Hashmal is an Esper in Final Fantasy XII fought in the Pharos. He is one of the few Espers acquired during the storyline, as he needs to be fought to ascend further into the Pharos. The battle was changed from the original Japanese version to the international and later versions; their stats are the same, but they use different abilities.

He is also fought in the Zodiac versions' Trial Mode at Stage 49 along with two Reavers. In this battle the player can steal Elixir (uncommon) and Ribbon (rare) from him.

Battle[]

Hashmal uses Roxxor on single targets and Quakeja, which hits the party hard and inflicts Petrify. Hashmal's standard attacks can deal a lot damage as well and inflict Disease. In the original Japanese version, Hashmal cannot combo, but can become invincible to damage and uses Roxxor and Quakeja more often. Hashmal is weak to wind.

Strategy[]

Roxxor and Quakeja are nullified by the Float spell. The player can also use Float Motes or Winged Boots. Using Haste on the party, or equipping the Hermes Sandals, aids in keeping up with Hashmal's attacks, while Protect provides physical protection.

Disease can be cured with Serums (Vaccine in the original version), the Cleanse spell, and with Remedies once the appropriate Remedy Lores have been unlocked on the License Board. Being under the Bubble status makes one immune to Disease, with the Bubble Belt granting permanent protection from it.

Means to deal wind damage can be good, like Chaos, Aeroga with the Cherry Staff, and the Windslicer Shot.

Etymology[]

Hashmal's attack, Roxxor, is called "Rock You" in the Japanese version, plus some some other translations, such as the Italian translation. This is a nod towards the band Queen; one of game director Yasumi Matsuno's trademarks is to pay homage to the rock band Queen in his works.[1]

Rock You has been changed to Roxxor in the English localization, a likely play on internet slang.
