The Ghost (ゴースト, Gōsuto?) is a recurring creature in the Final Fantasy series, debuting in the original Final Fantasy. They are undead creatures typically capable of casting magic.
Appearances[]
Final Fantasy[]
The Ghost, also known as the GHOST, appears as an enemy encountered in the Sunken Shrine. It possesses the highest attack stat of all regular enemies in the dungeon and appears in groups, making it a dangerous foe.
Final Fantasy II[]
The Ghost appears as an enemy encountered in the Mysidia area, as well as within the Cave of Mysidia and the Mysidian Tower. It stands out from other Ghosts in the series for appearing more like a skeleton than a ghost.
Final Fantasy VI[]
The Ghost appears as an enemy encountered on the Phantom Train. It likes to use Fire elemental attacks, as well as its special attack Time Freeze, which inflicts Stop on one character. It is weak to Holy elemental attacks, so the fastest way to take it out is using Sabin's Aura Cannon, though they are not particularly difficult to defeat with regular attacks.
Final Fantasy VII[]
The Ghost appears as an enemy encountered in the Train Graveyard and in the Battle Square. It yields the rare Ghost Hand item. Whenever any action is performed on it, it will vanish for a limited time, in which the player will be unable to harm it. It can cast Drain and attack physically, but its Fire spell is the most powerful move it has. Using Fire against it is the quickest way to defeat it.
Final Fantasy VII Remake[]
The Ghost appears as an enemy encountered in the Train Graveyard in Chapter 11, "Haunted". Ghosts are the spirits of the children taken by Eligor, and Aerith Gainsborough can converse with them.
Final Fantasy IX[]
The Ghost appears an enemy encountered in the underground area of Dali, and is a powerful enemy that uses various elemental spells. Being an undead, using healing items and spells like Cure on it is the fastest way of taking it out. Also, being undead, it is vulnerable to the Fire element, so using Vivi's Black Magic and later on Steiner's Magic Sword with a Fire-type spell loaded into it, is an effective way of taking it out.
There is also a friendly Ghost that appears near Treno on Bentini Heights. Giving an Ore to the friendly Ghost rewards the party with a Hi-Potion and 10 AP.
Final Fantasy X[]
The Ghost appears as an enemy encountered in the Cavern of the Stolen Fayth, and will always open up the battle with the Doom spell, which Kimahri can learn as a Ronso Rage. It is best to use physical attacks or non-elemental attacks to defeat it, as it changes its elemental weakness from battle to battle. Having elemental absorbing abilities makes killing them easier, as they only use elemental spells after casting Doom.
When encountering a Ghost for the first time, Yuna may remark on how they are people that have been sent, but didn't make it to the Farplane due to their emotional ties with Spira being too strong, therefore becoming a fiend.
Final Fantasy XI[]
The Ghost appears as a family of undead enemies, typically weak against Light and Fire. The common Ghost is a level 15-17 enemy that appears at night in La Theine Plateau, Konschtat Highlands, and Tahrongi Canyon.
Final Fantasy XII[]
The Ghost is an enemy encountered in the Garamsythe Waterway while it is flooded.
Fortress[]
The Ghost from Final Fantasy XII can be seen in concept art for this cancelled spinoff.
Final Fantasy XIV[]
The Ghost, more commonly known as bogies or revenants, appears as a common family of ashkin that appear predominantly in A Realm Reborn areas. They can drain MP or inflict Silence with their signature Curse and Malice abilities, making them a particular danger for spellcasters.
Another enemy called Ghost appears in Sigmascape V1.0 as part of the Phantom Train encounter, based on its appearance in Final Fantasy VI. Despite its name, this "ghost" is instead a member of the wraith family.
Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift[]
The Ghost appears as an enemy that can float above ground and can warp around the battlefield, thus making it vary agile. Once "killed," it will automatically revive after three turns unless the battle is won or the party uses an ability capable of permanently removing it from the battle.
Vagrant Story[]
The Ghost appears as an enemy encountered in the Catacombs and the Sanctum.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles[]
The Ghost appears as an enemy encountered in the Goblin Wall and Rebena Te Ra. It is invulnerable until hit by Holy.
Crystal Defenders[]
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest[]
The Ghost appears as an enemy encountered in the Volcano.
Final Fantasy Adventure[]
The Ghost appears as an enemy encountered within the Glaive Castle, Glaive's Airship, and Mt. Rocks. They have a chance of inflicting Dark per hit, they also can drop Ether or Wisdom.
The Final Fantasy Legend[]
The Ghost appears as a potential transformation for the party's monster units. It cannot be fought, and requires that the monster eats one of the final fiends' meats to reach Level 14 first.
Final Fantasy Legend II[]
The Ghost appears as a potential transformation for the party's monster units. It does not appear as a normal enemy.

Etymology[]
ghost is the soul or spirit of a deceased person or animal that can appear, in visible form or other manifestation, to the living. Ghosts are generally described as solitary essences that haunt particular locations, objects, or people they were associated with in life, though stories of phantom armies, ghost trains, phantom ships, and even ghost animals have also been recounted.
