Heavy Slash is a physical ability for Lightning in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. It is the strongest version of the physical "Attack" abilities, dealing heavy physical damage to a foe, but has a hefty ATB cost.

Obtained[]

Several garbs have access to Heavy Slash as their locked ability - the SOLDIER 1st Class has Heavy Slash Lv.2, the Dragon's Blood and Hunter of the Wild have Heavy Slash Lv.3, and Dark Muse+ has access to Heavy Slash Lv. 4.

Heavy Slash can also be obtained as a drop from the Anubys, Set, Gorgonopsid, and Gorgonopsid Ω enemies. The former three enemies all share a 15% drop rate, while the latter Gorgonopsid Ω has a 100% chance. The enemies drop the different levels of the ability on the following days and difficulties:

Enemy Lv. 1 Lv. 2 Lv. 3 Lv. 4 Lv. 5
Anubys Day 1 - 6 (Easy/Normal) Day 7 - 9 (Easy/Normal) Day 10 - 13 (Hard) Day 1 - 6 (Hard) Day 7 - 13 (Hard)

Mechanics[]

Fang using Heavy Slash from LRFFXIII

Fang using Heavy Slash.

Heavy Slash deals heavy physical non-elemental damage to a single target, functioning as a solo version of the normal Attack combo finisher. When performing the attack, it can temporarily interrupt a target, or sometimes launch them into the air. Against launched staggered enemies, Heavy Slash will occasionally change to Smite. The ability also significantly increases a target's Stagger Wave. Heavy Slash can be enhanced with En-spell effects.

By default, Heavy Slash has an ATB cost of 50, an attack power of 2.00, a Stagger Power of B, and a Stagger Time of B. When fully upgraded, Heavy Slash Lv.5 can have an ATB cost of 35, an attack power of 12.00, a Stagger Power of B, and a Stagger Time of B.

Fang also uses Heavy Slash against staggered opponents when she is a guest party member.

Alternate forms[]

Artemis Arrow from LRFFXIII
Slayer from LRFFXIII

Lightning using Artemis's Arrows and Slayer.

Some garbs have passives and locked abilities that add effects to Heavy Slash in combat. The Soldier of Peace has access to the Artemis's Arrows passive, causing any Heavy Slash equipped to garb to change into the Artemis's Arrows ability in combat, multiplying the damage dealt by the replaced Heavy Slash by 2.5, but at the cost of a large damage variance (50%). The SOLDIER 1st Class's locked Heavy Slash has the Slayer trait, causing the command to temporarily become Slayer when a foe is staggered, changing its animation and dealing extra damage.
