Use[]

The HP Up materia provides a percentage boost to a character's HP. Multiple HP Up materia can be equipped at once to boost up to 100% of a character's base HP. The materia can greatly boost a character's durability, meaning it is common to equip multiple on all characters, especially in hard mode.

HP Up can be prioritized on Barret if used in conjunction with his Lifesaver ability. Barret has the highest base HP and Lifesaver allows him to tank damage away from the other party members. This means Barret can absorb most of the damage while still having solid HP himself. As HP Up materia is percentage-based, Barret will also gain the most out of using the materia at lower levels. Barret can also use the Provoke Materia Provoke Materia to further draw fire his way.

Below Barret, HP Up should be prioritized on Tifa or Aerith, who have the second-lowest and lowest HP in the game, respectively. Their survivability is based more on their mobility than their ability to sustain damage, as their low HP makes them fragile. Equipping the materia can help mitigate this problem and improve their survivability. Cloud benefits from HP Up materia for much the same reason as Tifa, as he is a melee character who will need to confront enemies upfront to deal damage, putting himself in harm's way. However, Cloud has the second-highest HP, and is less of a priority.

In "Episode INTERmission", Yuffie can deal both physical and magical damage with the normal attack command, and change her elemental affinity on the fly with Elemental Ninjutsu. Therefore, she does not need to carry so many Magic Materia Magic Materia, leaving more room for supportive materia in her arsenal, such as HP Up. For the superboss challenges in hard mode, it is useful to have multiple maxed out HP Ups on both Yuffie and Sonon. A good way to quickly level hem up is with Volant Armlet and taking on the easy challenges in the Shinra Combat Simulator repeatedly.
