Guildivain Sailmet also known as Faldrinet, is a non-player character in Final Fantasy XIV, and is the main antagonist of the Sage questline.
History[]
Early life[]
Faldrinet studied the art of somonautics and became a Sage eventually falling in love with the Viera woman known as Hatia, another Sage from Psysis Technon. Eventually over time his lover became ill from an incurable disease and died within a week. Wracked with grief, Faldrinet fell to madness seeking ways to enhance and cure all illnesses through any means necessary. He used human test subjects in a procedure sought to enhance the body in order to cure them of their illness. Unfortunately, many lost their lives and those that live suffered through the symptoms of the enhancements and the mental trauma of being the only survivors. Rumors abound of his experiments, and he covered up his tracks in Sharlayan before heading off to Eorzea.
Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker[]
Faldrinet traveled to the town of Idyllshire, where he sought to obtain some muscmaloi from Saint Mocianne's Arboretum before he was cornered by Loifa, Ancel, and Mahaud. Before his attackers could do any harm, he dodges one of Loifa's spells, and before Mahaud could hit him with a more potent spell, the Warrior of Light jumps in front of him but is protected by Loifa with Haima. Afterwards Ancel states that there are too many prying eyes and teleports away, threatening them to not get in their way again. They aid the man, learning that his name is Faldrinet from Sharlayan, traveling the realm to heal those in need with the sage art. Lalah questions him to investigate what his attackers motives are and where they planned to head next, learning that they are going to Saint Mocianne's Arboretum for certain herbs. Faldrinet notices the Warrior is a sage not from Sharlayan, and after being told they were chosen by the crystal he is at a loss for words, knowing that the crystal belonged to his former lover. He denies something is amiss and states he will once again travel the realm.[1]
Faldrinet travels to Central Thanalan to meet with an apothecary for the herbs instead, but during his transaction Loifa and the others appear to attack him once more. Before anything happens, Lalah and the Warrior show up once again stepping in. Loifa states how he regrets sparing the adventurers life and Lalah questions why they would do such things against good natured souls. Loifa states that they are just fools believing whatever they're told, and he asks Faldrinet about the weight of his sins. Faldrinet states how he fights against the fate of unfortunate souls dying without reason and he fights against this injustice. Loifa enlarges an Antling, as it approaches to attack Faldrinet, he provokes Ancel, causing Loifa's compatriots to lose control and fall to the ground. Faldrinet lures the Antling away and Lalah stays behind to handle the current situation while the adventurer assists Faldrinet.[2]
Following the defeat of the Antling, they notice that the fugitive's condition hasn't changed, and Lalah worries about their symptoms, noting that it's from the enhancement, knowing of the forbidden procedure and the harm it causes. She states that living beings have a limit of corporeal aether, and that forcibly fortifying it causes complications, and that a rogue healer used this on countless people and that rumors of this happening were denounced by the Forum. Loifa states how naive they are before preparing to leave, the apothecary tells them to wait, realizing that the two with the enhancement; Mahaud and Ancel, are her children that she hasn't seen in years. They teleport away and the apothecary reveals that they were her adopted children with Mahaud sick from aetherspurn, an incurable illness where the body doesn't retrieve aether from food, and Mahaud who was attacked by a beast and was to be bedridden forever. The Apothecary retells how she was met by a healer who stated that it would take years to heal their grievances, in desperation she let him leave with her children. She reveals to them that the man's name was Guildivain, a healer from Sharlayan. Faldrinet interrupts stating how touching a tale it is and leaves.[2]
Loifa, Ancel, and Mahaud attempt to find Faldrinet at the meeting spot of his merchant in Aleport. As they confronted him, Ancel and Mahaud protected Loifa from a magic attack, but Loifa was left unconscious, and Faldrinet kidnapped the other two.[3]
Faldrinet takes them to a hidden cave in the Dravanian Forelands, where he controls them with his spell Craniotomy. Once Loifa, the Warrior and Lalah confront him, he states how he believes the loss of life is necessary for the furtherment of mankind, and how invaluable a specimen Loifa is. He states that they can be of worth to him as a test of their strength and has Mahaud and Ancel fight for him. As they become weaker during their battle, Faldrinet finds their limits disappointing and hopes one of them can take them out. Once they are defeated and Loifa rushes to their aid, Faldrinet comes from the shadows and sends a spell his way as he is distracted. The spell is blocked by a Haima spell from the Warrior, and they all come together to face him. He laughs about how marvelous the situation is, telling them to come and transcend the limits of their flesh together before injecting himself with a serum and changing into a powerful monster. [4]
During his fight he becomes madder, even talking to Hatia about her successor's abilities. He uses Craniotomy on them, causing Lalah, Ancel, and Mahaud to become mind controlled, while the other two are safe. He is intrigued by this but continues to taunt them telling them to hurry or their friends' brains will melt. In the end he is defeated, and is spared by Loifa, who decides he must be put on trial for his crimes as he mumbles about how marvelous this experiment was to his deceased lover. He is then taken into custody by Lalah and is handed over to Sharlayan authorities, where he awaits trial.[4]
