Halicarnassus is one of the Demons of the Rift fought as a boss in the Interdimensional Rift. He is the self-proclaimed master of illusions and king of Dimension Castle. He poses as a helpless damsel captured by Catastrophe. After the heroes defeat the monster, Halicarnassus gives Bartz Klauser the kiss of death and scurries off. Later, he approaches the heroes once more and reveals his true form.

Halicarnassus can also be fought in the Cloister of the Dead in the Advance and Matrix Software versions.

Final Fantasy XIV[]

Two distinct entities named Halicarnassus can be encountered. The first is a voidsent succubus encountered as the final boss of Haukke Manor (Hard) Haukke Manor (Hard). This Halicarnassus was the leader of the voidsent summoned into the manor by Lady Amandine Dartancours. As voidsent are reticent to give their true names, Amandine named the succubus Halicarnassus after a villainess from an ancient fable. After Amandine's death at the hands of the Warrior of Light, Halicarnassus and her minions overran the manner, massacring the Wood Wailers that had been sent to secure it, before themselves being defeated by the Warrior.

The Halicarnassus of fable after whom the succubus was named later appears as a boss in Deltascape V3 Deltascape V3.0, where she was a simulacrum created by Omega to test of the strength of the Warrior of Light. Owing to the robotic Omega's literal lack of imagination, it pulled figures from literature and myth for its trials. Based on the Final Fantasy V Halicarnassus, this incarnation was said to be the "Queen of Dimension Castle" who was eventually defeated by a band of valiant youths, with the tale potentially being based on actual events which occurred in the long-past Fourth Astral Era.

Etymology[]

Halicarnassus was an ancient Greek city at the site of modern Bodrum in Turkey. It was located in southwest Caria on a picturesque, advantageous site on the Ceramic Gulf. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus was considered one of the wonders of the ancient world. It was built for the Carian King, Mausolus, thus spawning the English word "mausoleum".
