Who dares to break the eternal seal?

Hecatoncheir

Hecatoncheir, also known as Hekaton, is a boss in Final Fantasy III. He is found in the Cave of Shadows, guarding the Fang of Earth. He attacks the party as a dark shadow. He mainly uses physical attacks until low on health, when he uses Quake. In the NES version, it is highly recommended to keep casting Curaga each turn to counter Hecatoncheir's high damage, and to use the strongest available attacks that the party has. Having a Dark Knight helps tremendously in this battle.

In the DS remake, Hecatoncheir is much easier as his damage output is much lower than in the NES version, though he now attacks twice per turn. The above strategy still works well here, though having a Scholar using attack items will make this battle end much faster.

Etymology

The Hecatoncheires were children of Gaia and Uranus who were thrown into Tartarus as soon as they were born. They were released by Zeus, and aided him in overthrowing Cronos. They were giants depicted with one hundred arms (and sometimes even fifty heads). The name (Εκατόγχειρες - Hecatonchires) is of Greek origin: Hecaton (εκατόν-) means one hundred and chires (-χείρες) means hands.
