Gesper (ゲスパー, Gesupā?) is a recurring enemy in the Final Fantasy series, first appearing in Final Fantasy VIII.

Appearances[edit | edit source]

Final Fantasy VIII[edit | edit source]

Gesper is an enemy fought at Centra Excavation Site and Lunatic Pandora during the dream sequence. It is normally not a big threat to the party as it can also attack its own allies, until it uses its Degenerator ability, which can instantly kill and Eject one party member from the battle. It can drop the Black Hole item to teach Degenerator to Quistis.

A failed Esthar soldier. It attacks foes and allies alike and thus is shunned for being a hazard on the battlefield. It appears almost comic, but its attacks are not: Degenerator will leave no trace that you ever existed.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

The name for this enemy likely derives from "esper" in reference to its telekinesis. In fiction, an esper (stylized as ESPer) is an individual capable of telepathy and other similar paranormal abilities. The term was apparently coined in this sense by Alfred Bester in his 1950 short story "Oddy and Id" and is derived from the abbreviation ESP for extrasensory perception.

The "G" may be in reference to gravity since it uses the Degenerator attack and drops the Black Hole item.
