Abandoned by his father soon after his birth. As he grew up in the Veldt surrounded by monsters, he is not so good with words, but has a friendly disposition. Encountered Sabin and the others on their journey, and joined the party after receiving some dried meat. Uses monster abilities in battle.

Description

Gau is a playable character in Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia who can be recruited during the Lost Chapter Wild Child of the Veldt.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

Gau has green hair cut into spikes across the top and tied into a ponytail at the back, as well as red eyes. He wears a yellow spotted cloak with fringes, fashioned from animal hide, over his upper torso, which is clasped with an ornament at the front. He also wears a pair of green knee-length trousers with a floral pattern, tied with a fabric belt that holds a small pouch behind his left hip. Four metal bracers with fabric accents can be seen as well, one on each limb.

Gau's nails are long, made to resemble the claws of a quadrupedal animal, though he is able to equip monk claws and use them to enhance his strikes (unlike in the original Final Fantasy VI where he could equip naught but a shield without help from relics). He fights from a hunched stance, not unlike that of a large cat as it readies itself to attack its prey.

His profile artwork has him on all fours, but he is shown standing straight in cutscenes.

Personality[]

Gau retains many traits of his original appearance. Though good-natured by and large, he has a rather uncultured way of communicating with others, interspersing grunts, growls, howls, and the occasional "Gau" into his dialogue. This tends to confuse those unfamiliar with his beastly mannerisms. More so than a typical boy his age, Gau expresses a feeling of near-constant hunger; the lack of food in the world of the gods serves to amplify his feral qualities. His poor short-term memory contributed to getting himself lost; and yet his survival instinct bought him enough time to meet with the others.

As a warrior, Gau is fierce and unrestrained, and so defends his territory and later his allies using his animal instincts.

Story[]

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. (Skip section)

Gau stumbles into the world of the gods, summoned by Materia to assist the others, but finds himself confused and utterly ravenous when he arrives. As a result, his savage instincts overwhelm him, and he must defend his territory against "shiny things". Mog's gang has an unfortunate run-in with the feral youth when he charges at them and attacks, for he believes them to be fakes.

After the sparring match, the troupe is left bewildered as to what Gau might be trying to tell them about his circumstances. Fortunately, Sabin arrives with some Dried Meat to help the boy. Hunger soon strikes the group as well; but as they set off again to find more food, Gau tries to recall how he ended up here. He has forgotten what Materia has told him, but the rest of the group concludes that he is here to help; thus, they take him in.

Allusions[]

  • Gau forgetting what Materia told him parallels the sequence in Final Fantasy VI in which he could not remember the location of the Shiny Thing scuba helmet.
  • Gau's recruitment in his Lost Chapter reflects how he is recruited in FFVI: by handing him Dried Meat at the end of a fight.
  • During the cutscene "Kind One", from Act 3 Ch.2 Pt.1, Gau stands by a seemingly unconscious Sabin, a reference to how they first met, with Sabin (and Cyan) found unconscious by the shore after jumping off Baren Falls; there is no water in the Solitary Island, however, and it turns out later that Sabin was merely sleeping.
  • Gau is Gabranth's partner during the latter's Force Mode. The animation has Gau mimicking Gabranth's abilities, similar to how Gau can mimic an enemy's abilities using his Rage command in FFVI.
