The Hunt is a recurring activity in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn in which the player is tasked to hunt down and defeat particular powerful enemies in field areas. Originally introduced in patch 2.3, "Defenders of Eorzea", hunts must be unlocked through each expansion in specific quests tied to level and story progression. Hunts are issued by the three Grand Companies of the Eorzan Alliance in the center of Eorzea, by Clan Centurio in its outer reaches and the Far East, by Clan Nutsy in the First, by the gleaner's guildship in Sharlayan and the Near East, and the Dawnbright Coalition in Tural.
To participate in the Hunt, players must accept hunt bills pinned on specific noticeboards depending on the expansion: situated in their associated Grand Company headquarters for A Realm Reborn, outside the Forgotten Knight in Ishgard for Heavensward, in Rhalgr's Reach and outside the Shiokaze Hostelry in Kugane for Stormblood, near Temenos Rookery in the Crystarium and in the understory in Eulmore for Shadowbringers, near the peristyle in Old Sharlayan and at in Mehryde's Meyhane in Radz-at-Han for Endwalker, and near the Bayside Bevy marketplace in Tuliyollal for Dawntrail.
The creatures marked for the Hunt are referred to as "marks," with stronger marks being referred to as "elite marks". Elite marks further divide into 3 ranks: B, A, S. The higher the rank, the stronger the mark and the more rewards for the hunter. Regular marks are standard open world enemies, or occasionally FATE bosses for A Realm Reborn marks, and their bills are issued daily (real time) at hunt boards. B-rank elite marks can be found at any time, respawning almost instantly after being killed, but only a single bill is issued per-week and they offer no rewards for defeating them without a bill. A-rank and S-rank elite marks do not have bills associated with them and will always grant rewards upon defeat, but A-ranks have 4-6 hour respawn timers, while S-ranks take days to respawn and will only spawn under certain specific, often obscure and difficult to achieve, conditions.

Introduced in Shadowbringers and present there and in subsequent expansions, when a S-rank elite mark from any zone of a region is killed, there is a chance that a system message saying "The minions of an extraordinarily powerful mark are on the hunt for prey." will appear. With this four unique B-rank minions will spawn throughout the region. While these marks count towards B-rank achievements, their strength is more on par with A-ranks, leading to them informally being called "B+"-ranks by players. Upon killing the four B-ranks, another S-rank will spawn at a single designated point in the zone. This new S-rank is likewise much stronger than the typical S-rank, leading to the informal "SS"-rank. The B-ranks will despawn after 5 minutes if not engaged by players, or if their aggro resets (whether by being pulled too far from its spawn point or from all players engaged with it being defeated). If any B-rank despawns, all of the others will immediately despawn as well, preventing the S-rank from being spawned.
