FFV halicarnassus sprite

Halicarnassus, also known as Halicarnaso, Halikarnassos, Halycanos, or Harikalnasson, is a boss and one of the Demons of the Rift in Final Fantasy V. Though referred to as "king" in in-game dialogue, his other appearances depict Halicarnassus as feminine.

Halicarnassus is the self-proclaimed master of illusions and king of Dimension Castle. He poses as a helpless damsel captured by Catastrophe. After the heroes defeat the monster, Halicarnassus gives Bartz the kiss of death and scurries off. Later, he approaches the heroes once more and reveals his true form.

Stats

Battle

Halicarnassus will begin the battle by laughing and turning the party into frogs. When he starts powering up, he will hit for massive damage and probably KO one party member. Otherwise, his normal hits are not nearly as devastating. Halicarnassus has some powerful spells under his belt, such as Holy. The longer the battle is, the harder it becomes, as he tends to dwindle down the party's HP quickly.

Strategy

Having as many Ribbons on the party as possible is the best way to go about defeating him. Another way is to start the battle as frogs, meaning Halicarnassus turns the entire party back to normal.

The best strategy is to strike his with the party's most effective blows and take him out as fast as possible.

Other appearances

Final Fantasy XIV

FFXIV Halicarnassus

In Final Fantasy XIV, Halicarnassus appears as one of Omega's fabricated creations in the Deltascape v3.0 duty. In this incarnation, she appears as a woman. Throughout the fight, she manipulates her arena into several different forms, forcing the party into specific segments of the arena in order to avoid damage. She also summons several other creatures -- such as a Great Dragon and several Troubadours -- to attack the party. In addition, she makes a habit of using several Spellblade elemental attacks that the party must avoid and attempting to turn the party into frogs. When defeated, Halicarnassus is subsequently deleted by Omega. In the savage version of Deltascape v3.0, Halicarnassus' arena mechanics become increasingly complex, demanding coordinated group positioning to avoid instantly KO'ing party members. She also frequently uses Critical Hit, a heavy-hitting tank buster. In this fight, she also attempts to turn the party into pigs and imps and summons Apanda, White Flame, Iron Giant and several Ninja. If Halicarnassus is not defeated in about 11 minutes, she will instantly KO the entire party.

Etymology

Halicarnassus was an ancient Greek city at the site of modern Bodrum in Turkey. It was located in southwest Caria on a picturesque, advantageous site on the Ceramic Gulf. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus was considered one of the wonders of the ancient world. It was built for the Carian King, Mausolus, thus spawning the English word "mausoleum".

Trivia

  • In the RPGe translation, contrary to his enemy name of "Halicarnaso", he calls himself "Halikarnassos" before the battle. Equally, in the Anthology version, despite the enemy name of "Halycanos", he calls himself "Harikalnasson".
