The '''Hellhound''', also known as the '''Cerebus''', is an enemy in the original ''[[Final Fantasy]]''. They appear as one of the most common enemies in the [[Gurgu Volcano]], often appearing with Gigas type monsters. Hellhounds are related as the guardians of hell, which are portrayed as big demon dogs, with supernatural size and high speed an strength. As "Hell" is often imagined as a fiery place, hellhounds are often related to fire. Cerebus may be a typo from Cerberus, the biggest Hellhound, guardian of the gate of hell, represented as a big demon dog with three heads and fiery eyes.

One thing to note is that, even if the GBA sprite looks as a red dog, the NES sprite portrays the Hellhound as a dog with a more human face, and horns instead of ears. Suggesting it is a dog from the depths of hell.

Etymology

A hellhound is a supernatural dog found in folklore. A wide variety of ominous or hellish supernatural dogs occur in mythologies around the world, similar to the ubiquitous dragon. Features that have been attributed to hellhounds include black fur, glowing red or sometimes glowing yellow eyes, super strength or speed, ghostly or phantom characteristics, and foul odor.

In cultures that associate the afterlife with fire, hellhounds may have fire-based abilities and appearance. They are often assigned to guard the entrances to the world of the dead, such as graveyards and burial grounds, or undertake other duties related to the afterlife or the supernatural, such as hunting lost souls or guarding a supernatural treasure. In European legends, seeing a hellhound or hearing it howl may be either an omen of death or even a cause of death.

In the NES version, the name CEREBUS is a contraction of "Cerberus". Cerberus is a three-headed dog that guards the underworld's gates in Greek mythology.
