A memory module containing the data of a demon capable of terrible ferocity. Used with a chthonian armlet.

Description

Gozu Drive is an accessory in "Episode INTERmission" in Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade that is only active when the equipper also has the chthonian armlet. With this set-up, the wearer deals a flat amount of bonus damage added onto abilities that expend ATB, the bonus depending on the character's current HP. Gozu drive is the antithesis to the Mezu drive, which, when coupled with chthonian armlet, has the wearer deal more damage the lower MP the wearer has.

Obtained[]

Gozu drive is obtained for defeating the Horned Cripshay mini boss in Sector 7 Slums' Shipping Facility during "Double Back" main quest in Chapter 1, "Wutai's Finest".

Use[]

Chthonian Armlet with Gozu Drive from FFVIIR INTERmission

Chthonian Armlet active with Gozu Drive.

Chthonian armlet + a drive is the best way to boost character's damage, making it great for Yuffie. The armlet is obtained from defeating the Corneo Lackeys in "The Handoff". When used with Gozu drive, the equipper deals 10% of their current health as bonus damage; e.g. if the wearer had 4000 HP, they would do +400 damage with their ATB ability. It appears to add a flat amount of bonus damage on top of the damage the character is already dealing based on the attacker's health, not the ability they use. The idea is to repeatedly use the character's highest-damage single ATB ability to rack up damage; Yuffie's ranged Windstorm is optimal for this as it goes off instantly. This is even better with Haste Haste.

The equipper will never do less damage than they would if they did not have the chthonian armlet+drive equipped; the added damage is simply a bonus. The damage boost depends on the wearer's current health, not a percentage of their max health, and thus equipping HP Up Materia HP Up Materia allows for a larger bonus; the fully upgraded File:Yuffie shuriken from FFVII Remake icon.png Cacstar also gives 1000 HP. This makes the gozu drive with a chthonian armlet a great equipment setup for the hardest challenges, such as "Top Secrets" gauntlet and the final boss in hard mode.

Etymology[]

Ox-Head and Horse-Face are two guardians of the underworld in Chinese Buddhist mythology, called Gozu and Mezu in Japanese folklore. Both have the muscular bodies of men but heads of animals, giving them a monstrous appearance akin to oni. They are considered the close assistants of Yama, the Judge of the Dead, and whose duties range from being the first entities a dead soul would encounter upon entering the underworld to returning lost souls and hunting those who dare escape the judgment of the underworld.

The name thus complements that of chthonian armlet. The word chthonic or chthonian means "subterranean", and is used to describe deities of the underworld, or monstrous beings of primordial chaos, especially in the Ancient Greek religion. It is derived from the Ancient Greek word χθών (khthṓn) which means "ground", "soil", or "earth".
