Diamond Armlet equipped), and in Necrohol of Nabudis's Cloister of Distant Song (30% chance to appear, 30% chance for gil, 50% chance the item treasure is the Hypnocrown without the Diamond Armlet equipped). It still rarely drops from the Zombie Knight, and is now also the uncommon steal from Ahriman in Trial Mode Stage 29.

Use[]

Hypnocrown is a mid to high-ranked mystic hat, giving 44 Magick Resist, 7 Magick Power, and 2 Strength, as well as 75 MP in the Zodiac versions. Mystic armor offer magick-related bonuses that affect all types of magickal actions, from casting black magick to damage an enemy, to casting white magick to heal the party. Magick Power is also a factor when determining damage dealt by katana, staves, and maces. Usually only heavy armor offer Strength bonuses, and though spellcasters (or gun-users) don't need this stat, it would benefit a katana-wielder.

In the Zodiac versions, White Mage, Red Battlemage, Black Mage, and Bushi can equip it, and so the Hypnocrown is only useful to buy if the player has chosen any of these License Boards for their party. In The Zodiac Age versions, after fighting Belias the player can choose two License Boards per party member; it is usually a good idea to pair jobs that use two different types of armor for versatility. Due to its small boost to Strength, the hat would be especially suitable for the physically-attacking Bushi.

In the Zodiac versions, the Hypnocrown is a treasure in the Necrohol of Nabudis, so the player who ventures there early could score it much earlier than it is available from the shop, however, this is also the time the route to Nabreus Deadlands is open, from whose Dead Bones the player could procure the vastly superior Golden Skullcap, the second-best mystic hat in the game. However, both of these areas are optional to visit and thus possibly too tough for the party to brave as soon as the routes there are open (after the Tomb of Raithwall). In all versions, the crown is also a rare drop from the Zombie Knights in Sochen Cave Palace; in the original the player can just buy the hat from the next town, but in the Zodiac versions, it is only available from the next town over from there, and so it may be worthwhile trying to chain the zombies in the caves for use in the next dungeon: Draklor Laboratory.

Etymology[]

Hypnosis is a psychological state superficially resembling sleep marked by a functioning of the individual at a level of awareness other than the ordinary conscious state.
