Grass area usually covers the bulk of the [[world map]] in most maps of the game, and always being the main terrain in the first world map of a game that has multiple maps. Grass is usually the only terrain where [[Airship (term)|airships]] can land. Due to this, some areas do not use grass to prevent access until later areas of the game where other methods of transport become open to the player.

The [[Cactus Island]] has a patch of grass for the ''Highwind'' to land on, as does [[Chocobo Sage]]'s house.

Areas notable for a lack of grass are the tropical areas of [[Mideel Area]] and [[Gongaga Area]], the barren surroundings of [[Midgar Area]], the mountainous zones of [[Wutai Area]], [[Cosmo Area]], and [[Icicle Area]], as well as the remaining [[Materia Cave]]s, including the entirety of [[Round Island]]. Also, the grass area around [[??? (Final Fantasy VII field)|???]] is not large enough for the ''Highwind'' to land. The [[North Corel Area]] contains one small area with grass too small to land the ''Highwind'' on, and is also special because no [[Final Fantasy VII battle system#Random encounters|encounters]] can be fought on it.

Due to grass being the main terrain used in the world map, enemies have few defining characteristics.

Many islands around are grassy, however, including the [[Island Closest to Heaven|Islands Closest to Heaven]] and [[Island Closest to Hell|Hell]]. [[Trabia]] continent and Winter Island are mainly snowfield terrain, but have some patches of exposed tundra.
