Causes holy damage.

Description

Holy is a White Magic spell in Final Fantasy V. Despite being a White Magic spell, it functions similarly to Black Magic spells: it deals holy-elemental damage to one target, and can be used as a Spellblade to grant holy-elemental damage. Holy can also be Dualcast if White Magic is equipped, and is one of the spells that can be cast for free from the Wonder Wand.

Holy is also an enemy ability that can be cast by Barrier, Enuo, Exdeath in the final battle, Famed Mimic Gogo, Halicarnassus, and Neo Exdeath.

Obtained[]

Holy is obtained in the physical side of the Fork Tower after defeating Minotaur. When Minotaur is defeated, he attempts to use the spell, but normally fails due to having no MP (unless the player used Ether on Minotaur first).

The player may also use Holy by catching and releasing a Mini Dragon, and by breaking a Staff of Light.

Mechanics[]

As a spell, Holy's damage is calculated as follows:

If the target absorbs holy, it is healed instead of damaged; if it is immune to holy, the attack misses. If the target resists holy, the Attack modifier in the formula is halved, but if it is weak to holy, the modifier is doubled and the attack ignores the target's Magic Defense. Holy is affected by reflect.

Several pieces of equipment increase the power of elemental attacks by 50%. The bonus is applied before subtracting the opponent's Magic Defense. The weapons that strengthen holy are Rune Chime and Sage Staff. The Mix Elemental Power amplifies all elements.

Use[]

Holy is an incredibly powerful and MP-efficient way to deal damage with a spell. Its damage surpasses Firaga, Blizzaga, and Thundaga, all while having a lower MP cost. However, unlike the former, Holy cannot be multi-targeted. While Holy's damage is lower than Flare, which is acquired at the same time and is non-elemental, it still has its advantages. Very few enemies resist or absorb the holy element and the spell power can be boosted with the right equipment, letting its damage stay competitive with Flare while costing half the MP. It is also beneficial in making the White Magic skillset a more useful slot by granting an offensive spell. Since Holy and Flare are single-target only, they fall short to summoning Leviathan or Bahamut against crowds of enemies.

Holy can also be used as a Spellblade, adding holy-elemental damage and increasing the blade's damage output. A Holy Spellblade has the chance to instantly kill any non-heavy enemy that is weak to holy, and if used against a heavy-type enemy, quadruples damage dealt and pierces their defenses.
