Hototogisu (不如帰, Hototogisu?), also known as Soundless Scream or Lesser Cuckoo, is a recurring weapon in the Final Fantasy series.

Soundless Scream is a weapon for Auron, obtainable when the dominant ability on any katana is Silencetouch.

Final Fantasy XI

Hototogisu is a katana that provides 24 damage, 185 delay, Accuracy +3, with a latent Parrying Skill +5 effect. Its latent effect is active while under the effect of a Song or Roll. It deals 7.78 damage per second and accumulates 51 TP per hit. It can be equipped by level Lv. 55 Ninja. It is dropped by Beryl-footed Molberry.

Etymology

[view · edit · purge]Hototogisu is the Japanese name for the bird lesser cuckoo. In Japan, the bird is praised for its song, and is seen as a sign of the coming of summer. Alternately, the hototogisu represents longing, loneliness, and nostalgia, especially for loved ones, and is the subject of a famous series of quotes reflective on the three famous shoguns of the Sengoku period: in the effort of getting the bird to sing, Oda Nobunaga wanted to kill it if it doesn't sing, Toyotomi Hideyoshi wanted to coax it to sing, and Tokugawa Ieyasu wanted to wait for it to sing.
