The Green Beret is a mid-ranked light armor headgear in Final Fantasy XII that boosts the wearer's magickal defense by 16, HP by 130, and Speed by 3. It can thus be a good headgear for those who use weapons that take the wielder's Speed stat into account: bows and daggers and ninja swords. However, a helm that boosts Strength likely has a bigger impact on the damage dealt.

Obtain[]

Original[]

In the original PlayStation 2 versions, the Green Beret is sold for 1,900 gil in Rabanastre after defeating Belias, and in Jahara. It rarely drops from the Hyenas in rainy Giza Plains.

Zodiac[]

In the updated Zodiac versions, the Green Beret is sold for 1,900 gil in Jahara and Mt Bur-Omisace. It is found in a treasure in the rainy Giza Plains' Warrior's Wash (80% chance to appear, 35% chance for gil, 50% chance the item treasure is the Green Beret without the Diamond Armlet equipped), and the Ozmone Plain's The Shred (80% chance to appear, 25% chance for gil, 50% chance the item treasure is the Green Beret without the Diamond Armlet equipped), as well as in the Trial Mode Stage 51 with the Diamond Armlet equipped.

It still rarely drops from the Hyena in the rainy Giza Plains.

Use[]

The Green Beret is a mid ranked light armor hat, giving 16 magick resist and 130 HP, as well as 3 Speed. It is useful to equip over any inferior equipment the party may have. However, in the original version where everyone can wear any equipment piece, the more expensive heavy armor helm, Golden Helm, or the mystic hat Lambent Hat, may be preferable purchases if the player can stretch their funds to them, as the HP boost from light armor is not usually worth prioritizing over heavy armor that boosts Strength for physical attackers, or mystic armor that boosts Magick Power for spellcasters. Though the Green Beret boosts Speed, its effect is minimal, and even those whose weapons take the wielder's Speed stat into account benefit more from the Strength-boosting heavy armor helms.

In the Zodiac versions, Machinist, Monk, Archer, and Shikari can equip the Green Beret, and so it is only useful to buy if the player has chosen these License Boards for their party. In The Zodiac Age, after fighting Belias, the player can choose two License Boards per party member, and so more party members can choose from the potentially more useful heavy and mystic armor sets.

The Officer's Hat is a superior piece of light armor headgear that also boosts the wearer's Speed and could be available at the same time as the Green Beret, though as a rare steal from the Silicon Tortoises and thus much less readily available; however, procuring an Officer's Hat early would let the player skip quite a few "sets" of light armor headgear in favor of it.

Etymology[]

Green beret is one color of the military beret and has been a component of the uniforms of many armed forces throughout the world since the mid-20th century. Military berets are usually pushed to the right to free the shoulder that bears the rifle on most soldiers, but the armies of some countries, mostly Europe, South America and Iran have influenced the push to the left. It is also the official headdress of the British Commandos of the Second World War.

The green beret is also famously worn by members of the United States Army Special Forces, and is hence the colloquial name of the military unit.
