Refine High-Level Magic from other Magic
Description
High Mag-RF (high magic refiner) is a menu ability in Final Fantasy VIII that allows the player to create third tier spells from second tier spells; though the conversion rate is not amazing, third tier magic outclasses second tier magic outright. However, there are also often easier ways to get these spells. High Mag-RF could be seen as an upgrade to Quezacotl's Mid Mag-RF that makes second tier spells from first tier magic. High Mag-RF does not make ultimate tier spells.
Obtained[]
The Guardian Force Alexander learns High Mag-RF for 60 AP. Alexander is drawn from the boss at the end of the Battle of the Gardens segment, or from Catoblepas in the final dungeon. If the player removes High Mag-RF with Amnesia Greens, there is no way to get it back.
Mechanics[]
Using High Mag-RF in the Ability menu enables the player to make -ga spells as well as Tornado and Triple from their weaker variants. The resultant spells are allocated to any party member who has space in their Magic inventory.
Item | Refine Into |
---|---|
Fira | 5 = 1 Firaga |
Blizzara | 5 = 1 Blizzaga |
Thundara | 5 = 1 Thundaga |
Aero | 10 = 1 Tornado |
Cura | 5 = 1 Curaga |
Double | 10 = 1 Triple |
Use[]
High Mag-RF is better than Mid Mag-RF in that it is also able to upgrade Aero spells into Tornado and Doubles into Triples, whereas Mid Mag-RF only makes -ra spells. High Mag-RF does not make the highest tier of spells, however: Ultima, Meteor, Flare. Holy (the player needs Forbid Mag-RF from Bahamut).
Converting Doubles into Triples is possibly one of the better uses of High Mag-RF despite the poor 10:1 conversion ratio, as Triples are tough to come by and the enemy that has them in its draw list is fought on a timer. The player could draw Doubles from Grendels to make into Triples, though the player would need to draw 1000 Doubles to get 100 Triples in this manner; 300 per battle if every party member drew 100 of the spells.
High Mag-RF is generally useful throughout the whole game and worth mastering, but the player may find they have easier ways to get the spells, such as Tornadoes from Windmills and Thundagas from Dynamo Stones with T Mag-RF
