Battle[]
Humbaba has enormous Strength and as soon as battle starts, it will buff with Mighty Guard. Mighty Guard is used again when Humbaba loses 66% of its HP, and it also uses Thundaga. Humbaba's Uppercut deals around 1,500 damage and carries a huge delay. Once Humbaba loses 66% of HP, it gains access to the Tyrant Tail attack, which hits the whole party for about 800 damage and has small delay effect. Swipe inflicts moderate damage of about 400 to one target. Once Humbaba is defeated, it will cast Meteor as a last resort to kill the party. Humbaba's attacks inflict delay.
Strategy[]
It is advisable to use Samurais and White Mages, and augment Defense. Dark Knights are not recommended as they can act so infrequently.
The party should use the Samurai's Fingersnap to clear off the Humbaba's stat boosts, while the White Mage's Dispel takes care of statuses Humbaba has gained from Mighty Guard. Humbaba's weakness is in the MP field, and if the player drains all of Humbaba's MP, they can stop it from using Mighty Guard as well as Thundaga. Once Humbaba has lost its MP, all that is left to worry about are Humbaba's physical attacks and Meteor.
Having fast characters is recommended as Humbaba's attacks inflict delay. It is recommended to apply Protect.
The only way to not see Humbaba's final attack, Meteor, is using eject techs or Telekinesis from Psychic dressphere on Humbaba (also the fastest way to win the battle). The player can also bribe it. Another option to survive Meteor is to finish the battle with a special dressphere or powerful captured creatures, but the player needs to set the Cheer Gauge to 3 stars or lower before downing Humbaba to reduce the damage from Meteor. The Dark Elemental is a suitable choice due to its innately high Magic Defense.

Fiend Arena[]
After winning Grand Cup: Hard three times, Humbaba will start to appear, as part of the Elephant Eater team. It behaves identically to its Thunder Plains/Via Infinito counterpart and is a good choice for having captured creatures learn their most powerful abilities or auto-abilities, such as Total Limit Break from Dolmen, provided they are at a high enough level.
Humbaba also appears in the Fiend World Cup.
Musical themes[]
Humbaba, along with Angra Mainyu and Anything Eater, are the only enemies to use the aeon-battle exclusive music piece known in Final Fantasy X-2 as "Aeons."

Etymology[]
Humbaba (Assyrian spelling) or Huwawa (Babylonian) was a monstrous giant of immemorial age raised by Utu, the Sun. Humbaba/Huwawa was also the guardian of the Cedar Forest where the gods lived. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh slays Humbaba for fame and glory.
