Goddess's Magicite is an accessory in Final Fantasy XII that boosts the wearer's Magick Resist at the cost of reducing their MP to 0, and in the Zodiac versions, prevents the player's Mist Gauge from rising, making the wearer unable to use magicks, Quickenings or Espers. The item is known in the story as the Dusk Shard, a covered piece of deifacted nethicite.

Obtain[]

In all versions, Vaan finds the Goddess's Magicite in the Royal Palace of Rabanastre treasury as part of the story. It appears in some cutscenes from there on and the player can equip the accessory onto anyone to boost their Magick Resist, at the cost of dropping their MP and Mist Gauges to 0. The magicite is lost when the player visits Dreadnought Leviathan as part of the story. In the original PlayStation 2 versions, the player can't then get it again, though the Dawn Shard obtained soon after has a similar yet better effect. However, in the Zodiac versions, the player can procure another Goddess's Magicite from the Trial Mode by stealing from Belias in Stage 10 (3%).

Use[]

A piece of magicite you found in the treasury of the Royal Palace of Rabanastre. It must be extremely valuable.

Description

The Goddess's Magicite, though usable as an accessory, is more of a story item as though the Magick Resist +13 is a good boost, the permanent 0-MP status it confers is a large handicap, disabling magick-use, Quickenings and Espers. While the Goddess's Magicite is equipped, nothing will restore the wearer's MP except removing the magicite.

In the Zodiac versions it is more usable, as the job system has jobs that learn almost no magick, anyway. It could be good against enemies that use a lot of magick, especially when coupled with Shell, and the wearer can still use items to compensate for their inability to use magick. However, the inability to partake in Quickening chains is a big downside. The nethicite is only available to equip a limited amount of time unless the player gets it back from the Trial Mode; in The Zodiac Age versions, the player can also bring their spoils from the trials to the main game. The Dawn Shard accessory has a similar yet superior effect to the Goddess's Magicite and the player can keep it until almost the end of the game.

Etymology[]

The nethicite is called such for being discovered inside a goddess statue in the royal treasury, and possibly for its supposedly divine origin, the Dynast-King having had the gods' blessing to come about the pieces of nethicite he possessed.

Magicite is the combination of "Magic" and "-ite". The suffix ite is derived from the Greek word lithos (from its adjectival form -ites), meaning "rock" or "stone".
