Holy hat.

Description

The Holy Miter is a light armor headgear in Final Fantasy IX. It is a late game hat for mages, and is their best stat-boosting headgear, giving bonuses to Magic and Spirit on level up. The Holy Miter teaches the passive abilities Body Temp and Insomniac, which inoculate against status ailments.

Obtain[]

ChocographLoc23

"Fairy Island" treasure.

The Holy Miter is earliest available from the "Fairy Island" chocograph when the player has a flying Choco. Choco can be made flying when the party has the Hilda Garde III by progressing in the Chocobo Hot and Cold. The treasure is on the slope of the pyramid-shaped peak on Vile Island; the player should be wary when going for it and not dismount carelessly as the island is habited by the toughest normal enemies in the game: Yans.

The Holy Miter is also found in Pandemonium, on the "throne" where Vivi and Eiko find Zidane at the very start of the dungeon crawl PandemoniumMindControl.

After the party returns from the events in Pandemonium, the Holy Miter is sold in Black Mage Village for 8,300 gil.

Mechanics[]

The Holy Miter provides 39 Magic Defense, mitigating damage from magic attacks. The miter gives bonuses to the wearer when they level up with it equipped: Magic +1 and Spirit +2. When enough "level up bonuses" from gear have been accrued, the character gains a permanent stat increase, though they would need to level up multiple times with +1 gear for noticeable stat gain. Magic stat is used for damage calculation for magic-based abilities and determines the character's MP growth. Spirit is used to determine expirable status effects' duration, the HP the character is revived at, the frequency Regen and Poison tick, and how fast Trance builds and runs out, among other things.

Use[]

The Holy Miter is late game gear and good to equip to mages if the player undertakes any late game level grinding, though doing this is unnecessary for normal playthrough; even the superbosses can be done with simply good gear and strategy and perhaps some luck. The immunity abilities it teaches are also good to master now if the party members have not yet mastered them, Body Temp protecting against Heat and Freeze, and Insomniac protecting against Sleep. Both are best to be kept active for the final battle.

If the player already has the abilities mastered and does not care about stat-boosting, then the mages can get the Golden Skullcap or the Circlet as their endgame headgear. As bosses do no yield EXP, a gear piece's stat boost is an inconsequential consideration for these battles.
