Profile

Appearance

In a manner similar to his son, Vincent, Grimoire had an incredibly tall, imposing figure. He also had pale skin, which served to accent his jet-black hair and crimson eyes, the latter of which were noted by Lucrecia (to Vincent) as being exactly like those his of son. Overall, Grimoire bore a striking resemblance to Vincent.

Grimoire's attire consisted of dark grey clothing, which was segmented in numerous joint sections by black leather straps with silver clips, as well as light brown boots. Draped over his shoulders was a magnificent black leather overcoat, while on his right thigh, he bore an accessory (presumably a gun holster) secured by light brown straps. Grimoire's red ascot was specifically designed to be reminiscent of his son's red bandanna, as well as add a bit of flair to his otherwise drab appearance.

Personality

In Lucrecia Crescent's flashbacks, Grimoire was shown to have a calm demeanor - yet another trait he passed on to his son - and appeared to be a patient man, as when Lucrecia excitedly ran towards the fountain in the grotto where Chaos was destined to awaken, he jokingly assured her that it wasn't going anywhere, and when Lucrecia was analyzing an orb of dark matter (presumably Chaos), he questioned whether she thought she was taking things a little too quickly, and finally, responding to her desire to prove those at Shin-Ra who laughed her, wrong, that "rushing into matters will get [her] nowhere" - a sharp contrast to Lucrecia's energetic personality. He also appeared to be quite selfless, as seen when he protected Lucrecia in a lab accident; though this selfless act cost him his life. In his final moments, Grimoire was shown to have a spiritual side to him, as he calmly accepted the fact that his body would be reabsorbed into the Lifestream upon his death. He also apparently cared deeply for his son, and he gently ordered Lucrecia to pass on his last wishes to Vincent.

Story

Grimoire worked on the discovery of Chaos and Omega with Lucrecia Crescent, who was his assistant. It is said that he found a Cetran tablet, which spoke of Omega and Chaos, and was the one to write the first Omega Reports. He located the grotto where Chaos was destined to awaken, alongside Lucrecia. Unfortunately, Grimoire was killed when an experiment during his research went wrong and he shielded Lucrecia from the blast.

The Omega Reports, written by Grimoire and Lucrecia, make evident how long their research of Chaos and Omega was. The reports show the hypothesis that Dr. Valentine and his colleagues made during the research, and states that Grimoire was the one to discover the spring where Omega was to be born. Report number 6, written by Lucrecia, says "The doctor believes the crystalline spring contains contaminated deposits of bioplasma that have overflown from the pure Lifestream". The Omega reports mention the Protomateria, a one-of-a-kind materia found in the Crystal Cavern, that was supposedly created by the dark Lifestream.

Having been part of the events that lead to Grimoire's death made Lucrecia feel guilty, and she distanced herself from Vincent. During the discovery of Chaos and Omega, Grimoire and his team stumbled upon a stagnation of Lifestream onsite. Scientists took this information and took the stagnation and put it into children about to be born, but did not know how it was going to turn out; even though they did hundreds of experiments, there was only one experiment that was successful: Nero the Sable.

Not much is known of the relationship Grimoire had with his son, Vincent, but Grimoire's last words to Lucrecia were, "Tell my son, that I'm... sorry."

Etymology

A grimoire is a textbook of magic. Such books typically include instructions on how to create magical objects like talismans and amulets, how to perform magical spells, charms and divination and also how to summon or invoke supernatural entities such as angels, spirits, and demons.

"Valentine" is a primarily masculine given name derived from the Roman family name Valentinus, which was derived from the Latin word valens, which means "strong and healthy". Saint Valentine was also a third-century Roman saint, commemorated in western Christianity on February 14.
